Good Bikes for Women: Finding Your Perfect Ride

Finding the best bike for women can feel like navigating a maze. The sheer variety in performance and price can quickly become overwhelming. Having personally put over 20 different women’s bikes to the test, we’ve compiled a list of our top picks, catering to various riding styles and budgets.

Whether you’re looking for a bike for leisurely neighborhood rides with family, stylish cruises along the boardwalk, or gentle explorations of dirt trails with friends, we’ve rigorously tested bikes to suit each scenario. From versatile women’s hybrid bikes to laid-back cruiser bikes and adventurous recreational mountain bikes, we’ve invested the time and miles to simplify your decision-making process. And yes, for those seeking an extra boost, we’ve also explored the world of women’s ebikes!

Our primary focus for this guide is to highlight high-quality bikes perfectly suited for casual to intermediate, non-technical women riders. We’ve delved deep into the realms of casual, cruiser, hybrid, commuter, and fitness bikes to identify models that deliver exceptional durability and performance relative to their price. In today’s market, bike availability is also a crucial consideration, so we’ve factored that into our recommendations as well.

It’s important to note that technical bikes – such as full-suspension mountain bikes and road bikes – are intentionally excluded from this list. These types of bikes are often overkill for the everyday woman rider seeking enjoyable and accessible cycling experiences.

What Style of Women’s Bike is Best for You?

The first step in finding the best women’s bike for your needs is narrowing down the type of riding you plan to do most often. While versatility is a feature of many bikes, choosing a bike style that primarily matches your most frequent riding style is generally the most effective approach.

Step-through vs. Regular Frame? Many women’s bikes are designed with a step-through frame, characterized by a sloping top tube. Step-through frames offer the advantage of easier mounting and dismounting, as they reduce the need to lift your leg as high. However, in terms of performance and function, step-through and regular frames are essentially the same.

For those planning to ride with a child-bike seat, step-through frames are often preferred due to the increased ease of getting on and off the bike when it’s weighted down with a child. It’s worth noting that step-through frames are typically compatible with rear rack-mounted child bike seats. Regular “triangle” frames, on the other hand, usually accommodate both rack and frame mounted rear bike seats. Both frame styles are equally compatible with front-mounted seats.

Exploring Women’s Bike Styles: Details and Experiences

NAVIGATE TO YOUR PREFERRED BIKE STYLE SECTION:

  1. Hybrid Bikes – Ideal for medium to longer distance paved riding
  2. Comfort and Cruiser Bikes – Best for shorter, leisurely rides on paved paths
  3. Recreational Mountain Bikes – Suitable for basic dirt trails and mixed terrain use
  4. E-Bikes – Diverse models available to match every riding style

Women’s Cruiser Bikes and Comfort Bikes

As their names suggest, women’s cruiser bikes and comfort bikes are designed for comfortable cruising, typically over shorter distances. These bikes prioritize rider comfort and ease of use, making them perfect for relaxed rides. Here are some key features you can typically expect from these types of bikes:

Key Features of Women’s Cruiser Bikes

  • HANDLEBARS: Comfort and cruiser bikes commonly feature swept-back handlebars. This handlebar style promotes an upright riding posture, allowing the rider to sit straight up.
  • BODY POSITION: Upright and relaxed, with a straight back. Many casual riders find this upright position more comfortable than leaning forward to reach the handlebars. It’s a matter of personal preference, but it’s undeniably comfortable for leisurely riding.
  • WHEELS AND TIRES: Tires typically have a smooth street tread, but their width can vary. Wider tires are a hallmark of the cruiser style, providing more cushioning and a plush ride compared to narrower tires.
  • SADDLE: Wide, cushioned saddles are designed to cradle your hips and minimize “saddle soreness,” a common discomfort with narrower, more performance-oriented bike saddles. These wide saddles often include springs for a touch of visual suspension, though their cushioning effect is primarily aesthetic.
  • BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: Many cruiser and comfort bikes are compatible with bike trailers and child bike seats. However, the upright riding position of the adult rider reduces pedaling efficiency and can lead to increased fatigue, particularly when hauling a child. For longer distances or hilly terrain when carrying children, we strongly recommend considering a hybrid bike instead.

About the Chatham Step-Through

If you’re seeking a budget-friendly beach cruiser, the Retrospec Chatham step-through models are an outstanding choice for a 26-inch women’s bike. Available in a vibrant spectrum of colors and configurations—single-speed, 3-speed, and 7-speed—there are options to match diverse needs and budgets.

Having tested numerous women’s bikes at significantly higher price points, we were pleasantly surprised by the comfort and ease of riding offered by the Retrospec Chatham women’s cruisers. Simply put, they deliver exceptional value for the money! We evaluated the Chatham single-speed model with a coaster brake and the Chatham Plus 7-speed version equipped with dual handbrakes.

