Rail bike tours operate regardless of weather conditions, rain or shine. Therefore, checking the forecast and dressing appropriately is crucial. Given the elevation in the Allegany Mountains, temperatures might be cooler, and weather patterns potentially more active. We were fortunate to have sunny weather on a hot summer day, prompting us to wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. I imagine experiencing this rail bike tour in the fall, amidst the changing foliage, would be exceptionally beautiful. Our group of sixteen was divided into smaller groups of four, each riding in quad bikes, positioned closely together along the tracks. My husband, who wore her, simply adjusted his pedaling stance slightly to accommodate the carrier, proving it quite manageable.

Our three and five-year-olds wore harnesses for added safety. I was initially worried about their ability to endure a two-hour ride. They did become a bit restless towards the end, but strategically timed snacks and gummies successfully kept them happy. They were unable to reach the pedals, so they simply enjoyed being passengers.
For families considering rail biking with young children, I’d advise against bringing particularly squirmy children who might try to get out of their seats. Personally, I would probably not bring a child younger than my youngest at three years old, specifically avoiding the age range where they are too large for a carrier but not yet able to sit still for two hours. Based on my experience, this might be roughly between 12-18 months to 3 years old, though this can vary for each child. If you’re concerned about your child’s ability to sit still, opting for a shorter tour or waiting until they are a bit older might be preferable. Knowing I would be taking photos and videos, I was grateful to have brought a lanyard holder to secure my phone, preventing accidental drops.
Some riders opted to place backpacks over the back of their seats. If you choose this method, ensure the straps can be securely fastened around the seat to prevent the bag from falling off. The Rail Bike Ride Experience: Scenic Views and Gentle Exercise
Initially, waiting in the sun before the ride, we felt the heat. However, once we started moving, a pleasant breeze and ample shade provided welcomed relief and kept us cool throughout the journey.
Riders can control the braking of the rail bikes, which was necessary at road crossings. Staff members were also present to guide us safely through several crossings. These crossings were primarily smaller, backcountry roads, not major highways.
The initial section of the ride from Frostburg felt slightly downhill, allowing for a relaxed, coasting start. The majority of the ride, however, required consistent pedaling.

It was enjoyable to parallel the Great Allegheny Passage and wave to passing cyclists. The mountain views were stunning, and riding across bridges and through a tunnel added to the adventure. The varied terrain and scenery made this a truly memorable “outdoor activity near me.”
The final mile or two leading into Downtown Cumberland required more effort in pedaling uphill. I was thankful to have at least two adults pedaling in our quad bike, assisting my younger children and ensuring we reached town comfortably.

After using the restrooms, we headed straight for lunch at The Crabby Pig, enjoying delicious food and outdoor patio seating. Maryland’s state food is indeed crab (blue crabs, specifically, I believe), and The Crabby Pig featured several tempting crab dishes on their menu, perfect for experiencing local cuisine.

Following lunch, we had about half an hour before our shuttle back to Frostburg arrived. Some of our group opted for ice cream, while others, including my family, headed to a nearby playground. Canal Place provides several options for post-rail-bike relaxation and enjoyment.
