Why We Recommend the Retrospec Chatham
The Retrospec Chatham Cruisers offer exceptional value, providing impressive quality at an affordable price. If you’re seeking a fundamental beach cruiser without a hefty price tag, the Chatham is an excellent choice.
We tested both the single-speed and 7-speed Chatham Plus models from Texas to Destin, Florida, putting them to the test in a genuine beach setting. - Excellent build quality and a comfortable ride, especially for the price.
- Available in a wide array of attractive colors.
- Compatible with rear racks for added utility.

Why We Recommend the Sixthreezero EVRYjourney
SixThreeZero offers several cruiser bikes, but the EVRYjourney stands out as our top pick. It balances affordability with commendable quality.
The EVRYjourney incorporates the flat foot stop design popularized by Electra, ensuring stable and confident stops. The pedal placement is slightly forward, encouraging a gentle forward push motion rather than direct downward pedaling. This design enhances the relaxed, laid-back feel characteristic of beach cruisers.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Each EVRYjourney color option includes matching accessories – fenders and rear rack are standard, with optional bags, helmets, and water bottles, creating a cohesive and stylish look.
- The included saddle is surprisingly plush and comfortable for a bike in this price range.
- Equipped with reliable dual handbrakes and no coaster brake, providing effective and confident stopping power.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- The EVRYjourney is available with a lightweight aluminum frame or a more economical steel frame.
- The included rear rack is not designed for use with child bike seats.
- This model has a higher ‘easy’ gear ratio, making hill climbs more challenging and it is heavier (36.5 lbs) than other cruisers. It might not be ideal for hilly terrains.

Our Review
Why We Recommend the Priority Coast
The Priority Coast is a top-tier beach cruiser, engineered for ease of riding and long-term, low maintenance.
While perfect for any riding environment, the Coast particularly excels in coastal areas due to its rust-resistant components. Coastal environments accelerate rust on steel frames and chains, a common issue with standard bikes.
The Coast addresses this with an aluminum frame and fork, combined with a Gates carbon belt drive, ensuring smooth operation and longevity even with exposure to salty air.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Belt drive system (replacing a traditional chain) minimizes maintenance and eliminates chain drops. It’s also grease-free, keeping clothes clean.
- 3 and 7-speed models feature an internally geared hub, protecting the gears from damage within a sealed housing.
- Tires and spring saddle provide excellent cushioning for a comfortable ride.
- Color-matched fenders are included as standard.
- Each Coast bike comes with touch-up paint for minor scratches.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- The step-thru and diamond frame options cater to distinct height ranges, with some overlap in the middle.
- While bike trailers and child bike seats are technically compatible, models with dual handbrakes offer better stopping power and are recommended for these uses.

Our Review
Why We Recommend the Electra Townie 7D
The Electra Townie 7D, available in a spectrum of vibrant colors, is a high-quality cruiser distinguished by its Flat Foot Technology.
This technology simplifies riding by positioning the pedals forward on the frame. Instead of pushing straight down, you pedal slightly forward, allowing for a lower saddle height without compromising leg extension. This lower saddle ensures you can place your feet flat on the ground at stops, enhancing stability and confidence, especially for those who may feel unsteady on bikes.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Flat Foot Technology provides an exceptionally relaxed and stable ride, particularly beneficial for plus-sized riders, as detailed in our comprehensive review.
- The ability to stop with feet flat on the ground is a game-changer for nervous or hesitant riders, and appreciated even by experienced cyclists.
- Electra boasts a charming collection of baskets, bells, panniers, and racks to personalize your ride.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- The forward pedaling motion may require adjustment, especially for experienced bikers. Test riding is recommended at a local Trek retailer.
- The Townie is offered in a base model and an upgraded EQ model, which includes fenders and integrated lights.

Our Review
Why We Recommend the Electra Cruiser 7D
The Electra Cruiser 7D excels in ride comfort, offering the most cushioned experience among the tested models. Its wider tires and spring saddle effectively absorb road bumps.
Adding to its comfort, the Cruiser’s wide, padded saddle was the most comfortable of all cruisers tested.
The Electra Cruiser shares similarities with the Townie, yet presents key distinctions. First, its styling is more traditionally beach cruiser-like with sweeping handlebars.
Second, while it includes Flat Foot Technology, it’s less pronounced than on the Townie. You can lower the saddle for comfortable leg extension, but lowering it to achieve flat-footed stops might compromise pedaling efficiency. Setting the saddle for slight tip-toe stops is optimal.
Third, the Cruiser is particularly well-suited for shorter riders. While cruisers generally fit a wide height range, this can mean a less ideal fit for those at the height extremes. The Cruiser addresses this with 24″ and 26″ models, the 24″ being the smallest bike in this guide, fitting riders as short as 4’9″.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- The wide saddle provides exceptional comfort.
- Wide 2.125″ tires and a suspension spring saddle ensure a smooth ride.
- The 7-speed model features dual hand brakes for superior stopping power and no coaster brake.
- It handles hills better than most cruisers due to its manageable weight and low gear.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- The frame lacks eyelets for rack attachments.
- The Cruiser Lux, a 1-speed model, includes fenders.
- Single and 3-speed Cruiser models feature a coaster brake.
- Riders under 5’0″ might need the seat post trimmed for optimal saddle height.