Single-speed bikes excel on flat terrain and boast fewer components, which translates to reduced maintenance and a lower risk of breakdowns over time. Initial assembly is remarkably straightforward, even for those who aren’t particularly mechanically inclined.

Most single-speed beach cruisers utilize a coaster brake (back pedal brake). The advantage of coaster brakes lies in their minimal maintenance requirements. However, they demand more effort to engage and prevent backpedaling for balance adjustments. If simplicity and low maintenance are top priorities, and you seek a bike that requires minimal upkeep, the Retrospec Chatham single-speed is an excellent option.

The 7-speed Chatham Plus comes at a slightly higher price but is a more versatile choice if you anticipate riding in hilly areas or areas prone to windy conditions, such as near beaches. Tackling inclines or battling gusty ocean winds on a single-speed bike can be challenging! With gears and dual handbrakes, you gain enhanced control and adaptability for enjoyable riding experiences, coupled with reliable stopping power. However, it’s worth noting that the initial assembly of the 7-speed model is considerably more complex than the single-speed version. If you’re not a seasoned bike enthusiast, professional assembly at a bike shop is highly recommended.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • Unbeatable low price and minimal maintenance requirements.
  • Single-speed option simplifies casual riding and reduces long-term maintenance.
  • 7-speed models offer greater versatility for hilly terrain and feature more powerful hand brakes.
  • Dual v-brakes provide dependable stopping power, surpassing the brakes found on some significantly more expensive cruiser bikes with pivot-style brakes.
  • Wider tires offer enhanced cushioning compared to the thinner tires on other women’s cruiser bikes we tested.
  • A wide array of fun color options to personalize your ride.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • Most Retrospec Chatham models are available in standard or “Plus” versions. Plus models are slightly pricier but feature upgraded components. The key differences lie in the aluminum frames (versus steel in standard models), which are lighter and rust-resistant. Plus models also feature wider BigWave tires, enhancing ride cushioning. We found the difference in cushioning to be noticeable.
  • If you intend to use your beach cruiser near the actual beach, the aluminum frame (and certain components) of the Plus models are a superior choice to prevent rust. (However, some components may still be susceptible to rust.)
  • We advise against using bike trailers or child bike seats with bikes that only have coaster brakes (single-speed and 3-speed models). The increased stopping power needed when carrying children is a bit much for a single coaster brake to handle effectively.
  • Bikes equipped solely with coaster brakes and lacking handbrakes are more affordable but offer less speed control, as you must pedal backward to slow down.
  • Assembly of the 7-speed model is more intricate than that of more expensive bikes on this list and may necessitate assistance from a bike shop.

About the Priority Classic Plus

The Priority Classic Plus delivers exceptional quality in a remarkably low-maintenance package. If you’re in the market for a women’s cruiser or comfort bike with gears, the 3-speed setup of the Classic Plus provides ample range for casual riding and is simpler to manage than bikes with more complex gear systems.

You might have learned to ride on a bike with a coaster brake (back pedal brake) and believe that’s what you prefer now. However, all models of this bike come equipped with front and rear hand brakes and no coaster brake.

We highly recommend considering a bike without a coaster brake. Dual hand brakes (and the absence of a coaster brake) contribute to a more intuitive and enjoyable riding experience. They also offer enhanced stopping power, a particularly valuable feature if you plan to carry a child in a child bike seat.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • If you’re not deeply familiar with bike mechanics, bike maintenance can be a significant hassle. The Priority Classic Plus addresses this with its grease-free belt drive and internally geared hub, requiring minimal, if any, upkeep. Most bikes utilize a chain drive and derailleur, making them more prone to requiring bike shop visits.
  • The 3-speed system keeps shifting remarkably simple while still providing the versatility to tackle moderate hills or cruise along flat roads.
  • Assembly is streamlined and straightforward, even for those less experienced with bike mechanics.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The thinner “hybrid tires” offer smooth rolling on pavement but provide less cushioning than the wider tires found on some other bikes.
  • Available in both a women’s step-through frame and a men’s diamond frame. Choose based on your personal preference and height considerations.
  • Due to the internally geared rear hub, a special adapter is necessary for attaching bike trailers.
  • If you wish to use a rear child bike seat on the women’s cruiser model (step-through frame), you’ll need to purchase a rack and a rack-mounted child bike seat separately. The diamond frame is compatible with both rack and frame-mounted rear child bike seats.

