They truly deliver remarkable value for the price. We tested both the single-speed Chatham with a coaster brake and the Chatham Plus 7-speed equipped with dual handbrakes.
Single-speed bikes excel on flat terrain, boasting fewer components prone to breakage or requiring maintenance over time. Initial assembly is remarkably straightforward, even for those without mechanical expertise.
Most single-speed beach cruisers utilize a coaster brake (back pedal brake). Coaster brakes are advantageous for their minimal adjustment and maintenance needs. However, they require more effort to engage and prevent backpedaling for balance recovery. If simplicity is your priority and you seek a bike requiring minimal upkeep, the Retrospec Chatham single-speed is an excellent choice.

Unlike traditional bikes, the Townie allows riders to position the saddle lower to the ground, enabling them to place their feet flat on the ground when starting and stopping. This makes the Townie noticeably easier to manage for riders who are hesitant or less experienced.
The secret behind the Townie’s exceptional comfort (and many bikes in Electra’s lineup) is Electra’s Flat-Foot Technology. Electra Flat-Foot Technology is not about electronics or apps; it’s rooted in the bike’s frame design. It positions the pedals further forward on the bike, rather than directly beneath the rider.
This design allows for full leg extension with each pedal stroke, achieved by pushing in a more forward direction instead of straight down. As a result, the seat doesn’t need to be as high, and riders can confidently place their entire foot flat on the ground when stopping and starting.
This setup is fantastic for those who may not have perfect balance or for riders who simply prefer more foot contact with the ground for added confidence when stopping and starting. However, because pedaling is more forward than straight down, less power is transferred to the pedals. While the Loft 7D is categorized under Electra’s “flat-foot technology,” its impact on this women’s bike is minimal compared to the Townie – honestly, it’s barely noticeable. If truly flat-footed stops are a priority, the Townie is the better choice. However, if an upright position is your primary goal, the pedal position on the Loft 7D is more akin to a standard bike, enabling greater pedal leverage. This makes longer rides or riding with children more manageable.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- The rare combination of efficient pedaling, an upright body position, and 7 gears.

Hybrid bikes are a versatile blend of road bike and mountain bike features. Combining the smooth-rolling, low-resistance tires of a road bike with the more upright posture and flat handlebars of a mountain bike, hybrid bikes truly offer the best of both worlds. Hybrid bikes are ideally suited for riders who primarily ride on smooth, paved surfaces.
If you plan to ride mainly on pavement with occasional all-terrain excursions, consider a hybrid bike with a suspension fork (typically found on higher-end models). If all-terrain dirt or gravel trails will be your primary riding environment, a recreational mountain bike is likely a better choice (see mountain bike section below).
Key Features of Hybrid Bikes:
- HANDLEBARS: Hybrid bikes feature flat, mostly straight handlebars that vary in height and width. Hybrid handlebars are generally not as wide as mountain bike bars nor as narrow as road bike bars, striking a comfortable middle ground.
- RIDING POSITION: Riders assume a semi-upright position. The torso is leaned in more than on a comfort/cruiser bike but much more upright than on a road bike. This semi-upright position optimizes power output with each pedal stroke. As a result, they are typically more efficient for use with child bike seats or trailers compared to comfort or cruiser bikes.
- WHEELS AND TIRES: Similar to road bikes, hybrid bike tires are thinner and inflated to higher pressures to minimize rolling resistance on pavement. This makes hybrid bikes fast and efficient on paved surfaces, but they offer less cushioning than recreational mountain bike tires.
- SUSPENSION FORK: With limited cushioning from hybrid tires, suspension forks help absorb bumps and vibrations on rough paved roads or gravel and dirt trails.
- GEARS: Gear ranges can vary from 3 to 27 speeds. The number of gears needed depends on the terrain’s elevation changes. Steeper uphills and downhills necessitate more gears. However, the average rider typically manages well with 3 to 10 gears.

We’ve been long-time fans of Priority bikes (for both adults and kids!). The Priority Turi is the most “high-end” model we’ve tested and quickly became our preferred bike for commuting to school with our kindergartener.
Like all Priority bikes, the Turi features the incredibly low-maintenance belt drive system (and is also grease-free). Eliminating the need to clean and lubricate a bike chain or deal with a derailleur that frequently requires adjustments is a significant advantage of belt-drive bikes.
However, our favorite feature of this comfort hybrid bike is its Enviolo shifting system. Safely enclosed within the rear wheel’s hub, the Enviolo gearing shifts seamlessly with a twist of the grip shift on the right handlebar. There are no distinct gear “steps” as you shift up and down to adjust to inclines, declines, or flat stretches. It provides a wide gearing range that feels more like riding on an airport moving walkway.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- While many Priority bikes offer various gearing options (1, 3, or 7), the Turi exclusively comes with the Enviolo gearing system. Its gearing range (between the lowest and highest gear) is wider than most other Priority bikes, making it a better choice for riding in hilly areas. (However, for frequent hill riding, a wider gearing range like on the Polygon Path 2 would be even more ideal.)
- Hydraulic disc brakes provide superior stopping power, even in wet weather conditions.

