My Bike Erg Journey: 2600 Zwift Miles and Counting

After acquiring a Bike Erg in April, I’ve clocked over 2600 “Zwift miles,” roughly 130 hours of riding. As a middle-aged cyclist with a background in 80s and 90s MTB and road racing, who transitioned to another sport for 15 years, I’m no stranger to indoor training. Decades were spent on turbo trainers during winters and late nights. Discovering Zwift this spring was a game-changer. Balancing family, work, and another sport leaves little time for daylight cycling currently.

The Concept2 bike erg has proven to be an incredibly robust and durable piece of equipment, built to last. It’s also a relatively affordable option. So far, it’s been flawless. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase it again.

The main alternative considered was a smart trainer using my own bike. Based on research and a brief 20-second demo, high-end smart trainers might offer a slightly more realistic road feel. However, this marginal improvement didn’t justify the wear and tear on my 20-year-old road bike’s drivetrain, not to mention the added stress and sweat.

For me, the bike erg represents the best value proposition currently. I anticipate that within a year or two, fully integrated smart bike ergs will enter the market at competitive prices. Once manufacturers perfect a realistic bike rocking motion for seated riding, climbing, and sprinting, that will likely become the ultimate indoor cycling solution.

Regarding specific aspects: the Q factor feels standard, perhaps similar to an MTB. Step-over height is around one foot. Noise-wise, it’s comparable to a Concept 2 rower – not silent. Vibration is negligible. Standing on the bike erg isn’t quite like outdoor riding due to the lack of bike lean; it’s completely stable. Ultimately, it’s a much better option than worrying about the strain on your cherished road bike frame when clamped into a smart trainer.