About the Electra Townie 7D

The Electra Townie women’s bike reigns supreme in comfort cruising and is particularly well-suited for riders who may be a bit hesitant or timid on a bike. Unlike traditional bikes, the Townie’s design allows the rider to position the saddle lower to the ground, enabling them to place their feet flat on the ground when starting and stopping. This feature makes the Townie noticeably easier to manage, especially for riders who prioritize stability and control.

The secret behind the Townie’s comfort (and that of many bikes in Electra’s lineup) is Electra’s Flat-Foot Technology. Electra Flat-Foot Technology is not about electronics or apps; it’s all about the bike’s frame geometry. The design strategically positions the pedals further forward on the bike, rather than directly beneath the rider.

This innovative design allows for full leg extension with each pedal stroke by encouraging a more forward pedaling motion, rather than a purely downward push. As a result, the seat doesn’t need to be set as high, and the rider maintains the reassuring ability to place their entire foot flat on the ground when stopping and starting.

This setup is ideal for individuals who may not have the strongest balance or for those less confident riders who desire more ground contact when stopping and starting. However, it’s important to understand that because you’re pushing more forward on the pedals than straight down, you don’t transfer quite as much power to the pedals. This makes the Townie less ideal for tackling hills, long-distance rides, or carrying children in bike trailers or child bike seats.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • Flat-foot technology is the primary reason to choose this women’s cruiser bike. We were genuinely surprised by its exceptional comfort and how much we appreciated being able to start and stop with our feet flat on the ground!
  • 7 speeds provide significantly more versatility for climbing hills compared to most women’s cruiser bikes with just a single speed.
  • 2″ wide tires are wider than those on other bikes in this category, contributing to a feeling of enhanced stability and cushioning.
  • A wide range of fun color options to match your personal style.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The Townie features dual handbrakes and no coaster brake. Many women’s cruiser bikes have coaster brakes, but the Townie is an exception! Coaster brakes are lower maintenance, but they prevent backpedaling and require more force to stop the bike.
  • Offered in a single size, but in our testing, it comfortably accommodates a wide range of rider heights.
  • While you can attach a child bike seat or bike trailer, this setup is not the Townie’s forte. We strongly recommend considering hybrid bikes if you plan to frequently bring children along for rides.

About the Loft 7D

If you prefer an upright riding position but need a bike for longer distances or hauling children, the Electra Loft 7D women’s bike is our top recommendation. Equipped with 7 speeds, it offers significantly more versatility for adjusting to the added weight of a child or tackling inclines and flat stretches.

While the Loft 7D is categorized under Electra’s “flat-foot technology,” its impact on this model is subtle compared to the Townie – in fact, it’s barely noticeable. So, if having your feet flat on the ground is a primary concern, the Townie is the better choice. However, if an upright posture is your main goal, the Loft 7D’s pedal position is more akin to a standard bike, enabling you to generate more leverage on the pedals. This translates to more manageable long-distance rides or rides with children in tow.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The combination of efficient pedaling, an upright riding position, and 7 gears is a rare and highly desirable feature set.
  • The uniquely designed split top tube gives this women’s comfort bike a particularly stylish aesthetic.
  • A small detail, but the pedals are both functional and visually appealing!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The forward-placed pedals and large wheels mean that your toes might make contact with the tire during tight turns. We experienced this ourselves and consider it one of the few potential drawbacks of flat-foot technology when combined with larger wheels.
  • The leather grips are undeniably beautiful but can be somewhat slick and offer limited grip. If this is a concern for you, consider adding some grip tape for enhanced control.
  • Electra women’s bikes may not be universally compatible with all racks. The recommended rack for the Loft 7D is the Electra MIK Rear Rack.

We tested the single-speed, 26″ wheel “Around the Block” women’s cruiser. While we favor the overall superior quality of the Retrospec Chatham bikes, the SixThreeZero is a respectable option that we can confidently recommend, especially for budget-conscious riders.

Women’s Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid bikes represent a versatile blend of road bike and mountain bike characteristics. They combine the smooth-rolling, low-resistance tires of a road bike with the more upright riding position and flat handlebars of a mountain bike, truly offering the best of both worlds. Hybrid bikes are an excellent choice for women who primarily ride on smooth, paved surfaces.

If your riding is mainly on paved roads with occasional forays onto varied terrain, consider a hybrid bike equipped with a suspension fork (typically found on higher-end models). If all-terrain riding, including dirt or gravel trails, will constitute the majority of your cycling, a recreational mountain bike is likely a more suitable option (refer to the mountain bike section below).

