Bike Trailers and E-bikes: A Practical Guide for Families

As e-bikes gain popularity as family-friendly transportation, many are exploring the possibility of using them with Bike Trailers. We’re sharing our firsthand experience of using bike trailers with different e-bike models to help you understand what to expect and whether this setup is right for your family’s needs.

We recently tested the Thule Cadence bike trailer with two distinct e-bikes: the Gazelle Medeo T9 Classic and the RadRunner 1. Each bike offered a unique experience when paired with the trailer, highlighting different aspects of e-bike and bike trailer compatibility.

The Gazelle Medeo T9 Classic, equipped with a Bosch mid-drive motor, immediately impressed us with its seamless integration. Thanks to its quick-release rear wheel, attaching the bike trailer was as simple as it is on a traditional bicycle. The Gazelle’s motor delivered ample power for most situations, though we noticed that tackling steeper hills with a child in tow required some physical effort, even in the highest pedal assist mode. However, the overall experience remained very manageable and enjoyable.

Our second test involved the RadRunner 1, a more budget-conscious e-bike option. Initially, we had some concerns about attaching the Thule Ezhitch to this model. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the RadRunner’s frame, designed with pre-drilled holes for accessories, provided an unexpected solution. By utilizing a machine screw, lock washer, and nut, we were able to securely mount the Ezhitch to one of these existing holes. This workaround proved to be robust and didn’t interfere with the RadRunner’s passenger seat kit. While the trailer ended up being slightly offset due to the frame’s width, the RadRunner’s powerful motor provided significant torque. Even with the added weight of the bike trailer and passenger, the highest pedal assist level felt incredibly powerful, making acceleration and hill climbs feel almost effortless.

In conclusion, both the Gazelle Medeo T9 Classic and the RadRunner 1 successfully accommodated the bike trailer, albeit with different characteristics. The Gazelle offered a refined and straightforward experience, while the RadRunner demonstrated impressive power and adaptability with a bit of creative problem-solving for attachment. Our tests confirm that bike trailers can be a fantastic addition to the e-bike experience, providing families with a practical and fun way to cycle together.
