Orange Bike Brewing: Portland’s Exciting New Gluten-Free Brewery Arrives in East Bayside

Portland, Maine’s vibrant craft beer scene is about to welcome a unique addition with Orange Bike Brewing. This new brewery, specializing in gluten-free beers, is currently under construction at 31 Diamond Street in the East Bayside neighborhood. Beer enthusiasts and those seeking gluten-free options will soon have a new destination to explore when Orange Bike Brewing opens its doors.

Orange Bike Brewing is poised to be a standout in the American craft beer landscape. It will join a very select group of dedicated gluten-free breweries in the United States and become the second in Maine, complementing Lucky Pigeon Brewing in Biddeford. To ensure the quality and flavor of their gluten-free beers, Orange Bike Brewing has enlisted the expertise of renowned brewmaster Alan Pugsley as a consultant. Pugsley, a respected figure in the brewing industry, is developing a range of gluten-free recipes for the brewery. The beers will be produced using a 10-barrel vintage Peter Austin brewing system, adding a touch of classic brewing tradition to this innovative venture.

Beyond the brewing equipment, Orange Bike Brewing is creating a welcoming space for visitors. The brewery will feature a 60-person tasting room, perfect for sampling their gluten-free offerings. In addition, an outdoor courtyard is being built, capable of accommodating over 90 people, providing ample space to enjoy the brewery’s atmosphere.

The vision behind Orange Bike Brewing comes from founder Tom Ruff. His personal experience with gluten intolerance sparked the idea to create a brewery that caters to those seeking gluten-free beer without compromising on taste or quality. Neil Spilane, co-founder of Fork Food Lab, is also a key part of the team, serving as the COO and bringing his experience in the food and beverage industry to this new brewery.

Orange Bike Brewing is not just about brewing exceptional gluten-free beer; it’s also driven by a strong mission. The brewery is committed to operating with a “triple bottom line” approach, focusing on social, environmental, and financial sustainability. Their mission statement emphasizes a desire to be a “center and symbol of positive change” in Maine and beyond. This includes setting new standards for sustainable brewing practices, contributing positively to the local community, fostering inclusivity and hospitality, and creating meaningful job opportunities for Mainers.

Further strengthening their commitment to inclusivity, Ren Navarro of Beer. Diversity. has joined Orange Bike Brewing as a diversity consultant. Navarro’s expertise will guide the brewery in developing strong governance and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) practices as they build their team. She will be involved in hiring staff and managers, as well as recruiting for the Orange Bike board of directors, ensuring these processes reflect the brewery’s values.

Orange Bike Brewing has garnered support from various investors, including the Maine Venture Fund and the Indiana University Angel Network, alongside individual investors. They are also in the process of becoming a certified B Corporation, demonstrating their commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

Tom Ruff and the Orange Bike Brewing team are aiming to launch this exciting new gluten-free brewery in the fall. Portland’s beer scene and gluten-free community are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Orange Bike Brewing and its unique offerings.
