If you’re on a tight budget, at a minimum, choose a pull-behind bike trailer with 20″ wheels and metal rims. Many budget trailers feature 16″ wheels with plastic rims, which are lower quality and result in a bumpier ride.

It’s crucial to know that you cannot safely pull a baby in a bike trailer until they reach 1 year of age. However, if using your trailer as a stroller, you can stroll with infants as young as 6 weeks old, provided you use appropriate infant support.
For stroller use with young infants, you’ll need a baby insert to ensure proper head and neck support. These inserts are typically used until the baby is at least 6 months old, and sometimes longer.
Personal experience: the baby insert in my Thule Chariot Cross was an invaluable baby item. It allowed me to resume an active lifestyle just 6 weeks postpartum. Burley’s Baby Insert is similar, but it prevents the trailer from folding when installed. The Burley Baby Snuggler allows folding but is less supportive and recommended for use from 3 months of age.
Not all trailers offer baby insert upgrades. Thule, Burley, and Hamax trailer/strollers are your best options if you plan to use your trailer as a stroller with a young baby.

However, this stated weight typically includes both children and cargo, and safety standards rate trailers for a specific maximum child weight. For example, the Burley D’Lite single has a 75-pound total capacity but a maximum child weight of 40 pounds! The Burley D’Lite X double has a 100-pound total capacity with a maximum combined child weight of 80 lbs.
These more specific child weight limits are usually found in user manuals, which are downloadable. Never assume the weight limit on a manufacturer’s website refers only to the child’s weight.
6. Seat Type – Hammock vs. Bench Seats: Comfort and Support
Hammock Seats: Budget trailers commonly use “hammock-style” seating, consisting of a fabric piece stretched across the trailer frame. These seats often sag in the middle and provide minimal support.
Bench Seats: Found in higher-end trailers, bench seats are padded and prevent sagging. These supportive seats are more comfortable and offer better legroom. They also simplify loading and unloading children, as the bench supports their weight away from the harness buckle.
7. Wheels & Maximum Speeds: Size and Performance
Kids bike trailers are available with 16″ and 20″ wheels. Upgrading to 20″ wheels is worthwhile as they absorb road bumps much more effectively than 16″ tires, resulting in a smoother ride for both parent and child. To reduce costs, 16″ tire trailers often use plastic rims, which are prone to cracking and warping.

Side windows on all kids bike trailers are made of plastic. UV-blocking windows are standard on all Burley and Thule trailers but are absent on entry-level trailers like Allen or InStep.

Adjustable suspension is offered on the Burley D’Lite X, Cub X, Thule Chariot Cross, and Hamax Outback. Adjustable suspension is particularly beneficial for families carrying very light or very heavy children.
For most families with average-weight children, the non-adjustable suspension systems found on models like the Thule Chariot Lite and Burley Encore X should be sufficient for comfortable rides.

The required storage capacity is largely a matter of personal preference. However, erring on the side of more storage is generally advisable! We often find ourselves carrying scooters, balance bikes, helmets, basketballs, lunches, and jackets for the whole family.
The shape of the trailer significantly influences storage space. Burley’s spacious, flat-bottomed storage area is larger than most and is excellent for carrying items like scooters after dropping kids off at school. In Burley X models, the seats can fold down, converting the entire trailer into a bike wagon or cargo trailer when not transporting children.
The storage area on the Thule Chariot Lite and Cross is considerably smaller, but these trailers are also less bulky overall.
Handlebar consoles also offer convenient storage for water bottles, keys, phones, etc., when in stroller or jogger mode. Both Burley and Thule offer handlebar consoles as optional upgrades. Thule’s console attaches to the trailer frame and remains stationary when the handlebar is adjusted. Burley’s console stretches between handlebars and moves with the handlebar as it’s adjusted.
11. Stroller Wheel Attachments: Choosing the Right Type
Kids bike trailers offer more than just biking functionality. Strolling is a popular use, and the stroller options vary widely. If you plan to use your trailer as a stroller, ensure it converts to the stroller type you prefer.