Why We Recommend the Brooklyn Franklin 8-speed
For those seeking upright comfort with added speed and range, the Brooklyn Bicycles Franklin is designed to bridge casual cruising with more dynamic riding. While technically a city comfort bike, it shares the upright posture of beach cruisers but features larger wheels, narrower tires, and a broader gear range.
These enhancements make it quicker and more efficient for commutes and longer rides, while still performing best on paved surfaces, similar to beach cruisers.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- High-quality construction and design, featuring color-matched fenders and vegan leather accents for style and durability.
- High-performance Tektro v-brakes provide reliable and responsive stopping power.
- The saddle, while not a typical wide cruiser saddle, offers surprising comfort for varied rides.
- Free shipping to local bike shops and complimentary assembly.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- With a lower low gear and a higher high gear than other cruisers, the Franklin 8-speed is exceptionally versatile for both hills and flat terrains.
- For simpler maintenance, the Franklin 3-speed offers an internally geared option with reduced maintenance, though with a narrower gear range.
- The Large size tested suits heights 5’6″ to 6’3″. Riders near the upper limit might find it slightly compact. Consider the Bedford 8 for a similar bike with a larger frame option.
Classic Dutch Cruiser Style
Linus Dutchi 7i

Why We Recommend the Linus Dutchi 7i
The Linus Dutchi 7i combines the relaxed, upright riding position of a beach cruiser with a frame design inspired by classic Dutch bicycles. Dutch bikes are admired for their timeless style, blending vintage charm with modern sophistication.
We evaluated the 7-speed Dutchi, which offers versatile gearing for varied speeds and terrains. This casual cruiser is also available in single-speed and 3-speed versions.
The 3 and 7-speed models feature internally geared hubs, protecting the gear mechanism from damage and minimizing maintenance compared to traditional derailleurs.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- With a minimum rider height of 4’10” for the small model, the Dutchi is one of the most petite cruiser bikes available.
- Gears shift seamlessly, ensuring a smooth and pleasant ride.
- Available in a range of muted, fashionable colors for a refined, European aesthetic.
- Genuine leather handlebar grips provide soft and comfortable handling.
- Includes a rear cargo rack and fashionable, functional accessories that enhance its European flair.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- For hilly areas, the 7-speed model is highly recommended for its lower gearing, which eases climbs.
- Similar to the Priority Coast in gearing options (1, 3, 7-speed internally geared), the Dutchi uses a chain instead of a belt drive and lacks a coaster brake, appealing to riders who prefer back-pedal freedom.
- Thinner tires compared to typical beach cruisers are best suited for paved roads.
- Brakes may require initial adjustments. Professional setup is recommended if you’re not comfortable with bike mechanics.

Our Review
Why We Recommend the Priority Turi
The Priority Turi, with its flat handlebars, deviates slightly from the traditional beach cruiser aesthetic but offers exceptional cruising comfort and an upright riding posture.
We feature the Turi for its outstanding versatility. Ideal for those who desire a cruiser feel but need a bike for both weekday commutes and weekend leisure rides, the Turi excels in both roles.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Features a high-end Enviolo continuously variable gear system, offering seamless, step-less shifting akin to adjusting a volume knob.
- The Enviolo system is encased in a rear hub, protecting it from damage and minimizing maintenance issues common with traditional derailleurs.
- Belt drive system is durable, grease-free, and eliminates chain-related problems.
- Hydraulic disc brakes provide superior stopping power with less effort, especially in wet conditions.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- While offering a wide gear range, its lowest gear for hill climbing is not as low as some might prefer. For frequent hill riding, the Priority Coast 7-speed is a better choice.
- Adding a bike basket or rack with pannier bag is highly recommended to maximize its utility. The Hudson174 pannier tote is a particularly useful accessory.

