Introducing Olivia Grace “OG” Barnes to the Joys of Bike Nature

It’s 5:08 a.m., and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills my living room as I eagerly anticipate a special morning. Today is the day I introduce my daughter to the wonderful world of two wheels and the great outdoors!

Becoming a mother has been the most incredible journey, overflowing with joy and countless blessings. There’s nothing I cherish more than guiding my daughter through life’s exciting adventures. My passion for biking has been a constant flame throughout my life. From childhood bicycle rides to competitive motorcycle racing and even mountain bike podium finishes, bikes have always been an integral part of who I am. I envision sharing this love with my daughter, Olivia Grace, and fostering her connection with nature through biking from a young age.

Inspired by friends who introduced their children to Strider balance bikes, I knew I wanted Olivia to experience the same joy. These small balance bikes, sometimes paired with rocking bases for the youngest riders, seemed like the perfect starting point. Little did I know, Olivia was ready to embark on her two-wheeled journey sooner than I imagined!

Olivia Grace, affectionately nicknamed “OG,” is an energetic and inquisitive eight-month-old. Her curiosity knows no bounds, and everything in her world demands immediate and thorough investigation. When our 12-inch Strider Sport arrived, we placed the box on the floor, allowing her to crawl over and explore it. My husband, Michael Barnes, a retired professional racer and Daytona 200 champion, assembled the bike on our porch while Olivia happily enjoyed her sweet potato, creating the usual baby mess. We wanted her to be part of the entire process, from unboxing to assembly, ensuring her first bike experience was associated with fun and family time. Assembling the Strider and its rocking base was remarkably easy, taking only about 10 minutes thanks to clear and simple instructions. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the materials, the robust hardware, and the overall sturdy construction. The bike itself is incredibly lightweight at just 6.7 pounds and boasts a sporty design. Securing it into the rocking base was effortless.

Later that day, we introduced the Strider to Olivia in our living room. Instantly recognizing something new, she excitedly crawled towards it. The rapid pitter-patter of her hands and feet as she rushed towards her new toy was absolutely heartwarming. She cautiously touched the rocking base, exploring its texture and attempting to move it, often glancing back at us for reassurance. This brief interaction marked her first encounter with her bike. Soon after, her attention shifted to other baby essentials, like investigating the dog’s tail and playing with her lion rattle.

To allow Olivia to familiarize herself with the Strider at her own pace, we placed it in her carpeted playroom. The next day, her intrigue with the bright yellow bike grew significantly. At this stage, “OG” is actively learning to pull herself into a standing position. The Strider has become an unexpected yet perfect tool for her to practice this crucial developmental skill. The bike and rocking base offer various grips and interesting textures on different parts, encouraging her exploration. Her current focus seems to be reaching the handlebars. She uses the rocking base and other parts of the bike to pull and push herself up, attempting to stand and grasp the handlebars. She has managed to reach them a few times before playfully toppling onto the soft carpet, followed by giggles. We celebrate each attempt, regardless of success, with enthusiastic applause, motivating her to try again. This interaction with the bike is not just about play; it’s about fostering her gross motor skills and confidence.

Next, I gently placed Olivia on the Strider seat. The Strider Sport’s handlebars and seat are easily adjustable, and I was pleased to find that her feet rested comfortably flat on the rocking base. The tool-free adjustability of the seat and handlebars is a fantastic convenience. Providing support at her back, I let her experience sitting on the bike and holding the handlebars. She clearly enjoyed this new perspective, happily sitting and gripping the bars with my assistance. Slowly, I removed my supporting hand, and to my astonishment, she remained sitting upright unaided! I was amazed that my eight-month-old could achieve this so quickly. After a few minutes of exploring the handlebar pad with her hands, she was ready for a new activity, and I helped her down. Her next adventure? Batting at the closet door stopper.

While we can only guess at her thoughts, Olivia seems to consider the Strider a primary toy now. She delights in feeling its different parts and textures, especially the grippy swingarm cover and the tires. This balance bike is already playing a vital role in her journey to standing independently. She’s even transferring the techniques she learns on the Strider to other furniture around the house, showcasing the bike’s positive impact on her development beyond just playtime.

Beyond creating a fantastic toy, Strider as a company operates on admirable principles. Their mission is clear and resonant: to get more kids on bikes. They actively donate bikes to broaden access for children, promoting inclusivity and healthy lifestyles. I strongly believe in minimizing screen time for children and maximizing outdoor play. When kids are on bikes, they’re not in front of screens; they’re outside breathing fresh air, interacting with others, getting a little dirty, and absorbing Vitamin D from the sun – exactly as nature intended. Integrating “Bike Nature Og” into a child’s life from an early age sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits and outdoor appreciation.

I am incredibly grateful that OG will learn to ride a bike so early in her life. It’s a fundamental skill that enhances balance and overall coordination. Perhaps it’s old-fashioned, but childhood and bicycles go hand in hand! I’m excited to continue this mini-series, documenting Olivia’s progress, sharing effective teaching methods, and observing her unique journey. The Strider website (StriderBikes.com) offers valuable tips and instructional videos as a resource. Every baby develops at their own rhythm, and I intend to support and encourage Olivia without rushing or forcing her. Scooting around on the Strider is a skill I eagerly anticipate her mastering. Stay tuned for future updates on her milestones! It’s now 7:00 a.m., time to embrace the day. Until next time!