If a significant portion of your riding involves basic dirt trails, with occasional paved surface rides, a recreational mountain bike is the ideal choice. Recreational mountain bikes are not as finely tuned as dedicated trail bikes and are not built to withstand aggressive trail riding. However, they provide ample cushioning and traction for basic, non-paved trails.
A primary distinction between hybrid bikes and recreational mountain bikes lies in the tires. The wider tires on mountain bikes offer superior traction and cushioning for off-road riding but are slower-rolling on paved surfaces compared to hybrid bike tires. Consequently, riding a mountain bike on paved surfaces requires slightly more effort than riding a hybrid bike on pavement.
The difference between true trail bikes and recreational mountain bikes comes down to components and construction. True trail bikes, featuring hydraulic disc brakes and air suspension forks (not essential for the average rider), typically start around $1,200.
- HANDLEBARS: Wide and straight with a slight rise, mountain bike handlebars typically position the hands wider than other bike types for increased stability, while maintaining a comfortable position.
- RIDING POSITION: Similar to women’s hybrid bikes, recreational mountain bikes position the rider in a semi-upright posture with a slight lean towards the handlebars.
- WHEELS: Wheel sizes range from 26″ to 29″, varying widely between models and frame sizes. For basic riding, wheel size is not a critical deciding factor.
- TIRES: Knobby, wider, and with lower pressure than any other bike tire, mountain bike tires are engineered to grip trails and provide cushioning from rocks and uneven terrain.
- SUSPENSION: Most recreational women’s mountain bikes feature basic coil spring forks, which help smooth out your ride. Suspension forks are a major factor in mountain bike price differences. High-quality air suspension forks, which offer better cushioning for larger obstacles, can more than double the bike’s cost.
- GEARS: More gears aren’t necessarily better. For simplicity, we prefer women’s mountain bikes with 8 to 12 gears and a single shifter (on the right handlebar). However, these bikes tend to be more expensive than bikes with two shifters (left and right hand) and 20+ gears.
- BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: Recreational mountain bikes generally work well with rear-mounted child bike seats (both rack and frame-mounted). Many lower-end mountain bikes are also compatible with traditional front-mounted seats, but high-end mountain bikes typically are not. Mid-mount “mountain bike” child bike seats are often a great choice for mountain bikes.

- USE: Choose an e-bike that aligns with your intended use. Like regular bikes, a city bike with thin tires will lack traction on dirt trails, and a bike with fat, knobby, all-terrain tires will be heavy and slow-rolling on paved surfaces.
- CLASS: E-bikes are categorized into 3 classes – class 1, 2, and 3. Classes differ in motor-assisted speed limits and throttle presence. Bikes with throttles (class 2 or class 3) are restricted in some areas, so verify local regulations before purchasing.
- THROTTLE: A throttle on an e-bike propels the bike forward independently of pedaling. With a throttle, pedaling is optional.
- TORQUE SENSOR: Higher-end bikes with torque sensors allow speed control via pedaling (similar to a regular bike). Lower-end bikes typically lack torque sensors, relying on throttle, braking, and coasting for speed management.
- MOTOR: Higher Watt-rated motors provide more power for tackling hills. For city riding, a lower-watt motor is often sufficient.
- WEIGHT: E-bikes are heavy! Most are too heavy for car-mounted bike racks, so plan on using a heavy-duty hitch rack for car transport.
- BIKE TRAILERS and CHILD BIKE SEATS: We DO NOT recommend using bike trailers with e-bikes (unless the e-bike’s max speed can be limited, like the Priority e-Coast). Most trailers have a maximum speed limit of 10 to 15 mph, which is easily exceeded on an e-bike. Exceeding the recommended speed increases the risk of trailer tipping. When being mindful of speed, many e-bikes are compatible with front or rear rack-mounted child bike seats.

- No derailleur to worry about! The bike has three gears located within the rear hub (shifted via a handlebar shifter). The gears are ideal for around-town riding, but more gears may be preferred in hilly areas.
- Pedal assist modes are easily changed via the bike’s front display (3 modes).
- The 250W motor is lower powered compared to most ebikes, but this lower power contributes to the bike’s very natural ride feel. If you want an ebike to keep pace with friends and family on traditional bikes, this is ideal. To keep up with others on ebikes, a bike with at least a 500W motor is likely preferable.
