It is unsafe to pull a baby in a bike trailer until they reach 1 year of age. However, if using the trailer as a stroller with a newborn, you can stroll with babies as young as 6 weeks old when using appropriate infant support.
For stroller use with young infants, a baby insert is essential to properly support the baby’s head and neck. These inserts are typically used until the baby is at least 6 months old, or even longer depending on their development.
From personal experience, the baby insert for my Thule Chariot Cross was an invaluable baby accessory. It allowed me to resume an active lifestyle just 6 weeks postpartum. Burley’s Baby Insert is a similar option, but it prevents folding the trailer when installed. The Burley Baby Snuggler allows folding but is less supportive and recommended for babies 3 months and older.
Not all trailers offer baby insert upgrades. Thule, Burley, and Hamax trailer/strollers are your best choices if you plan to use your trailer as a stroller with a very young baby.

10. Storage – How Much Cargo Space Do You Need?
Storage needs are subjective and depend on personal preference. However, having more storage than initially anticipated is often beneficial! We’ve found ourselves carrying scooters, balance bikes, helmets, basketballs, lunches, and layers of clothing.
Trailer shape greatly influences storage capacity. Burley’s spacious, flat-bottomed storage area is larger than most and is ideal for items like scooters after school drop-offs. Burley X-model trailers allow seats to fold down, converting the entire trailer into a bike wagon or cargo trailer when not carrying children.
The Thule Chariot Lite and Cross have smaller storage areas but are less bulky overall.
Handlebar consoles offer convenient storage for water bottles, keys, and phones in stroller or jogger mode. Both Burley and Thule offer handlebar consoles as upgrades. Thule’s console attaches to the frame and remains stationary when handlebars are adjusted or flipped. Burley’s console stretches between handlebars and moves with handlebar adjustments.
11. Stroller Wheel Attachments – Choosing the Right Type
Trailers offer versatility beyond biking, with strolling being a popular use. Stroller wheel types vary significantly. If stroller functionality is important, choose a trailer that converts to your preferred stroller type.
(1) Tow Arm Swivel Wheel: Basic Stroller Conversion
A small, plastic swivel wheel attaches to the trailer arm end. It flips up for biking and down for strolling. In stroller mode, the trailer arm extends about 1.5 feet past the cab, which can be less ideal in crowded areas. Examples include the InStep Sierra Double and Burley Honey Bee.
Quality varies; basic on budget trailers like InStep or Schwinn, but smoother on higher-end trailers. This wheel style is standard on all Burley stroller-convertible trailers.
(2) Attached Single Swivel Wheel: Compact and Smooth
Similar to the tow arm swivel stroller, but attached to the trailer body, not the arm. Pushes smoothly but less maneuverable than four wheels on uneven surfaces.
(3) Dual Swivel Bike Stroller Wheels: Maximum Maneuverability
The most functional and user-friendly stroller type. Two small, plastic wheels attach under the front of the trailer body, tucked in for easy steering and maneuverability. Thule Chariot models standardly offer this four-wheeled stroller configuration, and Burley multi-sport trailers offer it as an upgrade.
(4) Jogging Kit: For Running and Exercise
Jogging wheels are designed for straight tracking while running, so the front wheel does not swivel. A true jogging wheel is at least 10″ in diameter and pneumatic (air-filled) for smooth rolling.
To turn a jogging trailer, you must tilt the handlebar to lift the front wheel and pivot the trailer. All multi-sport trailers offer jogging wheel upgrades. Examples include the Thule Chariot Cross and Burley Encore X.
12. Bike Trailer Stroller Brakes – Parking and Hand Brakes
All trailers sold with stroller options must include a parking brake. Brake types range from simple straps to handlebar-mounted hand brakes. While less critical for trailer use, well-designed parking or hand brakes are crucial for stroller and jogger modes.
Foot Brake: Standard Parking Brake
Similar to typical stroller brakes, foot brakes engage with your foot and lock rear tires. They are parking brakes, not designed to slow down the trailer. Foot brakes are found across price ranges and vary in ease of use, from foot-push to foot-slide mechanisms.
Hand Brake: Enhanced Control on Hills
Designed to slow the trailer, not stop it completely. Hand brakes are invaluable for joggers and parents navigating hills in stroller mode. The most versatile hand brake is an upgrade for Thule Chariot Lite and Cross models, usable in both stroller and jogging modes. The Hamax Outback jogging upgrade is unique in including a hand brake, but it activates the front jogging wheel and is not usable in stroller mode.
13. Adjustable Handlebars – Comfort for Parents of Different Heights
Adjustable stroller handlebars greatly enhance stroller and jogger usability. Most trailers offer at least two height settings, achieved by flipping the handlebar.
The best bike trailers, including all Burley strollers, Thule Chariot Cross and Lite, and Hamax Outback, feature swivel handlebars with multiple height adjustments. Swivel handlebars are ideal for families with significant height differences. Multiple-height handlebars adjust quickly, while dual-height handlebars take longer and offer less precise adjustment.
14. Folding Frame – Portability and Storage
Ease of folding is crucial for trailer usability and transport. A cumbersome folding process may deter you from using the trailer. Folded dimensions also determine vehicle compatibility.
For example, our Thule Cross Single requires folding down our Honda Pilot’s back seat for transport, limiting passenger capacity.
However, most kids bike trailers fold to some degree for easier transport and storage.
15. Hitch – Ensuring a Smooth and Secure Ride
Trailer hitch design affects ride smoothness for both parent and child. Most trailer companies (InStep, Schwinn, Allen Sports) use a standard hitch.
High-end brands (Thule, Burley) utilize unique, more precise designs, resulting in less “give” and pull-back during rides. All hitches sold in the US are designed to flex, allowing the bike to lay down while the trailer remains upright for easy loading and unloading.
