What is The Bike Kitchen?
Since 2003, the bike kitchen has been a cornerstone of the San Francisco cycling community. As a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we’re dedicated to empowering individuals with bike repair knowledge. We believe in hands-on learning and provide a welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn how to fix their bicycles. More than just repairs, the bike kitchen fosters personal growth, leadership skills, and community engagement.
Operating as a cooperative workshop, the bike kitchen champions sustainable practices by promoting bike reuse and recycling. We offer affordable pathways for everyone to own and maintain a bicycle, collaborating with local groups to broaden cycling participation across our community. At the bike kitchen, you’ll find all the necessary tools and parts to repair or even build your own bike, supported by our friendly team of volunteer mechanics ready to offer guidance and answer your questions.

How Does The Bike Kitchen Work?
Accessing the resources at the bike kitchen is straightforward and affordable. You can choose a day-use option for just $5, covering your visit until closing, or become a member for a year with a sliding scale fee of $40-$100. Membership is also available in exchange for six hours of volunteer time. Both options grant you full access to our comprehensive tool collection and expert advice from our volunteer mechanics.
The bike kitchen also provides access to used and new basic parts for sale. For those looking to delve deeper, our “digging rights” program offers further opportunities to engage with our inventory.
In short: A $5 day-use fee gives you access to the bike kitchen during opening hours. A $40 annual membership extends this access for a year. For an additional $40 with membership, you can select a bike frame and utilize shop parts to build or customize your own bike. Volunteer options are also available for those without prior bike experience.
The bike kitchen is committed to inclusivity, proudly welcoming women, transgender individuals, genderqueer individuals, femmes, and anyone who has faced gender bias or discrimination in bike repair spaces. Our dedicated Women/Trans/Fem (WTF) nights are a testament to this commitment, creating a safe and supportive environment for all.
