Compared to other types of bike locks, chain locks exhibit enhanced resistance to specific theft techniques. They are immune to bottle jack and leverage attacks and present a greater challenge to power tool assaults like angle grinders.
Despite these benefits, it’s essential to acknowledge their primary disadvantage: weight. Chain locks are considerably heavier than u-locks providing comparable security levels. This weight factor necessitates categorizing chain locks into two distinct groups:
- Portable Chain Locks: Lighter options designed for everyday street use and convenient bike transport.
- Stationary Chain Locks: Heavier-duty chains intended for fixed locations like homes, workplaces, sheds, or garages.
Prior to purchasing a bike chain and lock, determine your priority: portability or maximum stationary security?
This guide explores six top-rated bike chain locks based on rigorous testing, categorized by portability and stationary use. Furthermore, it includes a comprehensive guide to selecting the ideal chain lock tailored to your specific security needs, along with a quick quiz to determine your required security level.

Viking Silver 90 Pros
- Unique magnetic fastening system
- Easy to carry and operate
- Good medium-level security
- Versatile locking options
Viking Silver 90 Cons
- Rubber sheath durability could be improved
- More affordable Silver-rated locks are available
Testing the 35.4″ (90 cm) version, weighing 2.98 lbs (1.35 kg), equivalent to 3.5 cans of soda, reveals it’s not a featherweight lock. Numerous lighter u-locks exist. However, its 90 cm length offers significantly more locking flexibility than any u-lock, including securing two bikes simultaneously, which is quite remarkable.
Seatylock Viking Silver 90 around lamppost
However, it’s not intended for high-risk environments. Its 7mm chain links are susceptible to bolt cutters if a thief gains leverage by positioning the lock close to the ground.
The solution lies in maintaining chain elevation. For a 7mm chain, tightly wrap it around the top tube or seat stays and rear wheel, keeping it elevated.
Seatylock Viking Silver 90 high up on stand
A notable feature of the SeatyLock Viking is its magnetized shackle. This innovative design simplifies joining the ends, especially in crowded bike racks, enhancing user-friendliness.
The SeatyLock Viking is also available in 43.3″ (110 cm) and 55.1″ (140 cm) lengths for extended reach. A shorter 21.5″ (55 cm) version would be ideal for city cyclists prioritizing chain flexibility with u-lock-like compactness.
Seatylock Viking Silver 90 vs Kryptonite Kryptolok
Potential drawbacks include its mid-security level and build quality concerns. Compared to the robust plastic casing of Kryptonite locks, the Viking’s thin rubber sheath appears less durable and can be easily displaced, exposing the chain links.
Nonetheless, the Viking Silver range presents the lightest Sold Secure Silver-rated chain locks. If you seek a chain offering extensive locking options without excessive weight, it’s a worthwhile consideration.
For in-depth details, refer to the comprehensive SeatyLock Viking Silver 90 review.
2. Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2: Security & Practicality in Perfect Balance!

Note: The Hiplok Gold is not designed to be locked around the waist for safety reasons. It features a clip for quick fastening and unfastening and adjusts to fit waists from 28” (71 cm) to 44” (112 cm).
Weighing 2.4 kg (5.3 lb), similar to 6.5 soda cans, the Hiplok Gold carries noticeable weight but remains comfortable when worn.
The Hiplok Gold is available in a single 33.5″ (85 cm) length, offering ample locking options. The Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 comes in four lengths, from 21.5″ (55 cm) to 63.0″ (160 cm).
Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 1055 with Coke
For portable security, the shortest 21.5″ (55 cm) Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 is recommended due to weight considerations. The 35.5″ (90 cm) version, closer in length to the Hiplok Gold, weighs considerably more at 7.5 soda cans, becoming cumbersome for everyday carry without the wearable design of the Hiplok Gold.
The shortest Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 is lighter than the Hiplok Gold at 2 kg (4.4 lb), equivalent to 5.5 soda cans, while providing comparable internal locking space to a standard u-lock with added chain flexibility.
Hiplok Gold chain with Coke
The choice hinges on prioritizing Hiplok Gold’s length and portability versus Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 1055 Mini’s higher security and lighter weight. For city cyclists with standard bikes, the Kryptonite Evolution might be preferable. However, ebike or city bike riders, or those needing to lock multiple bikes, might find the Hiplok Gold’s length and wearability more advantageous.

