The Genesis of the Mod Zero: From Redesign to Reinvention

The Mod Zero was born from necessity and a desire for improvement. Faced with increasing minimum order quantities for frame sizes, the decision was made to consolidate the MCD and Road+ models. These frames, while popular, shared similar geometries, often leading to the question: “Which frame is right for me?” This challenge sparked an opportunity to return to the drawing board – to go back to zero and create a single frame that captures the best aspects of both predecessors while incorporating desired enhancements.

Inspiration for the name “Mod Zero” struck during everyday bike commutes, observing discarded Modelo beer cans. “Modelo,” shortened to “Model-O,” and then further refined to “Mod Zero,” perfectly encapsulated the idea of a fresh start and a foundational approach to bike design. The Mod Zero represents a return to core principles, resulting in a frame that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

Key Features of the Mod Zero: Built for Modern Cycling

The Mod Zero frame retains the acclaimed geometry of the MCD as its foundation, known for its balanced handling and compatibility with both 650b and 700c wheels. However, it introduces several key upgrades tailored to modern cycling demands:

  • Flat Mount Brakes: Embracing industry trends, the Mod Zero features flat mount brakes. While slightly more intricate to adjust, their sleek, compact design and the availability of high-quality forged dropouts with integrated mounts make them an aesthetically and functionally superior choice.
  • 44mm Oversized Head Tube: Addressing the growing demand for carbon forks, the 44mm head tube is designed to be compatible with tapered carbon forks like the Whisky No. 9 MCX. This allows riders to lighten their setup and enhances front-end stiffness thanks to the larger diameter and gusseted top and down tube junctions.

  • Generous Tire Clearance: Responding to rider requests for wider tires, the Mod Zero offers true clearance for 27.5 x 2.25 tires, even with standard road cranks and 50/34 chainrings. This “proper clearance” ensures optimal performance and prevents the compromises of forcing larger tires into frames not designed for them. For 700c wheels, the frame comfortably accommodates tires up to 50mm. For those needing even more tire clearance, the La Cabra model remains the choice for 29 x 2.2 or larger tires.

Enhanced Details and Versatility

Beyond these core features, the Mod Zero incorporates thoughtful details to enhance its versatility:

  • Dynamo Wire Routing: The fork includes braze-ons for clean and integrated dynamo wire routing, catering to riders who prioritize reliable lighting systems for long-distance adventures.

  • Full Housing Cable Routing: All cable housing runs along the downtube are full length, providing improved protection from the elements and ensuring consistent shifting and braking performance.
  • Front Derailleur Compatibility: The frame accommodates front derailleurs with a bolt-on cable stop or integrated cable stops found on Shimano 11-speed front derailleurs.
  • Replaceable Rear Derailleur Hanger: The Mod Zero features a replaceable rear derailleur hanger, a practical addition for easy maintenance and repair.
