After months of deliberation, countless hours of research, and even a detailed comparison of nine top adventure motorcycles, the moment finally arrived. While my head initially leaned towards the Yamaha Tenere 700 for its lightweight prowess, with the KTM 790 (or 890) and BMW R 1250 GS as strong contenders, my heart ultimately steered me in a different direction. Today, I’m thrilled to share the story of how I rode away from the dealership on my brand new KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, a machine that has redefined my understanding of what an adventure bike can be.

The Unexpected Turn: Why the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R?
The decision, I admit, might raise eyebrows. Especially considering my initial quest for a lighter, more nimble middleweight adventure bike. And yes, the BMW 1250 GS was certainly in the conversation for a large-displacement option. So, why the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R? Let me attempt to explain the rationale behind this choice, a blend of desire, practicality, and a touch of irresistible allure.
The Allure of the Image and the Ride
Firstly, and perhaps most candidly, the image and sheer presence of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R played a significant role. Even while considering the KTM 790, my gaze kept drifting towards KTM’s flagship model. It commands attention with its imposing size, towering stance, and that distinctive, almost futuristic headlight. There’s no denying it – a part of this purchase was fueled by the raw, hardcore adventure persona that the 1290 SAR embodies. While the BMW 1250 GS shares a similar stature, it also carries a certain “mature rider” stereotype. And while I may be embracing the grey hairs of middle age, I’m not quite ready to fully embrace that image just yet!
Realizing My Riding Reality
Secondly, a crucial dose of self-reflection came into play. I had to honestly assess my past riding habits and anticipate future adventures. The truth is, a significant portion of my riding involves paved roads, even with ambitious off-road camping trips on the horizon. For those long highway stretches and exhilarating winding roads, a larger displacement bike simply offers superior comfort and performance. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R delivers precisely that, without sacrificing serious off-road capabilities, even if it’s not as agile as its middleweight counterparts.
The Deal Sealer: Price Point
Thirdly, and this proved to be the decisive factor, was an incredibly compelling offer from KTM. They were offering substantial discounts on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure models, making the SAR variant available at a price point comparable to the KTM 1090 Adv R, the BMW 850 GS, the Honda Africa Twin, and even the anticipated KTM 890 Adventure R. This undoubtedly stems from the upcoming major upgrade for the 1290 in the following year. Regardless, it was an opportunity too good to pass up.
BMW 1250 GS: Why Not?
Finally, the question arises: why not opt for the BMW 1250 GS in the large adventure bike category? Two primary reasons swayed my decision. Firstly, price. A BMW 1250 GS (the standard GS, not the Adventure model) with comparable features to the KTM would have been significantly more expensive. While BMW’s fit and finish are undeniably refined, the price difference simply wasn’t justifiable. Secondly, the local BMW dealership experience in Queretaro was less than satisfactory. While the BMW dealer in Mexico City (Satelite) provided excellent service, its three-hour distance posed a significant inconvenience for regular maintenance and servicing.
Confronting Reservations: The Weight Factor
One major concern loomed large when committing to the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R: its weight. At 240kg (528 lbs), it’s undeniably a heavy machine, slightly lighter than the 1250 GS, but considerably heavier than the Tenere 700 and 790 I initially considered. I worried about its off-road handling and, more practically, the ability to pick it up solo should the inevitable happen.
Well, those concerns were addressed swiftly and decisively. On the very day I brought the bike home, during a casual neighborhood ride, I decided to confront my fears head-on and ventured onto a familiar off-road section. Perhaps a bit premature, as within minutes of leaving the pavement… this occurred:

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the situation. Dropping this beast on day one? That’s a story in itself. Thankfully, it was a low-speed tumble, and I escaped unscathed. But the immediate challenge was picking it up. Alone and unaided, I put the side stand down, engaged first gear, and recalled the techniques I’d seen in videos. After a couple of attempts, leveraging the method demonstrated by Bret Tkacs in this helpful video, I managed to upright the Ktm Adventure Bike.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t upset about dropping it. In fact, I felt a sense of relief. It was bound to happen eventually, so why not get it out of the way early? The lesson was learned: I can pick up this bike, and aside from some minor “battle scars,” the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R was perfectly fine.
