Choosing the Best Motor for Your Pedicab Bike

I’m on the hunt for a front motorized hub for my Pedicab Bike. When I’m riding solo, the pedicab and I weigh around 350 pounds. However, when I’m carrying 2-3 passengers, the total weight can jump to 650-800 pounds, and that’s when I really need motor assistance. The canopy on my pedicab also creates a lot of wind resistance, almost like having another passenger onboard. Most of the time when the pedicab is empty, I plan to freewheel, so motor drag is a concern, although with the pedicab’s weight, it might not be too noticeable. Honestly, I’m new to using motors on pedicabs.

My work is a mix of street pickups and tours. This means I’m usually moving at speeds under 5mph. I plan to freewheel on flat roads and downhills, only using the motor on hills, which make up about 30% of my routes. Occasionally, for street work, I might need to go around 10mph. Considering the weight and how I use my pedicab, I need power more than high speed.

I’ve looked into a few motors based on what other drivers are using. The Heinsman 24 volt system is one. Drivers say it’s great for hills but a bit slow on flat ground. I’ve also heard about overheating problems, and the price is a factor.

Then there’s the Crystalite/Phoenix Brute. It’s popular, but I’m trying to stay within federal guidelines, and I think the 1440 Watt motor is over the limit. Though, with the heavy loads I carry, I doubt it would ever hit 20mph. I’ve even thought about a speed governor – if that would make it legal for insurance.

I’m also considering two 750 watt Chinese motors. One is from Golden Motors, sold by a pedicab manufacturer who says they’ve tested it for a year and it’s reliable. I don’t know anyone personally who’s used this motor on a pedicab. This dealer claims the Golden motor is better than the Heinsman, better on hills and faster on flats, plus cheaper. The other motor (500-750w) is from E-BikeKit™. I’m not sure who makes it. http://www.e-bikekit.com/shop/index.php?p=product&id=109&parent=4 I tested this motor on a friend’s pedicab for an hour, and it seemed okay, maybe a little underpowered, but acceptable.

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share about these motors for my pedicab use. I’m also open to other motor suggestions.

Thanks,
Richard
