Adidas VeloStan Smith: Iconic Style Meets City Cycling Performance

Adidas has reimagined its legendary Stan Smith sneaker for urban cyclists with the new VeloStan Smith. This innovative shoe blends the classic Stan Smith design with cycling-specific features, making it an ideal choice for city commutes and cycling adventures. Joining the VeloSamba in Adidas’ city cycling collection, the VeloStan Smith provides a stylish and functional footwear option for those who explore their city by bike and beyond.

The original Stan Smith, born from a collaboration between Adidas and American tennis icon Stan Smith in 1978, has transcended its sporting origins to become a fashion and cultural icon. Now, the VeloStan Smith extends this legacy to urban cycling, offering commuters a shoe that’s as stylish off the bike as it is functional on it.

The key adaptation for cycling is the integration of a two-bolt SPD cleat system, compatible with clipless pedals. This discreet system is seamlessly embedded into the midsole, allowing cyclists to efficiently clip into their pedals for riding and walk comfortably off the bike without changing shoes. This versatility is crucial for navigating urban environments where cyclists frequently transition between riding and walking.

Complementing the cleat system is a rigid nylon plate strategically placed within the synthetic sole. This plate covers the front two-thirds of the sole, providing stiffness for efficient power transfer during pedaling. However, the design retains flexibility in the heel and forefoot, ensuring comfort and natural movement when walking. This thoughtful construction balances cycling performance with everyday wearability, making the VeloStan Smith a truly versatile Adidas Shoes Bike option.

The VeloStan Smith maintains the signature aesthetic of the original, featuring a soft, full-grain leather upper for durability and all-weather performance. Iconic Stan Smith design cues like the green foam heel and perforated three stripes are also present, ensuring instant recognition. A unique touch for this cycling edition is a golden embossed portrait of Stan Smith with his racing bike on the tongue, highlighting the shoe’s special purpose.

Kerryn Foster, Head of Specialist Sports at Adidas, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the shoe: “It’s been very special to collaborate with Stan on this project alongside our Originals team. For over five decades, the Stan Smith has reimagined what a sport shoe can be… We know that cyclists need flexibility when in urban environments, so this latest cycling-specific iteration was designed with this front of mind – a unique shoe crafted to help riders discover their local landscape in stand-out style.”

Stan Smith himself expressed his enthusiasm for the cycling adaptation: “The Stan Smith sneaker journey started in 1978, and it has been a joy to watch adidas evolve and reimagine it ever since… As someone who loves the adventure cycling offers – it’s exciting to see how these small but mighty additions can continue the silhouette’s sporting legacy. By bringing Stan Smith to cycling, I hope it encourages more people to discover new communities and find freedom through the bicycle.”

The VeloStan Smith joins the Velosamba as part of the Adidas Cycling range, extending the brand’s commitment to innovative cycling shoes. Available in the classic white and green colorway, the VeloStan Smith is available for €140 at select retail stores and online at adidas.com/cycling. This new adidas bike shoe offers city cyclists a stylish and functional way to ride, seamlessly blending iconic design with performance features.
