Quick Bike Maintenance Checks You Can Do Yourself
Regular bike maintenance is crucial for safety and performance. Before each ride, take a few minutes to perform these essential checks:
- AIR: Properly inflated tires are key to a smooth and efficient ride. If your tires feel soft when you press them with your thumb, they need more air.
- BRAKES: Your brakes are your most important safety feature. When you squeeze your brake levers firmly, you should still have space to fit your thumb between the lever and the handlebar. Regularly inspect your brake pads for wear and tear and replace them when necessary.
- CHAIN, CRANK, CASSETTE: A clean and lubricated drivetrain ensures smooth gear changes and extends the life of your components. Spin your chain backwards a few times to check for smooth running. Apply light oil if needed and remove any rust or buildup.
- QUICK RELEASE: If your bike is equipped with quick-release wheels, double-check that the levers are securely closed before each ride to prevent accidents.
- CHECK: As you begin riding, pay attention to any unusual noises like rubbing, grinding, or clicking. These sounds can indicate a problem that needs attention.

Tips to Drive Less and Embrace Cycling
Choosing to cycle more and drive less benefits both your health and the environment. Here are some tips to reduce your reliance on cars:
- Slow Down a Bit: Driving at high speeds increases fuel consumption and emissions. Reducing your speed, especially above 60MPH, can save fuel and reduce wear on your vehicle.
- Perform Proper Maintenance: Regular vehicle maintenance, like oil changes, improves engine efficiency and reduces emissions.
- Break the Myths Around Driving: Idling in traffic wastes fuel. Turn off your engine if you’re stopped for more than a minute, weather permitting.
- Get a Windshield Upgrade: Window tints can help regulate car temperature, reducing the need for air conditioning and lowering emissions.
- Learn How to Drive Efficiently: Smooth driving habits, like gradual stops and starts, save fuel. Consider a safe driving course to improve your technique.
- Rethink Modifications: Avoid unnecessary vehicle modifications like lift kits that make your engine work harder and increase emissions.
- Explore Alternative Options: Consider alternative fuel vehicles for your next car purchase. Explore telecommuting and telemedicine to reduce your daily driving needs.
- Ship It in Bulk: Consolidate online orders to reduce delivery trips.
- Hit the Open Road Less Often: Reduce unnecessary travel and prioritize cycling for local trips.
