15 mm Chain Locks

16 mm Chain Locks
At 16 mm, chains become impervious to manual bolt cutters, only vulnerable to power tools.

They are extremely heavy and non-portable, requiring careful handling to prevent bike damage due to weight.
British brands Pragmasis and Almax, previously leading 16 mm chain producers, have unfortunately ceased operations, limiting current options.
The Oxford Nemesis is a viable option (untested here). Alternatively, consider the 22mm Hiplok Mega Chain, currently the most secure chain available, compatible with angle grinder resistant U-locks (D1000 and DX1000) and ground anchors. Hiplok offers discounted bundles when purchased together.

Portable Bike Chain Locks

Therefore, for portable chain lock use, always secure your bike by tightly wrapping the chain around the top tube or seat stays, elevating it from the ground to deter cropping.
Consider alternative wheel security methods separately.
Carefully check weights before purchase. Even short portable chains are heavy. U-locks may be preferable if weight is a major concern.
Hiplok chains offer good security-to-weight ratios and convenient waist-worn carrying options.
For low-risk situations, the Seatylock Viking Silver is suitable. For medium-risk, Kryptonite Kryptoloks or Abus CityChains are better.
For high-risk scenarios, the Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 1055 Mini, Hiplok Gold, or Kryptonite New York Noose are recommended.
Stationary Bike Chain Locks
Stationary chains typically have links over 13 mm thick, ideal for immobile, overnight security due to:
- Security: Resistant to bottle jacks and leverage attacks, highly resistant to power tools, and >15 mm links are bolt cutter proof.
- Practicality: Ideal for ground/wall anchors, superior to other lock types for anchor use, and long enough to secure multiple bikes.
Chain lock security is limited by its weakest point. Ensure anchor points are as secure as the chain. Invest in a good ground anchor if needed and learn proper bike locking techniques.