Distinguishing Features of Hybrid Bikes:

  • HANDLEBARS: Hybrid bikes feature flat, mostly straight handlebars that can vary in height and width. Hybrid handlebars strike a comfortable balance, typically not as wide as mountain bike handlebars nor as narrow as road bike handlebars.
  • BODY POSITION: Hybrid bikes position riders in a semi-upright posture. The rider’s torso is more leaned-in compared to a comfort/cruiser bike but significantly more upright than on a road bike. This semi-upright position optimizes power transfer with each pedal stroke. As a result, hybrid bikes are generally more efficient for use with child bike seats or trailers compared to comfort or cruiser bikes.
  • WHEELS AND TIRES: Similar to road bikes, hybrid bike tires are thinner and inflated to higher air pressures to minimize rolling resistance on pavement. This makes hybrid bikes fast and efficient on paved surfaces, but they offer less cushioning than the wider tires of recreational mountain bikes.
  • SUSPENSION FORK: Given the minimal cushioning provided by hybrid tires, suspension forks help absorb bumps and vibrations, particularly beneficial if you’ll be riding on rough paved roads or gravel and dirt trails.
  • GEARS: Hybrid bikes offer a wide range of gear options, from 3 to 27 speeds. The number of gears you need depends largely on the elevation changes in your riding area. More steep uphills and downhills necessitate more gears. However, the average rider typically finds 3 to 10 gears to be sufficient.
  • BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: Among all bike styles in this guide, women’s hybrid bikes are generally the most practical choice if you plan to pull a bike trailer or use a child bike seat for city riding.

About the Priority Turi

We’ve been enthusiastic riders and advocates of Priority bikes (for both adults and kids!) for many years. The Priority Turi stands out as the most “high-end” model we’ve tested and quickly became our preferred bike for commuting to school with our kindergartener.

Like all Priority bicycles, the Turi features the incredibly low-maintenance belt drive system (and it’s grease-free, too!). The elimination of a traditional bike chain that requires regular cleaning and lubrication, along with a derailleur prone to adjustments and servicing, is a significant advantage of belt-drive bikes.

However, our favorite feature of this comfortable hybrid bike is its Enviolo shifting system. Seamlessly integrated within the rear wheel’s hub, the Enviolo gearing system allows for smooth, step-less shifting with a simple twist of the grip shift on the right handlebar. Unlike traditional gear systems with distinct “steps” as you shift up or down, Enviolo provides a continuous gearing range, almost like riding on an airport moving walkway.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • While many Priority bikes offer various gearing options (1, 3, or 7 speeds), the Turi is exclusively equipped with the Enviolo gearing system. Its gearing range (between the lowest and highest gear) is wider than most other Priority bikes, making it better suited for riding in areas with hills. (That said, if hills are a regular part of your rides, a wider gearing range like that on the Polygon Path 2 would offer an even better experience.)
  • Hydraulic disc brakes deliver superior stopping power, even in wet weather conditions, providing enhanced safety and control.
  • The dual-leg kickstand offers significantly more stability compared to a traditional single-leg bike stand, making loading and unloading cargo or children more secure.

About the Classic Plus Gotham

The Priority Classic Plus Gotham Edition has been a reliable staple in our bike collection for years. From extended family bike rides to quick errands around town, this Priority bike consistently delivers a smooth ride and has required virtually no maintenance.

Based in New York City, Priority Bicycles are specifically designed to withstand the unique demands of urban riding. Our team has owned eleven different Priority bikes over the years, and they have all proven to be incredibly durable and long-lasting… even the Priority kids bikes which endure considerable wear and tear from their young riders.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The grease-free belt drive system requires very little, if any, maintenance. Most bikes use a bike chain setup, which is significantly more prone to issues and requires more frequent maintenance and repairs.
  • The 3-speed system keeps shifting remarkably simple while still offering the versatility to tackle moderate hills or ride efficiently on flat roads.
  • The bike is exceptionally lightweight, which makes a noticeable difference when riding uphill, carrying children, or embarking on longer rides, improving overall efficiency and enjoyment.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The thinner “hybrid tires” provide smooth rolling on pavement but offer less cushioning compared to the wider tires found on some other bikes, potentially resulting in a slightly less comfortable ride on rougher surfaces.
  • Available in both a women’s step-through frame and a men’s diamond frame. Choose based on your personal preference and height restrictions.
  • Due to the internally geared rear hub, a special adapter is required for bike trailers.
  • If you intend to carry a rear child bike seat on the women’s model, you’ll need to purchase a rack and a rack-mounted child bike seat separately. The men’s diamond frame is compatible with both rack and frame-mounted rear child bike seats, offering more flexibility in child seat options.

About the Co-Op CTY 1.1

Beyond its excellent quality at a fair price, purchasing a women’s bike from REI offers numerous benefits. You can order online and pick up your bike fully assembled in-store… and for a full year, enjoy complimentary adjustments and basic maintenance services!

