Specialized Tarmac vs S-Works Tarmac: Unpacking the Performance Difference

Many cyclists considering a performance road bike will inevitably encounter the Specialized Tarmac. It’s a popular choice, renowned for its versatility and speed. But within the Tarmac range, the S-Works Tarmac sits at the top tier, promising an even greater level of performance. Having recently tested both the standard Tarmac and the S-Works Tarmac, the differences, while subtle on paper, translate to a significant change on the road.

Both the Tarmac and S-Works Tarmac share the same race-proven geometry. This means you get the same responsive handling and aggressive riding position in both models. However, the similarities largely end there. Specialized utilizes different grades of carbon fiber and employs distinct carbon layup techniques for the S-Works frame. This difference in construction is the key to understanding the performance gap.

The regular Tarmac is undoubtedly a fantastic bike. During my extensive test ride, which included a challenging 90-mile route with significant elevation gain and varied road surfaces, it proved to be a capable and enjoyable machine. For most riders, the standard Tarmac offers an excellent balance of performance and value.

However, stepping up to the S-Works Tarmac elevates the riding experience to a different echelon. It’s not just about a marginally stiffer frame, as was often the case with high-end bikes of the past. Advanced engineering has imbued the S-Works Tarmac with a remarkable responsiveness. When you unleash a sprint, the bike reacts with an immediate “snap,” translating your power into pure acceleration. The power transfer feels incredibly direct and efficient, making it a true racing weapon.

To put this into perspective, after my initial rides on the S-Works Tarmac, comparing data against my Specialized Roubaix (an excellent endurance bike), the performance metrics highlighted a noticeable difference. While objective power data wasn’t available for the regular Tarmac test ride, the subjective difference in feel and responsiveness was undeniable.

Ultimately, deciding between a Tarmac and an S-Works Tarmac boils down to your riding style and budget. If you are a competitive cyclist or someone who prioritizes ultimate performance and demands the most responsive ride possible, and the budget allows, the S-Works Tarmac is a worthwhile investment. However, rest assured that regardless of your choice, you’ll be riding a truly exceptional Specialized bike.