The 39.0″ (100 cm) chain utilizes a noose design, optimizing its usable length by eliminating the need for doubling back around the bike and anchor point. The included u-lock (Hiplok DX) adds further reach.
Paired with a ground or wall anchor like the Hiplok ANKR [Amazon], the Hiplok DXXL creates a highly practical and secure home bike storage solution.
The Hiplok DX u-lock, included with the DXXL, can also be used independently as a portable street lock. Its belt clip enhances portability and is recognized as a top-rated mini u-lock.
Hiplok DX around back wheel
The Hiplok DXXL provides both excellent stationary and viable portable security. While the Hiplok DX is a mini u-lock, potentially limiting its versatility in all situations, ebike owners or riders less concerned about weight can carry both the chain and u-lock for maximum security in diverse scenarios.
For detailed information on the u-lock, consult the Hiplok DX review. A comprehensive review of the Hiplok XL chain is forthcoming.
5. Hiplok Mega Chain: The Ultimate Stationary Chain Lock for Bicycles and Motorbikes

Hiplok Mega Chain Pros
- Unsurpassed chain security
- Noose design for efficient length utilization
- Compatible with high-security D1000 & DX1000 u-locks
Hiplok Mega Chain Cons
- Very high cost
- Extremely heavy and bulky
- Incompatible with some ground anchors
Although theoretically vulnerable to the largest bolt cutters under specific conditions (ground leverage, proper technique, and substantial force), the Hiplok Mega Chain addresses the demand for ultimate chain lock security, particularly with Pragmasis and Almax no longer operating. Its 22mm links are impervious to bolt cutters.
22mm represents the thickest chain link size practically achievable in bike locks; any thicker would be excessively unwieldy.
The Hiplok Mega Chain weighs 12.3 kg (27 lb), equivalent to 33 soda cans. Its 51″ (130 cm) length, coupled with a noose design, maximizes locking efficiency.
Hiplok Mega Chain around motorbike
The Hiplok Mega Chain does not include a lock and its substantial links may not fit through all ground anchor openings. Careful consideration is needed when selecting compatible components.
It is compatible with angle grinder-resistant u-locks like the Hiplok D1000 and DX1000 (and thus also the Litelok X1 and X3). The chain can be looped around the bike and secured with one of these u-locks attached to a ground anchor.
Ground anchors accommodating this chain’s thickness are available. Consult the guide to the best ground anchors for chain size compatibility.
Hiplok Mega Chain noose
Hiplok offers bundles combining the Mega Chain with the DX1000 u-lock, or with the DX1000 u-lock and A1000 ground anchor, at discounted prices and discounted prices respectively.
The Hiplok Mega Chain, when paired with the right lock and ground anchor, provides an unparalleled security setup for bicycles.
How to Choose a Chain Lock for Your Bicycle
Selecting the right bike chain and lock requires careful consideration of several key factors. This section delves into these aspects, including a quiz to help determine your specific security needs. We’ll also review Sold Secure-rated chain locks with link diameters ranging from 6mm to 16mm.
The Chain
Chain quality varies significantly. Reliable security necessitates chain links crafted from high-grade, core-hardened steel alloy that resists brittleness. Purchasing from reputable brands like Kryptonite, OnGuard, Abus, or Hiplok ensures this quality.
Chain links typically feature rounded edges. However, some security chains now employ hexagonal or square links, purported to be more resistant to bolt cutters by distributing pressure over a larger area.
Hexagonal chain links
Round chain links
However, in practice, used bolt cutters with blade imperfections can catch on the edges of these shaped links, potentially facilitating grip. Consequently, differently shaped links offer no demonstrably superior protection over round links and may even be easier to cut.
Ultimately, chain link thickness dictates security level.
Chain Link Thickness | Vulnerable to Bolt Cutters? |
---|---|
< 10 mm | Yes (medium size) |
13 – 15 mm | Yes (only largest 36″ and 42″) |
16 mm and above | No |
