Like many, my journey into the world of electric bikes began with a simple desire: to transform my daily commute from a sweaty chore into a refreshing breeze. That’s what led me to the Izip Dash, purchased from my trusted local bike shop, a place I’d frequented for years for all things cycling. The Dash, sitting there on the showroom floor, was love at first sight, and a few weeks later, it was mine.
Those initial 1,000 miles were nothing short of blissful. My commute became sweat-free, exactly as planned, but the Izip Dash quickly became much more. Weekend explorations and joyrides became the norm. My wife, witnessing my enthusiasm, soon joined the e-bike revolution herself, with a (slightly used) Izip Path+ added to our garage – a purchase I was more than happy to “authorize.” Together, we’ve explored cities and coastlines, from the bustling streets of NYC to the charming paths of Asheville, Charleston, and the scenic routes of Florida and Maine.
However, beneath these cherished memories, a shadow of persistent mechanical issues has been looming over my Izip Dash experience. While my wife’s Path+ did face a motor failure early on (promptly resolved under warranty), my Dash has been a more frequent visitor to the repair shop. Two bottom bracket replacements, a rear wheel replacement, and even a complete motor replacement mark my journey, punctuated by numerous service trips, customer service calls, and email exchanges. And here I am again, with trips planned to Pittsburgh, Burlington, and Montreal, and my trusty Izip Dash sitting idle in the garage – broken once more. (Yes, I recognize the privilege in calling this a “problem,” but it’s my reality, and one I’m determined to fix!).
But let me be clear: I genuinely love this bike. I’m no stranger to long rides, with serious mileage under my belt, including three 200+ mile single-day endurance feats. The Izip Dash has consistently provided an incredibly stable and reliable platform. Over time, I’ve upgraded components like the disk brakes, and added practical accessories like fenders, a rack, and file cut tires. Furthermore, Izip’s customer service and warranty support have been nothing short of exceptional – truly exceeding expectations. I even received personal email responses from Larry, the president of the company, demonstrating their commitment to customer satisfaction.
With this history laid out, my current pressing need is to find a highly skilled, experienced, and reputable repair shop or independent mechanic who can finally resolve these recurring issues. Currently, the motor only engages intermittently when I pedal. For several months, I’ve relied solely on the throttle, but even in “Turbo” mode, the motor now cuts out under increased pedal effort, particularly on hills. Adding to the frustration, the bike throws intermittent error codes and blank screens, and inexplicably, my odometer recently reset itself to zero.
Chawn from Izip technical/warranty support has been fantastic, providing all possible remote assistance. However, my limitations lie in the time, skills, and specialized tools required to implement his recommended fixes myself. Therefore, I’m reaching out to this knowledgeable community for a referral to a top-notch shop or mechanic, ideally within a reasonable driving distance from northeast New Jersey, who can provide a definitive, “once-and-for-all” solution. The e-bike specialist at my local shop has moved on, and I believe it’s time for me to seek a fresh perspective and expert hands.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any guidance you can offer.
P.S. – I recently discovered Izip’s incredible clearance sale on a 2015 model for under $1,000. The temptation was strong, but I’m not quite ready to invest in another bike when I believe that, in the right expert hands, my beloved Izip Dash can be restored to its former glory and continue to bring joy to my rides. Hoping for a repair solution and continued peace on two wheels.
