Gearin’ Up Bikes stands as a cornerstone of the Washington, DC community, operating as both a bike shop and an educational hub for bicycle repair. Since its inception in 2012, this organization has been dedicated to empowering youth from underserved areas of DC through comprehensive bicycle mechanic training. By providing career development opportunities and ensuring access to affordable, quality used bicycles, Gearin’ Up Bikes makes a tangible difference in the lives of many. In 2023, Gearin’ Up Bikes strengthened its impact by joining forces with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA).

Earn-A-Bike Program: Build Skills and Own Your Ride
We are excited to announce the launch of our Earn-A-Bike program at our newly established space! This enriching 6-week program is designed for high school students and takes place every Wednesday and Friday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Participants in this hands-on after-school initiative will delve into the essentials of bike maintenance and repair. From mastering flat tire fixes to fine-tuning shifting systems, the program covers a range of crucial skills. Throughout the program, students gain practical experience and build confidence by working directly on bicycles. As a rewarding culmination of their dedication and effort, participants will earn their very own bike, complete with lights, a lock, and a helmet, to keep after completing the session. This program offers a unique opportunity for young individuals to not only acquire valuable skills at our bike shop in Washington DC but also to gain personal ownership and pride.
This program is exclusively for high school students, and class sizes are limited to 10 participants per session. Due to the program’s popularity, we encourage interested students to sign up promptly to secure a spot. A waitlist will be maintained in order of sign-ups, and for those who cannot join this initial session, we plan to offer additional sessions in the summer and two more in the fall.
