Recently, a friend shared an intriguing photo of rail bikes operating on the historic Skunk Train tracks in Mendocino County. These novel contraptions, featuring four sturdy wheels designed for train tracks and comfortable seating for two, allow riders to pedal – or utilize electric assist – along the scenic railway. Intrigued by this unique concept and with a trip to Mendocino already planned, I eagerly seized the opportunity to experience firsthand. Here’s a comprehensive look at this memorable adventure.

Finding Your Way to the Rail Bike Departure
The journey begins at the Skunk Train depot, the same location where the traditional Skunk Train departs. Here, you’ll check in, collect your tickets, and receive directions to the rail bike meeting point. The actual launch area is just a short 5-minute drive from the depot, ensuring easy access.
Embarking on the Rail Bike Tour
Participants are advised to arrive 45 minutes prior to the scheduled tour time. This allows ample time for check-in procedures and a thorough introduction to the rail bikes before your adventure begins.
These rail bikes are designed for ease of use, featuring an electric assist motor. While you have the option to pedal, the electric assistance significantly amplifies each pedal stroke, making the ride remarkably effortless and suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
After a comprehensive briefing on operation and meeting our guide, Amie, who would lead our group, we paused to allow the Skunk Train to pass before we were cleared to set off onto the tracks.
The rail bikes move at a brisk pace with minimal pedaling required, thanks to the efficient electric assist. This feature lets you relax and fully immerse yourself in the surrounding scenery.
Having experienced the Skunk Train ride the previous day, exploring the same route by rail bike offered a fresh perspective. The slower pace allowed for a deeper appreciation of the natural beauty, enhancing my connection with the landscape.
Approximately 15 minutes into our ride, we entered the redwood forest. The towering redwoods dramatically elevated the scenic beauty of the journey, creating an enchanting and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
Our ride culminated at the track’s end, where we dismounted to explore the area briefly. Before heading back, we turned the rail bikes around, ready for the return journey.
The guides were exceptional, maintaining a relaxed pace that encouraged us to savor the experience and absorb the tranquility of our surroundings. Being confined to the tracks meant we could freely look around and enjoy the views without the need to steer, focusing instead on the peaceful ride and the person ahead.
If you’re visiting the Fort Bragg or Mendocino region, I highly recommend experiencing the skunk train & rail bikes. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, and I consider it a must-do activity, especially as it’s the only rail bike experience I know of in California. If you know of others, please let me know!