A more leaned-forward riding position and trigger shifters make this city bike lean closer to a “fitness” bike compared to other hybrids on our list. The leaned-in posture allows the rider to exert more force on the pedals, enabling efficient pedaling and a great workout.

With 24 gears, the CTY 1.1 boasts the widest gearing range of any hybrid bike we tested. If you frequently encounter challenging elevation gains, this Co-op Cycles bike should be high on your list, offering ample gears for tackling hills.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • Order online and conveniently pick up your bike assembled at your local REI store, saving time and hassle.
  • Enjoy free adjustments and basic maintenance for a year, including brake and derailleur adjustments and chain lubrication (available to everyone, not just REI members), providing peace of mind and cost savings.
  • Easy returns or exchanges at your local REI store simplify the purchase process and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • If you’re an REI member, REI mechanics will fix any flat tire for free (forever!), a valuable perk for frequent riders.
  • Lightweight aluminum frame enhances maneuverability and overall riding enjoyment.
  • Rear Shimano Altus derailleur provides smooth and reliable shifting performance, ensuring seamless gear changes.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The 24-gear system offers a wide range of gears, and trigger shifters provide smooth gear changes, but they may require a brief adjustment period for riders unfamiliar with this shifting style.
  • The handlebars and stem on the CTY are positioned a bit lower and flatter compared to other women’s hybrid bikes. While this works well for many women, if you find yourself leaning too far forward, your local REI store can install a riser stem to provide a more upright riding position (typically for around $40).
  • If you plan to use a bike trailer, you’ll need a longer rear axle skewer to properly attach the trailer hitch. After ordering online, simply contact the store and request a longer skewer when they assemble your bike.
  • Available in both diamond and step-thru frame styles, catering to different preferences and needs.

About the Cannondale Quick CX

The Cannondale Quick CX is an excellent choice for women who primarily ride on paved surfaces but occasionally venture onto gravel or packed dirt trails. The CX designation stands for “cyclocross,” a cycling discipline involving riding on grass, dirt, and paved surfaces. While not a dedicated cyclocross bike, the Quick CX offers the versatility of a basic CX bike combined with the comfortable riding position of a hybrid bike.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The 1×8 drivetrain with trigger shifters is responsive and user-friendly, providing reliable and intuitive gear changes.
  • The bike delivers an incredibly smooth ride on paved surfaces. Pedal strokes feel efficient and responsive as the bike effortlessly climbs gentle inclines and glides down hills, enhancing the overall riding experience.
  • The included tires feature subtle knobs, making them more suitable for light gravel or packed dirt trails than the smoother tires found on other hybrid bikes, expanding terrain versatility.
  • The front suspension fork effectively absorbs bumps and unevenness, enhancing comfort and control on varied surfaces, whether paved or slightly rough.
  • Available at REI, allowing you to order online and pick it up fully assembled and tuned at no extra charge. Returns are equally convenient, simplifying the purchase process.
  • Purchases at REI include free adjustments and basic maintenance for a year, providing added value and peace of mind.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • Within the CX model range, lower model numbers (e.g., CX 1, 2) indicate higher component quality (suspension fork, brakes, drivetrain) and a correspondingly higher price point.
  • Water bottle mounts on the seat tube may interfere with frame-mounted rear bike seats on smaller models, potentially limiting child seat options on smaller frames.
  • All CX models are equipped with the same tires, designed to perform well on varied smooth terrains, ranging from paved roads to packed dirt trails, offering consistent performance across the range.
  • Standard models (diamond frame) tend to accommodate more rear bike seat models compared to women’s step-through models, offering greater compatibility with child seat accessories.

AVAILABLE MODELS:

Women’s Mountain Bikes (Recreational)

If a significant portion of your riding involves basic dirt trails, alongside occasional rides on paved surfaces, a recreational mountain bike is an ideal choice. Recreational mountain bikes are not as specialized as true mountain bikes designed for aggressive trail riding, but they offer ample cushioning and traction for basic, non-paved trails.

One of the primary differences between a hybrid bike and a recreational mountain bike lies in the tires. The wider tires found on mountain bikes provide enhanced traction and cushioning for off-road riding but exhibit slower rolling resistance on paved surfaces compared to hybrid bike tires. Consequently, riding a mountain bike on paved surfaces will require slightly more effort than riding a hybrid bike on the same terrain.

The distinction between true trail bikes and recreational mountain bikes comes down to components and overall build quality. True trail bikes, typically equipped with hydraulic disc brakes and an air suspension fork (features not essential for the average rider), generally start around $1,200 and up.

