Unlock Cycling Comfort and Performance with Expert Bike Fitting

Embarking on my cycling journey, a basic bike fit seemed like a reasonable starting point. For around $100, I received the standard KOPS method and some angle measurements to assess hip and knee extension. The fitter was knowledgeable and helpful, providing what I’d consider a solid 90-95% solution at the time. Years later, a follow-up session brought minor tweaks, each session lasting about an hour to an hour and a half – time and money well spent for the improvements gained.

Fast forward about 18 months, and I decided to invest in a more comprehensive, ~$300 bike fit experience with a true artisan of the practice. The initial session stretched to three hours, supplemented by two 90-minute follow-ups (which could have easily extended further). This wasn’t just about angles and measurements; it involved a thorough evaluation of my body off the bike and sophisticated on-bike analysis using motion capture technology and saddle pressure mapping. Looking back, I would have gladly paid over $1000 for the level of insight and comfort achieved. It might sound absurd to say I paid $300 to move my saddle a mere 1cm up and 1.5cm back, alongside subtle handlebar adjustments, but the resulting comfort was transformative. I had resigned myself to enduring recurring ischial bursitis flare-ups (unaware of the actual term until recently) and persistent shoulder discomfort, both of which were virtually eliminated post-fit. In just three hours, I gained more understanding of my body than in 15 years of cycling and 40 years of life.

If you’re considering a bike fit, here’s my advice:

  • The ultimate goal is your comfort, not conforming to a rigid system. You are the client, and if comfort isn’t the primary outcome, there’s an issue.
  • Open communication is paramount. Express any discomfort or dissatisfaction with adjustments or your position clearly to your fitter. They should actively address your concerns – they aren’t mind readers.
