Onyx E Bike: A Game Day & Commuting Review

Experiencing the Onyx e-bike trike has been quite the ride, and overall, it’s a fantastic piece of personal transportation. Dealing with the company directly for shipping was a positive experience, even with a few minor hiccups that were quickly resolved. Now that everything is sorted, we’ve been thoroughly enjoying our new three-wheeled electric ride. For us, it’s become the ultimate game day vehicle, effortlessly transporting us to Texas A&M football games from our home, located about 1.5 miles from campus. The convenience is unmatched – free parking at bike racks, getting closer to the stadium than cars can, and navigating post-game traffic restrictions with ease.

When it comes to performance, the Onyx e-bike truly shines on straight paths. It’s fast and exhilarating! Braking is reasonable, though it does require some anticipation. Turning, however, is a different experience compared to a standard bicycle. You’re in an upright position and can’t lean into turns like you would on two wheels. This means slowing down significantly for corners is crucial. Another point to be mindful of is the width; it’s slightly wider than the handlebars. You need to be cautious to avoid catching a rear wheel on curbs. Unfortunately, we learned this the hard way. An unexpected curb encounter at over 20 mph resulted in my wife being ejected – a stark reminder of the physics involved when riding any vehicle at speed. Thankfully, she has recovered and, somewhat surprisingly, forgiven me, though a touch of PTSD might linger. Whether a seatbelt would have prevented this is debatable. In that moment, her ejection actually allowed me to regain control of the trike. With her weight (around 145 lbs) still on board, we might have risked flipping, potentially leading to a worse outcome. Ultimately, it was user error, and a valuable lesson learned about handling and awareness. Despite this incident, and it’s important to emphasize this was due to rider inexperience, I genuinely believe the Onyx e-bike is a safer transportation option than the two-wheeled scooter we previously used.

The build quality of the Onyx e-bike is undeniably robust – it feels heavy, but justifiably so, in my opinion. Despite the user error incident, the trike itself has proven to be completely reliable. Finally, addressing the price point, it is definitely a luxury purchase at its current level. However, my experience in life has generally been that you truly get what you pay for. If you’re considering an electric trike, especially for commuting or leisure, the Onyx e-bike is a worthwhile investment. Enjoy your ride, and ride safely!
