The Ultimate Guide to Chain Bike Locks: Security, Types, and Best Options

Chain locks are a popular choice for cyclists seeking robust security for their bikes, often favored for their flexibility and resistance to certain types of attacks. While U-locks often take the spotlight, chain locks offer unique advantages that make them an excellent option for many riders. This comprehensive guide dives deep into the world of Chain Bike Locks, exploring their strengths, weaknesses, and the best models available on the market to help you make an informed decision for your bike security needs.

Firstly, let’s consider the key benefits of chain locks. Their length and flexibility are paramount. Unlike rigid U-locks, chain bike locks can wrap around a wider variety of objects, allowing you to secure your bike to larger or awkwardly shaped fixtures. This adaptability is invaluable in urban environments where bike parking options can be limited.

Secondly, portability can be surprisingly convenient with certain chain locks. For cyclists who find U-lock frame mounts cumbersome, shorter and thinner chain bike locks offer an alternative. They can be easily coiled and carried around a seat post, providing a practical solution for everyday cyclists.

Finally, chain bike locks exhibit enhanced resistance against specific theft techniques. They are inherently resistant to bottle jack and leverage attacks, which can compromise some other lock types. Furthermore, their construction makes them more challenging to cut with power tools like angle grinders compared to some thinner lock designs.

However, these advantages are accompanied by a significant drawback: weight. Chain bike locks are considerably heavier than U-locks offering comparable security levels. This weight factor necessitates categorizing chain locks into two distinct groups based on their intended use:

  1. Portable Chain Bike Locks: Lighter models designed for daily use and carrying on your bike.
  2. Stationary Chain Bike Locks: Heavier, more robust chains intended for home, garage, or workplace security, and not meant for regular transport.

Before purchasing a chain bike lock, it’s crucial to determine your primary need: portability for on-the-go security or stationary security for fixed locations.

To assist you in your selection, we’ve tested and compiled a list of 6 of the best chain bike locks, categorized for portable and stationary security. Following these recommendations, you’ll find a detailed guide to choosing the right chain bike lock for your specific circumstances, including a helpful quiz to assess your required security level.

The 6 Best Bike Chain Locks

How to Choose a Chain Bike Lock for Your Bicycle

Choosing the right chain bike lock involves considering several key factors. We’ll explore these, including a quiz to determine your ideal security rating, and review chain bike locks with Sold Secure ratings from 6mm to 16mm link thicknesses.

The Chain

Chain quality varies significantly. For reliable security, chain bike lock links should be constructed from high-quality, core hardened steel alloy that balances hardness and resistance to brittleness. Reputable brands like Kryptonite, OnGuard, Abus, and Hiplok are recommended for ensuring material quality.

Chain link shapes also differ. While rounded edges are common, some security chains feature hexagonal or square links, purportedly offering enhanced resistance to bolt cutters by hindering grip and distributing pressure.

Hexagonal chain linksHexagonal chain links

Round chain linksRound chain links

However, used bolt cutters with blade imperfections can actually grip hexagonal or square links more easily, potentially negating any perceived advantage. Link shape is less critical than link thickness.

The thicker the chain bike lock links, the greater the resistance to cutting.

Chain Link Thickness Vulnerability to Bolt Cutters
< 10 mm Yes (medium-sized bolt cutters)
13 – 15 mm Yes (only largest 36″ and 42″ bolt cutters)
≥ 16 mm No (resistant to manual bolt cutters)

Links under 10 mm are easily cut with medium bolt cutters, especially if positioned for leverage. 10-12 mm links can be cut by determined thieves with medium bolt cutters and leverage. 13-15 mm links require the largest 42″ bolt cutters, uncommon among bike thieves. Links 16 mm and thicker are impervious to manual bolt cutters.

Different chain link sizesDifferent chain link sizes

Regardless of thickness, minimizing ground contact significantly reduces bolt cutter vulnerability. Thieves rely on ground leverage to maximize bolt cutter force. Elevating the chain bike lock makes cutting attempts far more difficult and less effective.