Links under 10 mm diameter are easily cut with medium bolt cutters if properly positioned. 10-12 mm links can sometimes be cut with medium bolt cutters by skilled thieves with good leverage. 13-15 mm links resist all but the largest 42″ bolt cutters, uncommon among bike thieves. Links 16 mm and thicker are impervious to manual bolt cutters.
Different chain link sizes
Regardless of thickness, keeping the chain elevated off the ground significantly reduces cropping risk. Thieves require ground leverage for effective bolt cutter operation. Higher chain placement diminishes leverage and cutting effectiveness.
The Lock
A chain lock’s overall security is limited by its weakest component. A robust chain paired with a substandard padlock negates the chain’s strength.
Chain locks typically include integrated locking mechanisms, sometimes padlocks, mini u-locks, or permanently integrated designs. The locking mechanism must be dependable and resist leverage, picking, pulling, and drilling attacks.
Kryptonite New York disc lock
OnGuard Beast padlock
Shackles, if present, should match or exceed the chain link thickness or be shrouded to prevent bolt cutter access.
Chain Locks: Length vs Weight
Chain locks offer greater locking versatility than u-locks due to their extended length. However, increased length directly translates to increased weight. Chain locks are inherently heavy. Even lighter chains can be too cumbersome for comfortable backpack carry.
While luggage racks, baskets, or seat post wrapping offer transport solutions, minimizing weight necessitates choosing the shortest chain length that meets your locking needs.
Before purchasing, measure your typical locking scenarios with a rope to determine the required chain length.
Accept that chain locks will always be heavier than u-locks providing equivalent security.
Kryptonite Kryptolok Chain Lock | Kryptonite Kryptolok U-Lock |
---|---|
Internal Space: 21.5″ (55 cm) | Internal Space: 21.5″ (55 cm) |
Weight: 3.90 lb (1.77 kg) | Weight: 2.85 lb (1.29 kg) |
Security rating: 6/10 | Security rating: 6/10 |
For example, the Kryptonite Kryptolock Series 2 u-lock weighs 2.85 lb (1.29 Kg). The lightest Kryptolock Series 2 chain lock at the same security level weighs 3.90 lbs (1.77 Kg), nearly a pound heavier (30% increase). Both offer 21.5″ (55 cm) internal locking space. While chain flexibility is advantageous, it doesn’t drastically expand locking options compared to the u-lock for this length.
A more practical 37.5″ (95 cm) Krytolock Series 2 chain lock weighs 5.55 lbs (2.52 Kg), almost double the u-lock’s weight.
Chain locks are heavy. If weight is a concern, consider a u-lock or a folding lock instead.
Portable vs Stationary Chains
Distinguishing between portable and stationary chain lock needs is crucial.
Portable chain locks are carried daily for securing bikes in public spaces. Stationary chain locks remain at a fixed location (home, etc.) for prolonged bike security.
While some locks attempt to bridge both needs, they compromise effectiveness in both areas. A two-lock system, with separate locks for street and home use, provides superior security and practicality.
Choosing a Portable Chain Lock
How Secure Should Your Chain Lock Be?
Sold Secure ratings provide the most reliable measure of bike lock security. Refer to the guide on choosing the best bike lock for more information on Sold Secure.
Sold Secure rates locks as Bronze (least secure), Silver, Gold, or Diamond (most secure).
Determine your required Sold Secure rating using this quick quiz:
[Quiz about Security Level – Quiz content from original article needs to be integrated here for complete rewrite, or removed if not feasible]
The quiz recommends Silver, Gold, or Diamond rated locks. Bronze locks are insufficient for any situation.
Security varies within each rating. Thicker chain links within a Silver, Gold, or Diamond rating generally indicate higher security.
How Long Should Your Chain Lock Be?
Chain locks offer extended locking options compared to u-locks. Longer chains provide more versatility but increase weight and cost.
Choose the shortest chain length that meets your locking needs. Use a rope to simulate chain length in your typical locking scenarios.
How Should You Secure Your Bike with a Portable Chain?
Avoid using chain locks like u-locks, securing frame and wheels close to the ground.
Chain lock close to the ground
Ground proximity allows thieves to leverage bolt cutters against the chain.

