Discover the Campus with a Blue Bike

Register, Check Out & Ride

Want an easy and eco-friendly way to navigate the Washington and Lee University campus and the town of Lexington? The Blue Bike program offers students, faculty, and staff the perfect solution! We operate a lottery system at the beginning of the fall term to distribute bikes. Registration opens one week before fall classes begin. Lucky winners are randomly selected and notified by email within the first week of classes. After the lottery period, blue bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis directly from the Outing Club during our regular hours.

Ready to ride? Here’s how to get your blue bike:

  • STEP 1: Complete the online registration form.
  • STEP 2: Keep an eye on your inbox! We’ll email lottery winners during the first week of fall classes.
  • STEP 3: If you’re a lottery winner, or after the lottery period, visit the Outing Club Bike Shop during our open hours. We’ll help you finish the paperwork and get you set up with your blue bike.

We announce special extended hours at the start of each term to make bike pick-up easy. Our regular bike shop hours are always available online.

About the Blue Bike Program

The Washington and Lee Blue Bike program promotes a healthier and more sustainable campus community. By choosing a bicycle, you’re contributing to cleaner air, improved personal health, reduced traffic congestion, increased parking availability, lower oil consumption, and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

The program is open to all students, faculty, and staff at W&L. Once registered, you can check out a blue bike, along with a lock and helmet, completely free of charge for the duration of the term. Participants are responsible for securely locking their blue bike whenever it’s not in use. Please remember that if a bike is lost or not returned, the borrower is responsible for covering its full replacement cost.

Encounter a problem with your blue bike? Spot a blue bike that looks lost or abandoned? Please let us know by sending an email to [email protected].
