REI Co-op Kids Bikes: An Overview
IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL: Please note that in June 2024, a recall was issued for all 2022 – 2024 models of the REV 12, 16, and 20 bikes when used with training wheels. The CPSC recall was due to a potential hazard where training wheels could detach during riding, posing a fall and injury risk. This issue has been resolved in current models.
The Co-op REV 12″, 16″, and 20″ bikes are all single-speed models equipped with a coaster brake, smooth street tires, and training wheels as standard. The 20″ model also includes a rear hand brake in addition to the coaster brake, offering an extra level of control.
In contrast, the Co-Op Cycles REV CTY 24″ bike is a geared model, differentiating it from the smaller bikes in the line. It features dual handbrakes (and no coaster brake) and is designed without training wheels for children ready for more advanced riding.
Our Recommendations: We highly recommend the 16″ and 20″ REI kids bikes. We advise against the 12″ model and have reservations about recommending the 24″ bike without considering specific needs.

While the REI Co-op REV 12″ bike boasts good overall quality for its price point, a significant design flaw prevents us from recommending it: the coaster brake is excessively difficult to engage. In our tests with two children, ages 3 and 4, both struggled to activate the backpedal brake effectively and safely.
The braking system on the REV 12 operates like many standard coaster brakes; children are meant to pedal backward to stop. However, the REV 12 is equipped with exceptionally short crank arms and very small pedals. This combination creates too small of a leverage base, making it challenging for young children to generate enough backward force to engage the brake properly. During our test rides, applying sufficient backpedal force proved too difficult for our young testers. Without a reliable and easy-to-use braking system, we cannot recommend this bike for safety reasons.
For comparison, we measured the crank arm length on the REV 12 and found it to be 5mm to 20mm shorter than comparable 12 and 14″ bikes from other brands. Longer crank arms provide more leverage, making coaster brakes easier to activate. The crank arms on the REV 12 are among the shortest we have encountered on any kids’ bike.

REI has succeeded in creating a 16 inch bike that is both enjoyable for kids to ride around the neighborhood and built to withstand regular use. The REI REV 16 stands out as a top pick among REI kids bikes.

Key Considerations Before Purchasing

Enhanced Geometry for Better Fit
The 2022 redesign of the REI Co-op 16 inch bike represents a significant improvement over earlier models. REI kids bikes have historically faced challenges with their geometry. We are pleased to see that adjustments have been made to create a better fit for more children.
With higher handlebars and a reduced minimum seat height, the 2022 REI REV 16 now accommodates a wider range of sizes more naturally. The lower bottom bracket and shorter crank arms are designed to optimize pedaling comfort and efficiency by reducing excessive knee lift at the top of each pedal stroke.
Sizing and Fit Observations
The REI REV 16 offers a seat height range of 20.1″ – 24″. The images below illustrate the fit on two different 4-year-old riders.
On the left, our tester is 42.75″ tall, with the seat height at 21.1″. On the right, the rider is 44.75″ tall, with a seat height of 22.75″. Both children have the saddle adjusted to allow them to touch the ground with their tiptoes, providing a secure and enjoyable riding experience.
While the taller rider on the right can still comfortably ride the REV 16, the handlebar position is lower relative to her waist and closer to her knees. This positioning tends to perch her slightly on top of the bike, with her arms extending more downward than forward. Although not perfectly optimized for comfort, it remains suitable for continued use for several months. However, for children of this size, the REV 20 would be a more proportionally appropriate fit.
The “ideal fit” window for the REV 16 is narrower than we prefer, a common trait in budget-friendly kids’ bikes. Overall, the REV 16’s design and fit are superior to most other affordable 16″ bikes available.
Lightweight Design Benefits Young Riders
The Co-op Cycles REV 16 kids bike is constructed with a high-quality aluminum frame, similar to those found on more expensive bikes. This aluminum frame significantly reduces the bike’s weight compared to many 16″ bikes that use heavier steel frames.
For young, lightweight riders, bike weight is crucial. Ideally, a child’s bike should weigh no more than 30% of their body weight. Creating lightweight bikes typically increases manufacturing costs, but the REV series is exceptional in offering a weight that is comparable to, or even lighter than, much pricier bikes.
