While we enjoyed testing the original Ride1Up Revv 1 hardtail, the Ride1Up Revv 1 FS full-suspension model elevates the experience, becoming the best moped-style Class 3 electric bike. This moped-style e-bike impressed testers with its power, comfort, and convenient features. A massive 1040 Wh battery provided an exceptional 37.17 miles in our range test, surpassing every other model tested and setting a new benchmark for 2024 electric bikes in this category. The 52V electrical system and 1000W hub motor deliver remarkable power and acceleration, especially considering its nearly 97-pound weight.

Ride1Up’s Multi-Class Speed System allows users to adjust the bike’s output for different terrains and legal requirements. Registering the bike unlocks an off-road mode, further boosting performance for private land use. While the Super73 S2 also offers an off-road mode, it doesn’t match the Revv 1 FS’s power and speed.

Featuring 50mm of rear suspension and a 120mm suspension fork, the Revv 1 FS is significantly more comfortable than the Ride1up Revv 1 hardtail, handling rough terrain with ease. Upright handlebars and a long, comfortable seat enhance comfort on varied surfaces. Full fenders, lights, turn signals, and a horn add urban utility and a distinct moped feel. The clear 3.5″ central display was highly rated by testers, providing comprehensive ride data, day or night, a significant improvement over the smaller screen on the Super73.

Assembly is simplified with packaging that doubles as a support stand. Tools and instructions are included, along with an assembly video for visual guidance. While not optimized for efficient pedaling, its nearly 40-mile throttle range minimizes the need for it. For adventurous riders, a second battery can be added to double the range. While its classification as a “bike” might be debated, its exceptional performance in testing earned it our Editor’s Choice award for Class 3 e-bikes. Testers loved the Revv 1 FS for errands and trail exploration, but its weight may pose transportation challenges, as few bike racks can support its 100-pound weight.

The Turbo Levo Comp is the best electric mountain bike, a full-power all-mountain trail bike featuring 150mm of FSR rear travel and a 160mm fork. The latest Turbo 2.2 motor system feels significantly more refined than previous versions, delivering 90Nm of torque for conquering challenging climbs. Despite intense competition in the full-power e-bike market, Specialized’s investment in innovation shines through in the Levo’s ride quality and motor integration, making it a standout among 2024 electric bikes. While specs may appear similar on paper to competitors, testers were consistently impressed by the Levo’s Brose motor’s power delivery. At 2.98 kg, it’s slightly heavier than Shimano’s EP801, but this weight is negligible on a 51 lb, 3 oz bike. The Levo motor provides 5Nm more torque, but more importantly, its modulation and responsiveness stood out in testing. Testers unanimously praised the Levo’s ride quality as feeling “more natural,” “more balanced,” and “more like a regular trail bike.”

While all full-power e-mountain bikes are heavy and powerful, the Levo’s integration effectively masks its mass better than any competitor. In range testing, the Levo covered 33.1 miles on its 700Wh battery, 5.4 miles less than the range-leading Canyon Spectral:ON with its 900Wh battery, but more than other bikes in our test group. Adjustable geometry and mixed wheels make the Levo Comp highly customizable. Adjustable headtube angle and bottom bracket height allow for quick tailoring to different riding styles and terrains. Its downhill performance ranked highest in our tests, highlighting its exceptional geometry and handling, even beyond its electric assist. Power assist in all three modes cuts out at 20mph, which the Levo easily exceeds downhill. According to lead tester Joshua Hutchens, “The low center of gravity and well-balanced kinematics on this bike give it the best handling.

While a top performer on trails, the Levo Comp Alloy has a few areas for improvement. The SRAM Code R hydraulic disc brakes are effective but lack the adjustability of the Code RSC brakes found on the Santa Cruz Heckler. Despite the increased weight of e-bikes, Specialized opted for a standard Fox 36 Rhythm fork instead of e-bike-specific forks with stiffer steerer tubes. The base model Levo display is a basic LED readout showing battery level and ride mode. Higher-end models feature the more advanced Mastermind TCU with customizable, colorful graphics and micro-tune options.

Overall, the Turbo Levo Comp’s performance is a clear winner, setting a benchmark for full-power electric mountain bikes. It’s not only our top performer but also the best value in full-suspension e-bikes, with only the Ari Wire Peak 2.0 being significantly less expensive but scoring lower in overall performance.

The Ramblas arrives trail-ready with impressive components for its price, including a RockShox 35 Silver fork, SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain, SRAM DB8 brakes, and a dropper post, making it an exceptional value proposition among 2024 electric bikes. In our range test, the 708Wh battery powered the Ramblas for 30.1 miles with 5980 feet of vertical climbing on a single charge. Aventon’s own A100 motor delivers a class-leading 100 Nm of torque, wowing testers with its power output.

This aluminum 29’er features 130mm of non-adjustable coil-sprung front travel and agreeable, though slightly conservative, geometry. Offered in four sizes, with the smallest using 27.5 wheels, the Ramblas is an accessible and affordable electric mountain bike for almost anyone.

Like other alloy hardtails, frame comfort is not its strength, and the wheels are not tubeless compatible, making it less suited for highly technical or aggressive riding. However, its versatility extends beyond mountain biking, offering ample power, front and rear lights, and even a kickstand, making it a capable daily commuter. Classes of Electric Bikes

The 3-class system is widely adopted for regulating e-bike use, but laws vary by state and country. As e-bikes become more powerful and blur the lines with mopeds, understanding class distinctions is crucial for legal and safe riding. Most e-bikes are limited to motors of 750W (one horsepower) or less, regardless of class.

Class 1

Class 1 electric bikes are pedal-assist only, meaning the motor engages only when you pedal. They use torque or cadence sensors to detect pedaling. Torque sensors measure pedal force and provide proportional power, while cadence sensors detect pedal movement and deliver consistent power. Class 1 e-bikes have a maximum pedal-assisted speed of 20mph and are generally allowed wherever regular bikes are permitted, including bike lanes and multi-use trails. Electric mountain bikes typically fall into this class.

Class 2

Class 2 e-bikes also have a top motor speed of 20mph but include a throttle, usually a thumb paddle or twist grip, allowing propulsion without pedaling, similar to electric scooters. They also offer pedal assist with adjustable power levels. Class 2 e-bikes are generally allowed in bike lanes and multi-use paths, but regulations can vary by location.

Class 3

Class 3 electric bikes offer higher speed limits, with throttles limited to 20 mph and pedal assist up to 28 mph. If you can pedal faster than 28mph, you’ll exceed the motor assist limit. Class 3 e-bikes often have more restrictions on who can ride them and where. Helmet use may be required, and age restrictions often apply (typically 15-16 years minimum) unless riding as a passenger. Most e-bikes offer a 20-30 mile range, influenced by battery size and motor power, as well as rider weight, terrain, and assist level. Rider pedaling significantly extends range. Batteries are measured in Watt-hours (Wh); higher Wh means more power storage and range but also increased weight.

Motor power typically ranges from 250W to 750W. Larger motors offer more torque, faster acceleration, and support higher speeds. Hub-drive motors, located in the wheel hub (usually rear), are affordable, easier to maintain, and don’t stress bike components. However, their single-gear ratio is less efficient, and tire changes are more complex. Mid-drive motors, positioned centrally near the pedals, power the wheel through the chain, utilizing bike gears for efficiency and better weight balance.