Four Weeks In: Still Smitten with the KTM Adventure Bike?
The answer is an emphatic YES. And I anticipate the skepticism: “Of course, he’d say yes after buying such an expensive motorcycle.” However, I speak from experience. Having owned numerous bikes, I’ve often experienced buyer’s remorse or at least a degree of disillusionment in the initial weeks. But the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is different.
That being said, if you’re contemplating this ktm adventure bike, there are aspects to consider:
“Smiles for Miles” – The Pure Joy of Riding
Every ride on the 1290 SAR is an absolute joy. The raw power of the engine is exhilarating. The exceptional suspension effortlessly absorbs the harsh realities of Mexican asphalt. Its rock-solid stability at high speeds is confidence-inspiring. Its commanding presence on the road parts traffic like the Red Sea. The alien-esque headlight in rearview mirrors commands respect. Pedestrians take notice. Even features I initially doubted, like keyless ignition, have become appreciated conveniences. The seamless acceleration via the quick shifter is addictive. In essence, I now understand the “Smiles for Miles” mantra so often associated with KTM ownership.
Height Considerations
At 5’10” (1.79m) with a 32″ inseam, I’m not the tallest rider. On the 1290 SAR, I’m on tiptoes on both sides. By shifting my weight slightly, I can flat-foot one side. It requires adaptation, but practical techniques make it manageable:
- Using foot pegs to mount the bike.
- Rolling the bike into position before mounting, then using the side stand for stability.
- Anticipating stops, especially on inclines, and shifting weight to flat-foot one side.
- “Hopping” between feet for adjustments.
- Exploring advanced techniques for shorter riders, such as those demonstrated in this MotoTrek video.
Managing the Weight
As previously discussed, the weight is a factor. But it’s manageable. Picking it up solo is possible for someone of my size. However, for some riders, the weight could be a deal-breaker.
Walking the bike requires practice. The key is balance. Prevent it from becoming top-heavy by making small, early corrections to keep it upright. This allows you to leverage your strength for forward and backward movement, making maneuvering surprisingly easy.
Wind Noise – A Known Issue
The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is notorious for wind noise, and I can confirm this. While not unbearable with earplugs, and no worse than some previous bikes, it’s not a comfortable aspect. As explored previously, wind noise in motorcycle helmets is multifaceted, often requiring trial and error to find the optimal setup. A taller windscreen is currently on order to test its effectiveness.
Engine Heat – A Warmth to Consider
Engine heat is another acknowledged characteristic of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure models. I was aware of this before purchasing and experienced it during test rides. While not a deal-breaker, and potentially mitigated by accessories, it’s something to note. Currently, in fall/winter, it’s not a major concern, but heat deflectors might be considered for warmer climates.
Choosing Between the S and R Models
A lingering question was whether I chose the correct model – the R or the more road-oriented S. The S boasts electronic suspension, alloy wheels, and a 19″ front wheel, offering quicker steering. The R, with spoked rims and a 21″ front, excels off-road. The optimal choice depends on riding priorities.
Final Verdict: R for the Win
Ultimately, I’m content with the R model. Its suspension is more adjustable, and a 19″ front wheel remains a future option if desired (though unlikely). Plus, the R simply exudes a more rugged and adventurous aesthetic.
Let the “Farkling” Begin!
For me, “farkling” – accessorizing and customizing – is almost as enjoyable as riding. Exploring the internet for accessories to enhance comfort and usability is a passion. Performance upgrades are less of a priority (this bike has ample power!), but luggage solutions, lights, mounts, windshields, and more are always on the radar. Stay tuned for future updates on my KTM adventure bike farkling journey!