The Lock

A chain bike lock is only as secure as its weakest component. A robust chain paired with a weak lock mechanism compromises overall security. Locks integrated into chain bike locks vary from padlocks to mini U-locks or permanently integrated mechanisms.

The locking mechanism must be reliable and resist common attack methods like leverage, picking, pulling, and drilling.

OnGuard Beast padlockOnGuard Beast padlock

Shackles, if present, should be at least as thick as the chain links or shrouded to protect against bolt cutters.

Chain Bike Lock: Length vs Weight

A key advantage of chain bike locks over U-locks is their extended length, offering greater flexibility in securing bikes to various objects. However, length directly correlates with weight. Chain bike locks are inherently heavy, and even lighter chains can be cumbersome to carry in bags.

While some cyclists attach them to racks, baskets, or seat posts, minimizing weight is crucial. Choose the shortest chain bike lock length that meets your typical locking needs. Measure with rope to determine the necessary length before purchasing.

Chain bike locks will always be heavier than U-locks providing comparable security.

Kryptonite Kryptolok Chain Lock
Internal Locking Space: 21.5″ (55 cm)
Weight: 3.90 lb (1.77 kg)
Security rating: 6/10
Kryptonite Kryptolok U-Lock
Internal Locking Space: 21.5″ (55 cm)
Weight: 2.85 lb (1.29 kg)
Security rating: 6/10

For example, the Kryptonite Kryptolock Series 2 U-lock weighs 2.85 lb (1.29 kg). The lightest Kryptolock Series 2 chain bike lock at the same security level weighs 3.90 lbs (1.77 kg), nearly 30% heavier. Both offer similar internal locking space (21.5″ / 55 cm).

A longer 37.5″ (95 cm) Kryptolock Series 2 chain bike lock weighs 5.55 lbs (2.52 kg), almost double the U-lock’s weight.

If weight is a primary concern, consider U-locks or folding locks instead of chain bike locks.

Portable vs Stationary Chain Bike Locks

The distinction between portable and stationary chain bike locks is fundamental. Portable chains are for everyday carry and use on the go, securing bikes to public fixtures. Stationary chains are for home or fixed location security, protecting bikes in sheds, garages, or workplaces.

While some chain bike locks attempt to serve both purposes, they often compromise effectiveness in one area. A dedicated two-lock system—one portable for daily use and one stationary for home security—generally offers the best security and practicality.

Choosing a Portable Chain Bike Lock

Determining Security Level for Portable Chain Bike Locks

Sold Secure ratings are the industry standard for evaluating chain bike lock security. They independently test and rate locks as Bronze (lowest), Silver, Gold, or Diamond (highest security).

For deeper insights into Sold Secure and bike lock security, consult our guide on choosing the best bike lock.

Use the following quiz to determine your necessary Sold Secure rating:

(Quiz content from original article to be integrated here – needs to be extracted and translated)

Based on your quiz responses, a Silver, Gold, or Diamond rated chain bike lock will be recommended. Bronze-rated locks are insufficient for reliable bike security.

Security within each Sold Secure rating varies. Thicker chain bike lock links within a rating typically indicate higher security. Choose a thicker Silver, Gold, or Diamond chain for increased protection.

Selecting the Right Length for Portable Chain Bike Locks

The extended length of chain bike locks provides locking versatility beyond U-locks. Longer chains offer more options but add weight and cost. Choose the shortest length that meets your typical locking scenarios. Use rope to simulate length needs before purchase.

Best Practices for Securing Bikes with Portable Chain Bike Locks

Avoid using chain bike locks to secure the frame and wheels in a manner that positions the chain close to the ground. This increases vulnerability to bolt cutters.

Chain lock close to the groundChain lock close to the ground

Ground proximity enables thieves to leverage bolt cutters effectively.