  • HANDLEBARS: Wide and straight with a slight rise, mountain bike handlebars typically position the hands wider than other bike styles for increased stability and control on varied terrain, while still maintaining a comfortable riding posture.
  • BODY POSITION: Similar to women’s hybrid bikes, recreational mountain bikes place the rider in a semi-upright position, with the torso slightly leaned towards the handlebars, striking a balance between comfort and pedaling efficiency.
  • WHEELS: Wheel sizes range from 26″ to 29″. Wheel sizes can vary significantly between models and frame sizes. For basic recreational riding, wheel size is generally not a primary deciding factor.
  • TIRES: Knobby, wider, and with more volume than any other bike tire type, mountain bike tires are designed to maximize grip on trails and provide cushioning over rocks and uneven surfaces, enhancing off-road comfort and control.
  • SUSPENSION: Most recreational women’s mountain bikes feature basic coil spring forks, which help smooth out your ride by absorbing bumps and vibrations. One of the key factors influencing price differences among mountain bikes is the suspension fork. High-quality air suspension forks, offering superior cushioning and adjustability for tackling larger obstacles, can more than double the bike’s cost.
  • GEARS: More gears are not always better. For simplicity and ease of use, we prefer women’s mountain bikes with 8 to 12 gears and a single shifter (on the right handlebar). However, these bikes tend to be pricier than those with two shifters (left and right hand) and 20+ gears, offering a wider range of gearing options at a potentially lower cost.
  • BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: Recreational mountain bikes generally work well with rear-mounted child bike seats (both rack and frame-mounted types). Many lower-end mountain bikes are also compatible with traditional front-mounted seats, but higher-end, more specialized mountain bikes often are not. Mid-mount “mountain bike” child bike seats are typically an excellent choice for mountain bikes, offering a secure and balanced child-carrying solution.

We tested the Xtrada 5 on basic green MTB trails. If you intend to tackle more advanced trails, the simplified 1x drivetrain (single derailleur in the rear) and air fork on the Xtrada 7 (compared to the coil fork on the 5 and 6) are worth the additional investment, providing improved performance and control on challenging terrain. If your riding is a mix of both paved and trail riding, the Xtrada 6 offers a great mid-range option, balancing performance and value.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The semi-upright geometry provides a comfortable riding position for casual cruising while remaining sufficiently aggressive for more adventurous trail riding, offering versatility for varied riding styles.
  • Available in 4 different frame sizes and 2 different wheel sizes (27.5″ and 29″), allowing riders to choose the best fit for their height and riding preferences.
  • Tektro hydraulic disc brakes deliver ample braking power in all riding conditions, ensuring confident stopping power and control, especially on trails.
  • Easy-to-use trigger shifters with a wide range of gearing (2×10 drivetrain) provide intuitive and efficient gear changes, allowing riders to tackle varied terrain with ease.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • Wider 2.25″ MTB tires excel on dirt trails but exhibit higher rolling resistance on paved surfaces compared to the thinner tires found on hybrid models, requiring more effort for paved road riding.
  • The coil-spring fork with 120mm of travel effectively smooths out small bumps and trail imperfections but is not designed for aggressive trails with larger obstacles, limiting its suitability for extreme terrain.
  • Wheel sizes vary based on frame size: Size S is exclusively available with 27.5″ wheels, sizes M and L offer a choice of 27.5″ or 29″ wheels, and size XL is exclusively available with 29″ wheels, requiring careful consideration of frame and wheel size compatibility.
  • Water bottle mounts on the seat tube may interfere with frame-mounted rear bike seats on smaller models. The Xtrada also lacks mounts for a rear rack, limiting cargo-carrying options.

About the Trek Marlin 4

The Trek Marlin 4 is one of the most popular women’s mountain bikes available. We’ve been consistently impressed by its comfortable ride, precise braking performance, and smooth, user-friendly shifting – all offered at a reasonable price point for those new to trail riding.

The Marlin 4 falls into our “recreational” women’s mountain bike category due to its remarkable versatility. It’s designed to excel at leisurely neighborhood rides with kids but is equally at home on gentle dirt trails, making it a versatile all-around bike.

