Riders benefit from both ample power and practicality, featuring a large battery and motor alongside numerous included accessories such as fenders, lights, and a clear digital display. This compact workhorse boasts an astounding hauling capacity of up to 450 pounds, a feat unmatched by many cargo bikes regardless of size or price point. The inclusion of a telescoping stem and seatpost allows for easy adjustments to accommodate riders of varying heights, and its cleverly designed wheelbase remains short enough to fit on many standard bike racks, enhancing its versatility and convenience.

While its smaller wheels and folding frame inherently reduce stability compared to larger-wheeled competitors, the inclusion of a suspension fork and wide 3-inch knobby tires provides a surprisingly smooth ride and expands its versatility to handle a wider range of surface conditions. It offers a very wide range of fit adjustability and comes equipped with essential accessories such as lights, fenders, and a rear cargo rack with a 150 lbs capacity. A passenger kit is also available, increasing its functionality as an affordable e bike for various needs.

The distance an electric bike can travel on a single charge, its range, is a critical performance metric. Numerous factors influence range, including battery capacity, rider weight, terrain, and rider input. We assign range a 25% weighting in the overall score for affordable e bikes, reflecting its importance to consumers. To ensure consistent and comparable range testing, we utilized the same rider, test course, and methodology for each bike. We rode each bike from a full charge until battery depletion, meticulously recording ride data using a GPS-enabled cycling computer. For Class 2 models, we removed rider pedaling input by conducting range tests using throttle-only operation. For Class 1 models without throttles, we simulated minimal pedaling effort to activate the cadence sensor without adding significant rider power, allowing the motor to perform the majority of the work. This standardized test provides an accurate assessment of each bike’s minimum range capability and, more importantly, enables direct comparisons between different affordable e bikes. Our test course included approximately 100 vertical feet of elevation change per 2 miles, simulating real-world riding conditions. It’s important to note that all tested bikes could likely achieve significantly greater range on perfectly flat terrain, particularly with rider pedaling input and pedal assist engaged instead of relying solely on throttle.
Unsurprisingly, the top-performing affordable e bikes in our range testing were also equipped with the largest battery capacities. The Ride1Up Turris XR, with its 614Wh battery, outperformed the competition, achieving 22.1 miles of range with over 1500 feet of elevation gain/loss. Furthermore, it maintained the highest average speed among all tested models at 17.3 mph, demonstrating its efficiency and power within the affordable e bike category. Closely following was the Lectric XP 3.0 with its 500 Wh battery, which achieved a range of 24.5 miles with just over 1,000 vertical feet of elevation gain, highlighting the impressive range capabilities of even folding affordable e bikes.

For Class 1 models, we performed similar tests without throttle input, using minimal pedaling to engage the motor and assess its power contribution.
Equipped with a 750W motor, the Ride1Up Turris XR dominated the power metric among the affordable e bikes we tested. It accelerated from a standstill to 20 mph in under 10 seconds using throttle alone and demonstrated superior hill-climbing ability, maintaining speed on inclines that caused other models to slow significantly. This Class 3 ebike is also capable of reaching speeds up to 28 mph with pedal assist, offering high-performance power in an affordable e bike package. The Lectric XP 3.0 closely trailed the Turris XR in power performance. Featuring a 500W motor and Class 3 classification, it also reaches speeds up to 28 mph with pedal assist. We observed particularly quick acceleration from its smaller wheels when using the throttle, eagerly reaching its top throttle speed of 20 mph, showcasing the responsive power delivery of this affordable e bike.

Battery charging was largely consistent across all tested models, utilizing standard charging ports, cables, and charging times. All but one model featured removable batteries, a design preference for convenient charging and battery security, particularly important for affordable e bikes used for commuting and storage.