Kryptonite Kryptolok Chain Mini 955 around lamppostKryptonite Kryptolok Chain Mini 955 around lamppost

Instead, secure your frame tightly, wrapping the chain bike lock around the top tube. This elevates the lock, hindering bolt cutter attacks.

Explore alternative wheel security methods (wheel locks) and consult our guide on how to lock your bike properly.

For frame and rear wheel protection with a chain bike lock:

Longer chains can secure both the top tube and rear wheel while maintaining elevation.

Chain lock further from the groundChain lock further from the ground

Alternatively, secure the chain through seat stays and the rear wheel, also keeping it off the ground.

Carrying Portable Chain Bike Locks

Shorter, thinner chain bike locks can be wrapped around seat posts. Chain bags are available for frame mounting. Some chain bike locks are designed to be worn around the waist.

Hiplok Gold chain lock beltHiplok Gold chain lock belt

Consider carrying options before purchase. Ensure seat post space or bag capacity. Chains can be more challenging to transport than other lock types.

6 mm Chain Bike Locks

6mm chain bike locks are generally not recommended due to low security and easy cutting. They rarely achieve Sold Secure ratings above Bronze, insufficient for bike protection.

However, the tex-lock is a unique exception. This 6mm chain encased in a textile cover resembles rope more than chain.

Seatylock Viking Silver 140 1.95 kg(4.3 lb) 55.1″(140 cm) Pedal Silver

In low-risk areas, 7mm chain bike locks may suffice for short durations with vigilant locking techniques. Avoid prolonged unattended parking.

Do not use 7mm chains like U-locks, close to the ground. Bolt cutters can easily compromise them with ground leverage.

Seatylock Viking Silver 90 around top tubeSeatylock Viking Silver 90 around top tube

Wrap 7mm chain bike locks tightly around the top tube, elevating them and hindering bolt cutter access. While large bolt cutters and sufficient force could still potentially cut 7mm chains even when elevated, most bike thieves lack such tools and capability.

Prioritize wheel security through alternative methods (wheel locks) to avoid compromising the entire bike’s security with a ground-level chain.

8 mm Chain Bike Locks

8mm chain bike locks, only slightly thicker than 7mm, offer moderately improved security but remain Silver-rated by Sold Secure.

14mm chain bike locks are strictly stationary security solutions. Their weight and bulk preclude portable use.

Best Chain Bike Lock Summary

Chain bike locks fall into two categories: portable and stationary.

Portable Chain Bike Locks

Portable chains have links under 13mm, with even 12mm being very heavy. They are heavier than U-locks but offer advantages:

  1. Flexibility for securing to diverse objects.
  2. Seat post or top bar portability.
  3. Resistance to leverage attacks and angle grinders.

However, portable chain bike lock links can be cut by manual bolt cutters if positioned near the ground. Secure portable chains tightly around the top tube or seat stays, elevating them to deter bolt cutter attacks. Prioritize wheel security separately.

Always check weight before purchasing portable chain bike locks. If weight is a major concern, U-locks are preferable.

Hiplok offers good security-to-weight ratios and wearable portability. For low-risk areas, Seatylock Viking Silver is suitable. For medium risk, Kryptonite Kryptoloks or Abus CityChains are better. For high-risk areas, Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 1055 Mini, Hiplok Gold, or Kryptonite New York Noose are recommended.

Stationary Chain Bike Locks

Stationary chains have links over 13mm, ideal for immobile, overnight security.

  1. High Security: Resistant to bottle jacks, leverage attacks, angle grinders, and manual bolt cutters (for links >15mm).
  2. Practicality: Work well with ground anchors for home security and can secure multiple bikes.

Ensure the anchor and securing point are as robust as the chain bike lock. Invest in a good ground anchor and follow proper locking techniques (how to lock your bike properly).

This guide aims to aid in selecting the best chain bike lock. Regularly clean and lubricate your chain bike lock to prevent jamming (how to stop bike lock jamming).
