Your Guide to Semester Bike Rentals at Emory University

Looking for a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around Emory University? Emory Transportation and Parking Services (TPS) offers a fantastic bike rental program for faculty, staff, and students. Renting a bike for the semester is easy and affordable, providing you with a healthy and sustainable transportation option across campus and beyond.

Who Can Rent a Bike?

The Emory bike rental program is available to all current Emory University faculty, staff, and students. It’s a great opportunity to experience the campus in a new way, get some exercise, and reduce your carbon footprint. Before you request a bike, be sure to review the Bike Emory General Guidelines and the Georgia Bike Sense Guide to familiarize yourself with the program rules and safe cycling practices.

How to Rent Your Bike

Renting a bike is a straightforward process:

  1. Submit a Request: Start by filling out the Request A Bike form. This initial step lets TPS know you’re interested in a bike rental.
  2. Wait for Contact: A member of the TPS team will reach out to you after you submit your request. They will provide you with the next steps in the bike rental process and answer any initial questions you might have.
  3. Payment and Pickup: Once your rental is confirmed, you’ll need to visit the Parking Office to pay the rental fee and pick up your bike. The Parking Office is located at 1945 Starvine Way, Suite 400B, on the 4th level of the Starvine Deck.

Bike Rental Periods and Fees

Emory’s bike rental program operates on a semester basis, aligning with the academic calendar:

  • Fall Semester: August – December: $50
  • Spring Semester: January – May: $50
  • Summer Semester: May – August: $50

In addition to the semester rental fee of $50, there are a few other costs to keep in mind:

  • Security Deposit: A refundable $50 security deposit is required for all bike rentals. This deposit will be returned to you when you return the bike in good condition at the end of your rental period.
  • Lock Rental (Optional): You can rent a lock for a small additional fee. This includes a $5 deposit and a $10 rental fee.
  • Helmet (Optional Purchase): For your safety, helmets are highly recommended. You can purchase a helmet for $10.

Important Information: Security Deposit and Potential Fees

Remember the $50 security deposit is refundable when the bike is returned in the expected condition and on time. However, be aware of potential fees for late returns, loss, or damage:

  • Late Return Fee: Bikes must be returned to the Parking Office by 2:45 p.m. on the due date. Late returns will incur a fee of $20 for the first day and $30 for each subsequent day. These fees will be deducted from your security deposit initially. After two days of late fees, additional charges will apply.
  • Lost Bike Fee: If the bike is lost or not returned, you will forfeit your security deposit and be charged the full replacement cost of the bike, which is $650.
  • Lost Key or Lock Fee: Losing the key or lock will result in a $35 fee to cover the replacement of the locking system.
  • Damage Due to Misuse: Any damage to the bike resulting from misuse will be charged to the renter, covering the cost of parts and labor for repairs.
