Bike Ramp Test Resistance Too High? Troubleshooting ERG Mode Issues

I recently started using TrainerRoad and completed my first FTP ramp test in ERG mode, as suggested. However, I encountered a couple of issues towards the end of the test that I’m hoping to get some advice on.

Firstly, around the 350w mark, the resistance became incredibly high. While I felt I could have maintained the power by increasing my cadence, the resistance was so intense it felt like I couldn’t physically pedal any faster without standing, which the instructions advised against. It was as if the pedals were just too hard to turn over at a higher cadence.

Secondly, after the test ended, I intended to accept the results, but I mistakenly restarted the test. I didn’t realize for about 20 seconds and began pedaling again. I reached the initial power target, and it then increased to 360w, which I also achieved. Interestingly, at this point, the resistance felt lower than when I had stopped, allowing me to spin faster and complete the minute at 360w. The power then jumped to over 370w, and I stopped. The test gave me a 260w FTP, which is close to my estimated level but perhaps slightly lower.

Online, most cyclists recommend staying in ERG mode for ramp tests. My previous experience is primarily with Zwift, where I’ve only done virtual riding and no FTP tests.

Is the high resistance I experienced normal in ERG mode during a ramp test? Are there any tips to prevent the resistance from becoming so high that it limits my cadence? Or should I consider switching to resistance mode for future tests? I’m scheduled to repeat the ramp test today as part of my training plan, so any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
