Stark Varg EX: Unleashing the Street Legal Electric Dirt Bike Revolution

The Stark Varg has already stunned the dirt bike world with its groundbreaking performance, and now, it’s breaking barriers again. Meet the Stark Varg EX, the Street Legal Electric Dirt Bike poised to redefine riding. This isn’t just an electric motorcycle; it’s a fully homologated, road-ready version of the machine that set out to prove electric superiority over gasoline, and succeeded in winning championships.

Initially unveiled in 2021, the Stark Varg impressed with specifications that challenged traditional motocross bikes. Boasting comparable weight to a 450cc MXGP bike but with significantly more power and an astounding 764 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheel, it was clear Stark Future was aiming high. The battery promised range equivalent to a full tank of gas on a 450, offering up to six hours of trail riding. The Varg’s racing success, including winning the UK Arenacross championship in 2023-4, solidified its performance credentials.

Now, the Stark Varg EX takes this innovation to the streets. Fully street-legal in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, this electric dirt bike expands riding possibilities beyond the track and trail.

The transition to street legal hasn’t compromised the Varg’s core performance. The EX model incorporates necessary road-going components like a 4,000-lumen headlight, license plate, horn, and integrated flexible indicators. Interestingly, the battery capacity has been increased to 7.2 kWh, a 20% boost over the motocross version, suggesting enhanced range for street and dual-sport use.

Crucially, the Stark Varg EX retains its impressive 80 horsepower (60 kW) peak output. Multiple riding modes allow riders to tailor the power delivery, making it adaptable for various conditions and skill levels. Stark has also enhanced the electronics, enabling riders to customize power curves and adjust regenerative braking, further personalizing the riding experience of this electric dirt bike.

Perhaps surprisingly, despite its power exceeding that of many 450cc enduro bikes, the Stark Varg EX benefits from progressive electric vehicle regulations in certain regions. Anton Wass, Stark Future CEO, highlights this, stating, “even with 80 horsepower, the Varg EX can be ridden with an A1 license in Europe due to their way of measuring the low continuous power. And in many countries in Southern Europe, such as France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, it’s even legal to ride the bike with a car license.” This opens up access to high-performance electric dirt biking to a wider range of riders.

However, Stark Future emphasizes the Varg EX’s dual-sport nature. It’s designed to connect off-road trails via paved roads, rather than for extensive highway touring or commuting. Its strengths remain firmly rooted in off-road performance, with tire options ranging from extreme enduro to rallycross specifications.

The Varg EX also features a removable, “military-grade” Android phone functioning as the dash, equipped with cameras, GPS, and pre-loaded with off-road navigation. This integrated technology underscores the bike’s modern and off-road focused design.

Priced from US$12,900 plus shipping and taxes, the Stark Varg EX represents a significant investment. Yet, Stark argues that its drastically reduced maintenance compared to traditional combustion engine bikes makes it “actually the most affordable enduro bike you could own” over time, despite the higher initial cost. Production is underway but limited, and orders are currently being accepted.

The Stark Varg EX is undoubtedly a game-changer. Stark Future’s commitment to innovation, including plans to pioneer 3D metal printing for mass production, signals an exciting future for the brand and the electric dirt bike industry. This street legal electric dirt bike is not just a product; it’s a statement of intent, pushing the boundaries of performance and accessibility in the world of off-road motorcycling.
