Yamaha Tenere 700: Unveiling Why It’s a Top-Tier Adventure Motorcycle

As a content creator for usabikers.net and a devoted adventure rider with a soft spot for Yamaha, I’ve journeyed through countless terrains and motorcycle experiences. Recently, I traded in my trusted XT660ZA for the latest Yamaha Tenere 700. From my first ride, it was clear – the T7 isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a revelation. In my expert opinion, it stands as one of the premier adventure bikes available today. Eager to understand why? Let me break down the key elements that make the Tenere 700 exceptional.

The Essence of an Adventure Motorcycle: Versatility Redefined

For me, an ideal adventure motorcycle embodies versatility. It needs to be a steadfast companion for extended expeditions, laden with luggage, and equally exhilarating for spontaneous weekend off-road escapades. This balance is paramount for riders seeking true adventure.

From XT660ZA to Tenere 700: Why the Upgrade?

Having clocked 75,000km on my beloved Yamaha XT660ZA, and almost completing my dream customization project, I considered the next step. The final piece was a high-performance suspension upgrade, but the cost, surprisingly, approached that of a brand-new Tenere 700. This realization sparked a pivotal decision. Selling my well-traveled XT660ZA and embracing the new T7 seemed not just logical, but a leap towards superior performance and enhanced features.

In essence, the Tenere 700 surpasses its predecessor in nearly every aspect. I’m planning a detailed comparison post between the XT660ZA and the Tenere 700 soon, to fully illustrate these advancements.

While the market offers numerous compelling adventure motorcycles, and perhaps even superior models in certain aspects, the question remains: what defines “better”? Let’s delve into my criteria for selecting the ultimate adventure bike, and why the Yamaha Tenere 700 consistently rises to the top.

Price Point: Exceptional Value in the Adventure Segment

The Yamaha Tenere 700 immediately impresses with its competitive price point. While not the absolute cheapest adventure motorcycle available, it undeniably offers remarkable value within its class, making it accessible to a broader range of riders seeking high performance without an exorbitant cost.

In fact, some adventure bikes command prices double that of the T7. Does this price escalation equate to double the quality or performance? Not necessarily. Often, the increased cost reflects sophisticated electronic systems like Traction Control (TC) and Power Maps. In my view, and echoed by fellow riders, these complex systems can introduce more potential issues than solutions.

The T7’s accessible price allows for personalized upgrades. While some might view the stock spring and suspension as standard, they are perfectly adequate for many riders. For those seeking extreme off-road capabilities, investing in stiffer springs and advanced suspension components is a viable option. Even with significant modifications, the Tenere 700 often remains more cost-effective than many stock, higher-priced models from competing brands, while offering superior aftermarket component quality.

Electronics: Embracing Simplicity for Reliability

A standout feature of the Tenere 700 is its refreshingly simple electronic system. In contrast to adventure motorcycles laden with complex electronics, the T7 prioritizes a direct and dependable riding experience. This is a major advantage for riders who favor straightforward mechanics and ease of maintenance over electronic complexities.

As a rider who prefers to focus on the road, not system configurations, the T7’s approach is ideal. Adventure riding inherently involves diverse terrains, and the most effective way to control a bike is through understanding its raw mechanics, not navigating electronic menus.

Furthermore, electronic complexity increases the potential for breakdowns. The more intricate a system, the higher the chance of failure and the costlier the repairs. Finding qualified technicians for advanced systems can also be challenging, especially in remote locations. This can lead to escalating repair expenses – nicht gut (not good).

For me, less is more, and simplicity is superior. The Yamaha Tenere 700’s straightforward design enhances reliability and facilitates easier repairs, potentially anywhere globally. Fewer components mean fewer potential points of failure, making reliability the cornerstone of its design philosophy.

Popularity: Strength in Numbers for Adventure Riders

While some may seek exclusivity through niche, high-priced bikes, I find significant value in the Yamaha Tenere 700’s widespread popularity. This isn’t about being “unique”; it’s about practical advantages for adventure riders.

The T7’s popularity translates to lower costs for parts, maintenance, and servicing. Renowned for its reliability and durability, the Tenere 700 benefits from readily available and affordable components. Maintaining your motorcycle becomes less financially burdensome, a crucial factor for long-term adventure riding.

Moreover, a popular model fosters a thriving aftermarket ecosystem. The demand for Tenere 700 accessories drives competition among manufacturers, resulting in a wider selection of better, more affordable aftermarket solutions.

On-Road Riding Dynamics: Surprisingly Agile on Asphalt

My extensive on-road experience with the Yamaha Tenere 700 confirms its exceptional asphalt performance. The 689cc parallel-twin engine delivers consistent and smooth power, perfectly suited for both highway cruising and navigating city streets. Even with knobby Mitas E-10 tires, I thoroughly enjoyed tackling twisty Italian roads. The Tenere 700’s geometry lends itself surprisingly well to cornering.

