Santa Ana Bike Trail Expansion: New Segment Connects San Bernardino and Redlands

The Santa Ana River Trail, a significant multi-use path in Southern California, reached a new milestone on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, with the groundbreaking of its latest segment. This phase, celebrated by Board of Supervisors Chair Dawn Rowe and Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., will extend the trail from San Bernardino into Redlands, bringing the ambitious project closer to completion.

“The groundbreaking today signifies our nearing completion of this remarkable 110-mile project,” stated Rowe at the ceremony held at the northern end of California Street in Redlands, the designated eastern terminus of the trail’s Phase III.

Weather permitting, this 3.8-mile segment is anticipated to be finished by April 2024. Upon completion, it will enable continuous trail access for pedestrians and cyclists along the river, starting north of California Street, traversing through San Bernardino and Colton, and stretching almost to the western edge of Riverside. The trail already resumes near the Orange County line and continues to the Pacific Ocean at Huntington Beach.

When fully realized, the Santa Ana River Trail is set to become the longest multi-use trail in Southern California. The San Bernardino County Regional Parks department is responsible for the development, operation, and upkeep of the 22 miles of the trail within the county’s jurisdiction.

“This project underscores San Bernardino County’s commitment, along with our partners, to prioritizing the quality of life in our communities,” Baca remarked.

Regional Parks Director Beahta Davis detailed the funding for Phase III, primarily sourced from a $6.9 million state Proposition 84 grant from the California Coastal Conservancy, and $1.1 million from the federal Active Transportation Program.

Rowe added, “This initiative aligns with the commitment made by our county leaders when they adopted the Countywide Vision campaign, aimed at fostering a healthy and active community.”
