What is the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR)?
The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is a global movement, and Chicago proudly hosts its own vibrant edition. This clothing-optional, people-powered event serves multiple powerful purposes. Firstly, it’s a celebration of bicycle power, emphasizing cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport. Secondly, it’s a bold statement about body image, promoting self-acceptance and the beauty of diverse human forms. Finally, it poignantly highlights the vulnerability of cyclists on roads dominated by pollution-based vehicles, advocating for safer and more bike-friendly urban environments. But beyond these important messages, the Chicago Naked Bike Ride is undeniably a fun and liberating experience.
Participants embrace the “bare-as-you-dare” philosophy, with attire ranging from body paint and creative costumes to simply underwear – or even nothing at all. While full frontal nudity carries legal considerations, many participants choose to go all out in the spirit of freedom and self-expression. Large-scale body painting is often available before the ride, adding to the festive and artistic atmosphere. Past Chicago events have been a resounding success, drawing over 2000 riders and covering over ten miles through prominent city areas. Blessed with Chicago’s pleasant summer weather and its enthusiastic cycling culture, the event has evolved into a remarkable moving celebration, often culminating in a fantastic after-party. Participants frequently describe it as a transformative group experience, exceeding expectations and fostering a sense of personal liberation.

What to bring: Helmets are highly recommended for safety. Lights are essential for visibility as the ride extends into the evening. Bring water to stay hydrated, snacks for energy, appropriate footwear, and any clothes you might want for before or after the ride.
Ride Safety and Guidelines
Safety in numbers: The Chicago Naked Bike Ride prioritizes safety through collective action. Ride as a large group, staying behind the leader and with the main body of participants. Maintain a central position in the lane to avoid bystanders. Be prepared to dismount your bike if needed to maintain control, especially in crowded areas.
Listen to and cooperate with Bike Marshalls: Identifiable by their yellow vests, Bike Marshalls are present to ensure everyone’s safety and smooth operation of the event. Communicate your needs to those around you and offer assistance to anyone who calls for help.
Important DON’Ts for a positive experience:
- DON’T get wasted: Maintain awareness and control for your safety and the safety of others.
- DON’T lag behind or split off: Stick with the group to ensure safety and event cohesion.
- DON’T enter lanes of oncoming traffic: Strictly adhere to the designated route and traffic rules.
- DON’T swarm cars or antagonize the public and cops: The aim is to raise awareness and celebrate cycling positively, not to create conflict.
Be responsible and respectful: Be prepared, stay alert, take care of yourself and others, and most importantly, LEAVE NO TRACE!!! PICK IT UP and PACK IT OUT!!! Let’s keep Chicago beautiful and demonstrate our respect for the city.
Most importantly, come ready to HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE !!!