Our “mom bike tester” has been riding her Trek Marlin for approximately two years and consistently raves about it. With a young child still in tow, she currently primarily rides on paved trails with her baby secured in a rear child bike seat. However, dirt trails are on the horizon as she and her sons embrace the exciting world of mountain biking together.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • Exceptional MTB geometry provides a comfortable and stable riding experience, inspiring confidence on varied terrain.
  • 2.2” wide tires offer excellent traction and enhanced cushioning, improving comfort and control on both paved and unpaved surfaces.
  • Mechanical disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power, ensuring confident braking performance in various riding conditions.
  • The coil-sprung front fork provides light suspension to smooth out bumps on trails or roads, enhancing ride comfort. It can also be locked out mid-ride for more efficient hill climbing, maximizing pedaling efficiency when needed.
  • Ergo grips are exceptionally comfortable and help prevent hand and wrist fatigue, especially on longer rides, improving overall riding comfort.
  • Kickstand mount is a convenient feature! While a kickstand is not included, our mom bike tester easily added one for added convenience.
  • Even if purchased online, assembly can be conveniently performed at your local bike shop, ensuring proper setup and adjustments.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • While the Trek Marlin 5 is the most popular model in the Marlin series, Trek also offers the Marlin 4, 6, 7, and 8, providing a range of options with varying component levels and features to suit different budgets and riding needs.
  • Trigger shifters (compared to grip shifters) are ideal for mountain biking because they allow for quick and precise shifting through multiple gears with a single push, enhancing control and adaptability on trails. While the mechanics might be new to some, they are intuitive and easy to learn.
  • If you’re uncertain about “how much bike” you need, any bike in the Marlin series can be easily upgraded over time. Starting with the Trek Marlin 4 allows you to begin trail riding affordably and upgrade components later as your budget allows and as you become more serious about mountain biking, providing a flexible and scalable approach to mountain biking.

Women’s eBikes

E-bikes are now available in every style of women’s bike – from cruiser to mountain. For this guide, we focused on women’s ebikes that are well-suited for city riding, offer excellent value, and can also be used to transport young children. The world of electric bikes is vast and varied, with a wide array of options offering significantly different riding experiences.

If you’re new to ebikes, be sure to explore our Women’s Electric Bikes Buying Guide. It covers essential information about ebike features, bike classes, and everything you need to know before making a purchase, and it highlights even more bike models than are included here. Here are some key differences to consider:

  • USE: Choose an ebike that aligns with your intended riding style and terrain. Similar to regular bikes, a city ebike with thin tires will lack traction on dirt trails, while an ebike with wide, knobby all-terrain tires will be heavier and slower-rolling on paved surfaces, emphasizing the importance of matching bike type to intended use.
  • CLASS: Ebikes are categorized into 3 classes – class 1, 2, and 3. These classes differ based on the maximum speed the motor will assist you and whether the bike includes a throttle. Bikes with throttles (class 2 or class 3) are prohibited in certain areas, so always check local regulations before purchasing, ensuring legal compliance and responsible ebike usage.
  • THROTTLE: A throttle on an ebike propels the bike forward independently of pedaling. With a throttle, pedaling becomes optional, offering effortless acceleration and cruising, particularly useful for riders seeking minimal physical exertion.
  • TORQUE SENSOR: Higher-end ebikes equipped with torque sensors allow you to control the bike’s speed through pedal input, mimicking the natural feel of riding a traditional bike. Lower-end ebikes typically lack torque sensors, and speed is controlled via the throttle, braking, and coasting, resulting in a less intuitive riding experience for some riders.
  • MOTOR: The higher the Watt rating of the motor, the more power it provides for tackling hills and headwinds. For city riding on relatively flat terrain, a lower-wattage motor may suffice, while riders in hilly areas or those seeking more power assist should consider higher-wattage motors.
  • WEIGHT: Ebikes are considerably heavier than traditional bikes! Most are too heavy for standard car-mounted bike racks, so transporting your ebike by car will likely require investing in a heavy-duty hitch rack designed for ebike weights, adding to the overall cost and logistical considerations.
  • BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: We DO NOT recommend using bike trailers with ebikes (unless the ebike’s maximum speed can be limited, such as with the Priority e-Coast). Most bike trailers have a maximum recommended speed of 10 to 15 mph, which is easily exceeded on an ebike, increasing the risk of trailer instability and tipping. While many ebikes are compatible with front or rear rack-mounted child bike seats, always exercise caution with speed and braking when carrying children on an ebike.

About the Aventon Pace 500.3

Our testers consistently raved about how much they loved the Aventon Pace 500. Beyond its comfort, ease of use, and affordability, it’s simply incredibly fun to ride! Whether you’re seeking a bike to replace short car trips around town, need extra assistance for longer bike rides, or simply want to rediscover the joy of cycling, the Aventon Pace 500.3 is a perfect fit.

What makes the Pace 500.3 so enjoyable? Unlike many similarly-priced ebikes, the Pace 500.3 offers smooth acceleration without jolting or lag. The “natural” feel of the Pace 500.3 keeps the rider feeling relaxed and in control, even when using the throttle without pedaling. The motor integration in some other ebikes can feel less refined, resulting in a more mechanical and less graceful riding experience.

Exceptionally versatile, the Pace 500.3 is compatible with a rear bike rack for carrying cargo or a child bike seat. It comes standard with front and rear fenders, as well as integrated frame lights that enhance visibility in low-light conditions, adding to its practicality and safety.