Why We Recommend the Electra Townie Go!
If you appreciate the vibrant aesthetics and design of the Townie but desire an even more effortless ride, the Electra Townie Go! 7D is an electric bike worth considering.
The Townie Go! 7D features a low-wattage motor that provides a gentle power boost, encouraging sustained low-effort pedaling. It’s ideal for those seeking an e-bike that retains the feel of a traditional bicycle.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Flat Foot Technology for easy stops and starts with feet planted firmly on the ground.
- Integrated battery design within the frame offers a sleeker, more streamlined appearance than typical e-bikes.

Our Review
Why We Recommend the Priority e-Coast
The e-Coast is the electric variant of Priority’s popular Coast beach cruiser, maintaining its low-maintenance and rust-resistant benefits. For extended distances or truly effortless riding, an electric beach cruiser like the e-Coast is an excellent choice.
WHAT WE LOVE:
- Low maintenance belt drive is grease-free, rust-resistant, and highly reliable.
- Features a throttle and pedal assist up to 28 mph for rapid and easy travel.
- Adjustable max pedal assist speed (below 28 mph) caters to riders of varying confidence levels.
- Fat tires provide a smooth, cushioned ride and enable riding on packed sand.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- The rear rack is designed for cargo, not for child passengers.
- Transporting e-bikes on car racks is generally challenging, and the integrated rear rack on the e-Coast further complicates finding compatible rack solutions.
How to Choose a Beach Cruiser – Essential Buying Guide
Step-through vs. Diamond Frame (Sizing Considerations!)
Frame design is a matter of personal style and size preference. The classic step-thru frame (left bike) is a signature beach cruiser feature, while diamond frames (right bike), often with a slightly curved top tube, are typically marketed towards men.
Step Thru Frame vs. Diamond Frame
Both frame styles are suitable for all genders, but step-thru frames are favored for their ease of mounting and dismounting.
Beyond aesthetics, frame type often indicates sizing. Step-thru frames, traditionally considered “women’s style,” are generally smaller, whereas diamond frames are usually designed for taller riders.
However, most beach cruisers are designed to accommodate a broad range of rider heights. For example, the Priority Coast step-thru fits riders from 5’0” to 5’11”, while the diamond frame fits 5’5” to 6’5”. Riders within the overlap can choose based on style preference.
All bikes listed are highly adjustable in seat and handlebar height to comfortably fit most riders within their specified ranges.
Gears vs. Single Speed
Classic beach cruisers often feature a single-speed setup, reminiscent of childhood bikes. Single-speed simplifies the bike and reduces maintenance.
Modern beach cruisers frequently offer gear options (typically 3 or 7 speeds). Gears add complexity and maintenance needs but significantly increase versatility for speed, distance, and hills.
Single-speed is adequate for flat terrains, but gears offer substantial benefits for most riders, allowing adaptation to varying elevations and desired speeds.
Coaster Brakes vs. Hand Brakes
Coaster brakes, or back pedal brakes, are another retro beach cruiser feature. They are low maintenance and simple.
Many modern cruisers now include handbrakes, which, like gears, require more upkeep but offer greater flexibility.
Quality handbrakes provide superior stopping power compared to coaster brakes, allow for foot placement during stops, and enable backpedaling while coasting.
Riding with Toddlers: Bike Seats and Trailers on Beach Cruisers
Most cruiser bikes can accommodate child bike seats and trailers. However, dual handbrakes are safer than coaster brakes for this purpose. Gears are also preferable, as carrying a child can be challenging even on slight inclines.
Bike Trailers
Bike trailers attach to the bike’s rear axle via a hitch coupler. Most standard axles are sufficiently long for coupler attachment.
Internally geared rear hubs may require a special hitch adapter. For bike trailer options, explore our favorite bike trailers for kids, featuring over 40 personally tested models.
Rear Mounted Child Bike Seats
Rear child bike seats can mount to a rack or the bike frame. Rack-mounted seats generally fit beach cruiser frames better.
While every listed bike has rack mounts, rack inclusion doesn’t guarantee child bike seat safety. Rack suitability depends on weight capacity—sufficient for the combined weight of the seat and child. We recommend an Axiom Transit rack for child seat use on Priority bikes.
Front Mounted Child Bike Seats
Beach cruisers’ tall stems are compatible with front child bike seats. For cruisers, headset-mounted seats that turn with handlebars (like the Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini) are ideal.
Frame-mounted seats like the Weeride Kangaroo, which remain stationary, can cause handlebar interference with the child on very swooped cruiser bars. Avoid this style for beach cruisers.
