I have to admit, after spending some quality time on the Buell Super Cruiser prototype during Daytona Bike Week, I feel like I’ve glimpsed the future of motorcycle riding, and it’s exhilarating. For an hour and a half, I rediscovered the sheer joy of riding a motorcycle on the street. Life had turned riding into more of a routine lately, but this Buell reignited the passion that got me hooked on two wheels all those years ago. It’s pure, unadulterated fun, and so much more than just that.

Having ridden motorcycles for over three decades, including two decades as a moto-journalist, I’ve logged countless miles on a vast array of bikes. From custom choppers to iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, Victory, Indian, and even the once-popular Big Dog and American Ironhorse, I’ve experienced a wide spectrum of motorcycle designs. I can confidently say that Buell’s Super Cruiser prototype stands alone. While I recall the thrill of Nigel Patrick’s nitrous-powered V-Rod, the Super Cruiser, poised for production, is in a league of its own. It redefines what a Cruiser Bike Motorcycle can be.

The Harmonious Performance of the Super Cruiser
The first thing that struck me about this machine is its incredibly tight and cohesive package. Every component works in perfect harmony: the suspension, the braking system, the rapid acceleration, and the confident cornering. It’s a fluid, seamless, and utterly complete riding experience that elevates the cruiser bike motorcycle category.

Twisting the throttle unleashes instant, grin-inducing acceleration. And when you need to stop, the braking is equally immediate and responsive. The whole experience is remarkably smooth and difficult to fully capture in words. I genuinely believe Buell’s new Super Cruiser is set to revolutionize the performance cruiser segment and cater to riders seeking something truly exceptional. Yes, it’s incredibly fast, boasting a staggering 185hp at the rear wheel, but more importantly, it pioneers a new direction for cruiser bike motorcycles. While low-end torque has its place, the future of this genre might just lie in embracing high-range RPM power.

Rethinking Cruiser Bike Motorcycle Riding Style
During my ride on the Buell prototype, Bill Melvin, CEO of Buell Motorcycle Co., and my riding companion, pointed out that I was, in his words, “riding it wrong.” At 85 mph, Bill signaled for me to downshift to second gear. Initially, I was puzzled, misinterpreting his hand gesture as a peace sign. But when I realized he was telling me to drop down to second, my first thought was, “Second gear at 85 mph?” Habit from years of riding air-cooled V-twins had me cruising in fifth gear at that speed. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that style, but I had forgotten how to ride a sportbike, or rather, a high-performance cruiser bike motorcycle like this.

Perhaps the “Cruiser” in the name subtly misled me. But after Bill’s instruction, I barely touched fourth, fifth, or sixth gear. This bike thrives in the higher RPM range. It’s certainly capable of low-RPM cruising, but the real fun ignites between 7,000 and 11,000 RPM. It brought to mind the words of Carroll Shelby: “There’s a point, 7,000 RPM, where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless, just disappears. All that’s left, a body moving through space and time.”
The Future is Fast and Fun
My time on the Super Cruiser prototype, which is expected to closely resemble the 2025 production model (official release date still to be determined), has left a lasting impression. Rumors even suggest a limited run of “race-only” models might appear in 2024. Regardless, we eagerly anticipate the public’s reaction to the Buell Super Cruiser. We’re confident they’ll share the same joy and excitement, rediscovering that childlike thrill of riding, just like experiencing their first dirt bike all over again. This machine is the real deal, and it’s coming to redefine the cruiser bike motorcycle as we know it. Get ready.
