Dykes on Bikes® to Roar at SF Pride Despite Dyke March Cancellation

The LGBTQ+ community felt a pang of disappointment this week with the announcement that the annual Dyke March in San Francisco, traditionally held the Saturday before the city’s iconic Pride Parade, would not proceed as planned this year. While this news has caused some confusion, San Francisco Dykes on Bikes® Women’s Motorcycle Contingent (WMC) wants to assure everyone that Dykes With Bikes will absolutely still be a vibrant and powerful presence at San Francisco Pride.

It’s important to clarify that Dykes on Bikes® and the Dyke March, while kindred spirits and deeply connected to the lesbian community, are separate entities. For decades, dykes with bikes have been an unmistakable symbol of lesbian strength and visibility, independently roaring into hearts and minds. While expressing solidarity with the Dyke March organizers and their mission, Dykes on Bikes® emphasizes its continued robust organization and unwavering commitment to leading the San Francisco Pride Parade.

San Francisco Dykes on Bikes® WMC has been proudly leading the San Francisco Pride Parade since 1976, and 2024 will be no different. The roar of engines and the powerful image of hundreds of dykes with bikes riding down Market Street will once again proclaim the enduring strength, dignity, and visibility of lesbians. The organization will not be participating in any unsanctioned events that may emerge during the time the Dyke March was scheduled. Their all-volunteer team is focused on ensuring the spectacular and safe execution of their Pride Parade contingent.

The Board of Directors of Dykes on Bikes® WMC extends their best wishes to the Dyke March organizers during this challenging time and expresses confidence in the Dyke March’s future resurgence. Meanwhile, dykes with bikes are revving up, ready to lead San Francisco Pride and continue their legacy of empowerment and pride.
