Rediscovering Passion on the Bike Path of Hawaii’s North Shore

After two decades immersed in the world of skateboarding, my body signaled it was time for a change. The physical demands had taken their toll, and skateboarding was no longer an option. This realization brought with it a profound sense of loss and the daunting question of what would come next. Photography offered a temporary solace, a way to channel my creative energy, yet a deeper fulfillment remained elusive. It wasn’t until I embraced surfing that I truly began to reconcile with the end of my skateboarding chapter and open myself to new passions.

Moving to Hawaii seven years ago marked the beginning of another period of introspection. I found myself questioning my dedication to photography. Was it waning? Perhaps it was a shift in focus, a “mid-length crisis” as I now see it, rather than a complete loss of passion. My days were increasingly spent learning the nuances of surfing, exploring different boards, and navigating the local breaks. The Bike Path became an integral part of this new rhythm. Whether it was the daily school run with my kids, a quick check of the surf conditions, or simply heading out for a session, the bike path was my constant companion.

It was on this very bike path that I started to notice the beauty of everyday life unfolding around me. These fleeting moments, the rhythm of people going about their day against the backdrop of the stunning Hawaiian landscape, sparked a familiar creative urge. Each time a potential photograph presented itself, I regretted not having my camera at hand. This gentle nudge eventually broke through my creative inertia. I returned to capturing surf action, the dynamic energy of the waves and riders reigniting my inspiration. Beyond the surf, I began to document the everyday scenes along the bike path: people moving to and fro, deeply engaged in the vibrant water culture that defines this community.

My photographic passion has always been drawn to landscapes, portraits, and action. The North Shore bike path seamlessly integrates all three. It’s a living canvas where the natural beauty of Hawaii meets the energy of its people. I am deeply grateful to this bike path for rekindling my love for photography and for life itself.

This collection of moments is dedicated to Mimi, Ella, Ragnar, and the welcoming community of the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. A special thank you to the Florence Ohana for their support in making these images possible. Mahalo! Arto.