For added enjoyment, the Aventon ebike app allows you to track metrics like mileage and average speed. The app also features an active community of helpful members who regularly share tips, inspiring ride stories, and maintenance advice, fostering a sense of community and support among Aventon riders.

If you happen to live in an area where Class II ebikes (those with throttles) are restricted, the throttle on the Pace 500.3 can be quickly and easily removed without affecting the pedal assist modes, ensuring compliance with local regulations and continued functionality of the pedal assist system.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The Pace 500.3 is ridiculously fun to ride, both with and without the throttle! We’ve tested numerous ebikes across various price ranges, and the Pace 500.3 consistently stood out in the “fun” category, delivering an engaging and enjoyable riding experience.
  • Offers a comfortable, upright riding position, promoting relaxed and enjoyable rides, especially for casual or commuting purposes.
  • The thickly padded saddle enhances comfort for all types of riders, even on longer rides, minimizing saddle discomfort and improving overall ride enjoyment.
  • The throttle is easily removable, and the bike functions seamlessly without it, providing flexibility for riders in areas with throttle restrictions or those who prefer pedal assist only.
  • Available with both a standard and a step-through frame, catering to diverse rider preferences and mobility needs.
  • Integrated lights along the side and back of the bike frame enhance visibility and safety, especially during low-light conditions, improving rider safety and peace of mind.
  • Sleek design seamlessly integrates the battery into the frame while maintaining easy removability for charging, whether on or off the bike, combining aesthetics and practicality.
  • Compatible with a rear rack for hauling cargo or adding a child bike seat, increasing its versatility for errands, commuting, or family riding.
  • The free Aventon app helps track mileage, battery life, and milestones, and allows control of integrated lights, adding tech integration and rider engagement.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The Pace 500.3 is quite fast! Speed is easily managed using the 5 pedal assist modes, but it may take a little time to adjust to its responsiveness and speed capabilities, especially for riders new to ebikes.
  • The newest 500.3 model features a torque sensor, which was absent in previous models. This torque sensor enables speed control via pedal input, providing a much more natural and intuitive ride feel, enhancing the overall riding experience and control.

About the Priority e-Classic Plus

If you’re hesitant about embracing an ebike, the Priority e-Classic Plus is likely the bike for you! Designed to feel and ride like a traditional analog bike, the e-Classic Plus provides just enough assistance to help you keep pace with others or ride faster, but without the jarring surges of power often experienced on some ebikes, offering a more refined and natural ebike experience.

Built with a 250W front-hub motor, the e-Classic Plus delivers gentle power assist that is noticeable but not overwhelming, providing a balanced and controlled ebike experience. With three power assist levels and three gears, it offers ample riding options for casual use and varied terrains.

The e-Classic Plus also excels in ease of maintenance! Instead of a greasy chain, it features a smooth and quiet, grease-free belt drive. The bike also eliminates a finicky derailleur, as its three gears are integrated within the rear hub. Shifting gears remains straightforward using the grip shifter on the handlebar, maintaining user-friendliness and low maintenance.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • The quiet, grease-free carbon belt drive replaces the traditional chain, resulting in a quiet ride and minimal maintenance, eliminating messy chain lubrication and reducing maintenance needs.
  • The smaller 250W front hub motor assists in riding faster or further without feeling overly powerful, uneasy, or out of control, providing a more natural and controlled ebike riding experience.
  • The bike comes equipped with full front and rear fenders and a taillight that also functions as a rear brake light, enhancing practicality and safety in various riding conditions.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes provide ample stopping power, ensuring reliable braking performance and rider safety.
  • The double-footed kickstand makes getting on and off the bike easier and more stable, eliminating worries about the bike tipping over, especially when loading or unloading cargo or children.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY:

  • The e-Classic Plus does not include a throttle; pedaling is required to activate the motor. However, its natural ride feel makes the throttle unnecessary, offering a pure and engaging ebike experience (more details in our review).
  • There is no derailleur to maintain! The bike features three internally geared hub gears, changed via a handlebar shifter. These gears are well-suited for around-town riding, but more gears may be desired for hilly areas, suggesting terrain considerations when choosing this model.
  • Pedal assist modes are easily changed via the bike’s front display (3 modes), providing user-friendly control over assist levels.
  • The 250W motor is lower-powered compared to many ebikes, but this contributes to the bike’s exceptionally natural ride feel. If you seek an ebike to keep pace with friends and family on traditional bikes, this is an ideal choice. If your goal is to keep up with others on higher-powered ebikes, consider models with at least a 500W motor, highlighting power output considerations based on riding goals.

AVAILABLE MODELS:

  • One model available in Step-thru and Diamond Frame options, catering to different rider preferences.