A standout aspect of the T7’s on-road behavior is its handling prowess. The long-travel suspension and wide handlebar provide a planted, confident feel on paved surfaces. While some riders opt to replace the handlebar, I find the stock setup ideal for my riding style. My only immediate adjustment was handlebar risers, enhancing comfort during stand-up riding on dirt roads. The Tenere 700’s low seat height and slim profile further contribute to its maneuverability in confined spaces.

Regarding comfort, the Tenere 700 excels for solo riders. The passenger seat is firm and narrow, potentially less comfortable for long journeys with a pillion. Initially, I considered replacing the seat, but after extensive trips to Turkey and Italy, I adapted to it. The transition from the plush seat of my XT660ZA was simply a temporary adjustment.

The suspension is finely tuned for on-road use, delivering a smooth, controlled ride across varied road conditions.

I also appreciate the brakes’ progressive nature. Unlike some bikes with overly aggressive brakes, the T7 offers nuanced braking control, particularly beneficial when modulating brake pressure in corners.

Overall, the Yamaha Tenere 700 is a superb choice for riders prioritizing a dependable and comfortable on-road motorcycle. Its responsive engine, stable handling, and comfortable riding posture make it a versatile all-rounder on asphalt.

Off-Road Performance: Dominating the Dirt

When the pavement ends and the terrain turns rugged, the Tenere 700 truly shines. Dirt roads, off-road trails, and all-terrain environments are where the T7 excels.

The motorcycle is engineered with features specifically for challenging landscapes, including long-travel suspension, a high-clearance frame, and optimized drive geometry.

The engine’s broad torque curve ensures ample power is always accessible, while its smooth and refined delivery enables comfortable, all-day riding in demanding conditions.

While not a professional off-road rider, I find the T7 inspires greater confidence on dirt roads than any other bike I’ve tested. The transition from the XT660ZA to the Tenere 700 marked a significant leap in my off-road riding capabilities. I ride with increased assurance, tackling more challenging terrains than ever before.

Tackling Compression Squat: Yamaha’s Ingenious Solution

A common issue in adventure motorcycles during off-road riding is “compression squat.” This occurs when the suspension excessively compresses under load, leading to instability.

Yamaha effectively addressed this in the Tenere 700 through design innovations aimed at minimizing compression squat and enhancing stability.

One key feature is the link-type rear suspension, which isolates spring and damper functions, improving responsiveness to uneven terrain and maintaining bike stability.

Further enhancements include frame and geometry modifications, featuring a longer swingarm and a more relaxed head angle. These changes optimize load distribution and reduce weight transfer to the front wheel.

A particularly notable geometric refinement is the high countershaft placement relative to the rear sprocket, sharpening the swingarm angle. This creates an anti-squat effect, effectively pushing the front wheel down under throttle, enhancing traction.

Yamaha Tenere 700 RidingYamaha Tenere 700 Riding

In simple terms, Yamaha engineered a heavier bike to handle like a dirt bike. Upon acceleration, the rear suspension tends to extend rather than compress, forcing the front wheel towards the ground. This results in superior traction on dirt, particularly valuable for uphill climbs and cornering on loose surfaces.

Tenere 700: Addressing the Downsides

No motorcycle is without its imperfections, and the T7 is no exception. My primary concern before purchasing the Tenere 700 was the stock exhaust design. I’ve witnessed firsthand how the exhaust holder can bend inwards, obstructing the rear wheel. The only immediate fix is often bending the component back, but this critical part is integrated with the frame. Damage here could mean frame damage. Even minor bends, if unnoticed, can cause the exhaust to wear down the swingarm, potentially leading to costly repairs.

Fortunately, upgrading to an HP Corse high exhaust is a straightforward and reasonably priced solution. This was, in fact, one of the first modifications I planned for my new T7.

Design and Aesthetics: A Matter of Personal Taste

Design preferences are subjective, but for me, the Tenere 700’s sharp, aggressive styling is a major draw. I’m not drawn to rounded, retro designs, with the Ducati DesertX being a notable exception in the adventure bike category. Both the T7 and DesertX stand out aesthetically in the adventure segment.

Numerous sticker kits are available for the Tenere 700, allowing for extensive customization to reflect individual style. I even designed my own kit and plan to share the template soon, following the example of my XT660Z sticker template.

As is often the case, the stock exhaust is visually underwhelming. However, as mentioned, a high exhaust transformation dramatically enhances the T7’s appearance, complemented by well-integrated accessories like the rear rack.