Secure only the frame, tightly wrapping the chain around the top tube. This minimizes chain length, weight, and maximizes ground clearance, hindering bolt cutter attacks.
Explore wheel security options separately. Learn more about proper bike locking techniques.
If wheel and frame protection is desired:
- Use a longer chain to encompass top tube and wheel, keeping the lock elevated.
Chain lock further from the ground
- Secure through seat stays and rear wheel, maintaining ground clearance.

How Will You Carry Your Chain Lock Around?
Shorter, thinner chains can wrap around seat posts. Chain bags attach to frames. Wearable chain locks exist.
Hiplok Gold chain lock belt
Consider seat post space, bag capacity, or wearable options before purchase. Chain transport can be more challenging than with other lock types. Explore bike lock carrying solutions.
6 mm Chain Locks
Avoid 6 mm chain locks. They are easily cut and lack adequate security. No 6 mm chain lock exceeds a Sold Secure Bronze rating, insufficient for bike protection.
Exception: tex-lock, a 6 mm chain encased in textile, resembling rope.
Tex-lock eyelet with X-lock
The Tex-lock Eyelet combined with the X-lock offers a versatile and surprisingly secure lightweight chain lock option.
Textile adds chain protection. Paired with Sold Secure Gold-rated X-lock, it offers versatility. X-lock secures frame, chain protects wheels in high-risk areas. Chain secures frame, X-lock protects wheel in low-risk areas, with extended chain reach.

Best Bike Chain and Lock Summary
Two main types of bike chain locks exist: portable and stationary.
Portable Chain Locks
Portable chains have links under 13 mm (12 mm maximum practical portability). Heavier than u-locks, but offer advantages:
- Versatile locking to various objects.
- Sometimes easier transport by wrapping around seat post/top bar.
- Resistant to leverage attacks, harder to angle grind.
Disadvantage: portable chain links can be cropped by manual bolt cutters if close to the ground.
Secure portable chains by tightly wrapping around top tube or seat stays to maximize ground clearance and deter bolt cutter attacks.
Compromise on wheel security if necessary, prioritizing frame security. Wheel security options available.
Carefully check weights before purchase. Even shortest portable chains are heavy. U-locks are better for weight-sensitive users.
Hiplok chains offer good security-to-weight ratios and wearable options.
Seatylock Viking Silver is good for low-risk scenarios. Kryptonite Kryptoloks or Abus CityChains [Amazon] are better for medium risk. Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 1055 Mini, Hiplok Gold, or Kryptonite New York Noose are recommended for high-risk situations.
Stationary Chain Locks
Stationary chains typically exceed 13 mm links, best for immobile, overnight security due to:
- Security: Resistant to bottle jacks, leverage attacks, harder to angle grind, >15 mm links are bolt cutter-proof.
- Practicality: Ideal for ground/wall anchors in sheds/garages, longer chains can secure multiple bikes.
Chain lock security depends on the weakest link. Ensure anchor points are equally secure. Invest in a good ground anchor and learn proper bike locking techniques.
This guide aims to assist in finding the best bike chain and lock. Regularly clean and lubricate chain locks to prevent jamming.