(1) Tow Arm Swivel Wheel: Basic Stroller Conversion
A small plastic swivel wheel attaches to the end of the trailer arm. It flips up for biking and down for stroller use. In stroller mode, the trailer arm extends about 1.5 feet beyond the trailer cabin, which can be less ideal in crowded spaces. Examples include the InStep Sierra Double and Burley Honey Bee.
The quality of this setup is basic on budget trailers like InStep or Schwinn but functions smoothly on higher-end trailers. This wheel style is standard on all Burley trailers that convert to strollers.
(2) Attached Single Swivel Wheel: Improved Maneuverability
Similar to the tow arm swivel stroller, but attached to the trailer body rather than the arm. It pushes smoothly but is less maneuverable than four wheels on uneven surfaces.
(3) Dual Swivel Bike Stroller Wheels: Best for Maneuvering
This is the most functional and user-friendly stroller type. Two small plastic wheels attach under the front of the trailer body, tucking in for easy steering and maneuverability. Thule Chariot models come standard as four-wheeled strollers, and Burley multi-sport trailers offer this as an upgrade.
(4) Jogging Kit: Designed for Running
Jogging wheels are designed for straight-line tracking while running and do not swivel. A true jogging wheel is at least 10″ in diameter and pneumatic (air-filled) for smooth rolling.
To turn a jogging trailer, you must push down on the handlebar to lift the front wheel and pivot the trailer. All multi-sport trailers offer a jogging wheel upgrade option. Examples include the Thule Chariot Cross and Burley Encore X.
12. Bike Trailer Stroller Brakes: Parking and Hand Brakes
All trailers sold with stroller conversion options are required to have a parking brake. Brake types range from simple straps around a tire to hand brakes on the handlebars. While brakes are less critical in trailer mode, a well-designed parking or hand brake is invaluable when used as a stroller or jogger.
Foot Brake: Standard Parking Brake
Similar to typical stroller brakes, foot brakes on bike trailer strollers are foot-activated and lock the rear tires. They are designed for parking and do not slow the trailer down like hand brakes. Foot brakes are found on trailers across all price ranges and vary in engagement mechanism.
Hand Brake: Enhanced Control on Hills
Designed to slow down a trailer, not stop it completely, hand brakes are essential for joggers and helpful for navigating hills in stroller mode. The most versatile hand brake is an upgrade for Thule Chariot Lite and Cross models and can be used in both stroller and jogging modes. The Hamax Outback jogging upgrade uniquely includes a hand brake but activates the front jogging wheel and is not usable in stroller mode.
13. Adjustable Handlebars: Comfort for Parents
An adjustable stroller handlebar significantly improves the usability of a trailer in stroller or jogger mode. Most trailers offer at least two height settings, achieved by flipping the handlebar and reattaching it.
The best kids bike trailers, including all Burley strollers, Thule Chariot Cross and Lite, and Hamax Outback, feature a swiveling handlebar with multiple height adjustments. Swivel handlebars are ideal for couples with significant height differences. Multiple-height handlebars adjust quickly, while dual-height handlebars are less convenient and offer less precise adjustment.

14. Folding Frame – Portability and Storage
The ease of folding a trailer can determine how often you use it. A cumbersome folding process can deter you from taking your trailer to trails. Folded dimensions also dictate whether it fits in your vehicle.

However, most kids bike trailers fold to some degree for easier transportation and storage.
15. Hitch: Connecting to Your Bike
The trailer hitch design affects the smoothness of the ride for both you and your child. Most budget trailer companies (InStep, Schwinn, Allen Sports) use a standard hitch design.
High-end brands (Thule, Burley) use unique, more precise hitch designs that minimize “give” and pull-back from the trailer while riding. All hitches sold in the US are designed to flex, allowing the bike to be laid down without tipping the trailer, simplifying loading and unloading.
