Adding to the unique atmosphere of Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is an intriguing sound art installation. As you walk or bike along the central pathway, you might notice melodic sounds seemingly emanating from the expansive bridges overhead. This captivating auditory experience is not accidental; it’s the creation of Craig Colorusso, a New York-based musician with roots in punk rock, who has brought his unique audio installations to Northwest Arkansas and beyond. Colorusso’s sound piece on the Coler bridges adds an unexpected layer of artistic appreciation to the natural beauty of the preserve.

The Coler Bridges themselves, architectural marvels at the park’s entrances, were designed by Modus Studio, as envisioned by Mike Abb, Creative Director for the Runway Group. Abb drew inspiration from Colorusso’s earlier “Sun Boxes” installation, previously showcased at Mass MoCA and later at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. This connection between art and environment is a defining characteristic of Coler.

When discussing public reactions to his bridge sound installation, Colorusso shared an insightful observation: “It’s an odd situation, coming from playing in punk rock bands it’s obvious who’s doing what because I’m holding an instrument or singing, but I can be just standing there and people don’t know that I made it. I think that’s kind of cool because I get their honest opinion. Besides saying they really like it, I hear things like, ‘Someone figured out how to make the bridge vibrate through the wind.’” This anonymity allows visitors to experience the art purely, forming their own interpretations.

Colorusso explains his artistic intent was open-ended, stating, “There is no sign by design because I just wanted to make something that makes people’s day a little bit better.” This desire to enhance visitor experience without explicit instruction is central to the art’s appeal within Coler Mountain Bike Preserve.

Funded by The Runway Group, this project exemplifies the commitment to creating a multifaceted destination. To explore more of Craig Colorusso’s artistic endeavors, visit his website.
