Bikes Together, formerly known as The Bike Depot, is a dedicated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in the heart of Denver’s La Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Our roots trace back to the mid-1990s with the Park Hill Bike Club, an initiative by local residents who envisioned bicycles as a powerful tool for positive youth development. They sought to create alternatives to gang involvement and substance misuse, fostering a culture grounded in friendship, mutual respect, and diversity. The club offered recreational activities, educational programs, and valuable employment opportunities for young people in the Park Hill community. This vision gained further momentum in 2005 when LiveWell Colorado’s Park Hill Thriving Communities program recognized and addressed health disparities within Park Hill. They propelled the bike club concept forward by uniting community leaders, building strategic partnerships, allocating essential funding, and securing crucial in-kind donations. These collective efforts culminated in the establishment of The Bike Depot’s physical shop in 2008, marking a significant milestone in our journey.
Expanding our reach, Bikes Together inaugurated a second location in 2016 in the La Alma/Lincoln Park area, near 11th and Osage. By 2021, we consolidated our public operations to this central La Alma/Lincoln Park location, streamlining our services and enhancing community accessibility.
Since our inception, Bikes Together has evolved dramatically. We’ve transformed from a shop with intermittent hours to a fully operational, full-service bike shop staffed by dedicated paid employees and committed volunteers. We proudly offer a welcoming space, diverse classes, a wide selection of bicycles and parts, comprehensive recycling services, and a strong sense of community. Our partnerships have expanded to include public, private, and fellow non-profit agencies, allowing us to broaden our programming. We are particularly focused on creating opportunities for populations historically underrepresented in bike culture, including women, transgender & femme individuals of all races, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color of all genders. Furthermore, we’ve significantly increased the volume of bicycles we recover, recycle, repair, and refurbish, returning them to the streets of Denver. At Bikes Together, we are committed to empowering a new generation of Denver residents to embrace repair and renewal, championing sustainability over disposability.
