Getting Around Grand Rapids: Exploring Bike and Scooter Options

Grand Rapids is making it easier for everyone to navigate the city with Bike And Scooter sharing programs, especially focusing on residents in Neighborhoods of Focus. These neighborhoods, identified in a 2016 study funded by the Kellogg Foundation, include 17 Census Tracts with historically higher poverty and unemployment rates, and lower educational attainment.

To improve mobility within these areas, the city has partnered with Lime, a micromobility company, to offer discounted access to both e-scooters and e-assist bicycles. A significant portion, around 74%, of the Neighborhoods of Focus are covered by this program. Residents starting their rides within these zones automatically receive a 30% discount on their fares. This discount is applied on top of other potential benefits, unless users are already enrolled in the Lime Access program or a university student discount.

Affordable User Fees for Bikes and Scooters

Lime’s standard pricing for both e-scooters and e-assist bikes starts with a $1 unlock fee, followed by a per-minute charge of 36 cents. Recognizing the need for affordable transportation, the City of Grand Rapids has collaborated with Lime to offer further reduced-cost options and even free rides for eligible individuals.

The Lime Access program is designed to provide a substantial discount for qualifying users. Those who are approved for Lime Access receive a 50% reduction on the standard fare. More detailed information about the Lime Access program and application process can be found at the Lime website.

Student Discounts on Bikes and Scooters

In addition to neighborhood-specific and low-income discounts, students in Grand Rapids can also benefit from reduced fares. Students enrolled at several local colleges and universities are eligible for an automatic 30% discount on all Lime trips. To access this discount, students simply need to sign up for Lime using their official school email address. Participating institutions include:

  • Aquinas College
  • Calvin University
  • Central Michigan University
  • Cornerstone University
  • Davenport University
  • Ferris State University
  • Grand Rapids Community College
  • Grand Valley State University
  • Kuyper College
  • Michigan State University
  • Western Michigan University

Accessibility and Language Options

While fully accessible micromobility devices are not currently available in Grand Rapids, Mobile GR is actively working with Lime to enhance device functionality for a broader range of users. Future improvements are planned, including the introduction of sit-down scooters in 2025 and the recent addition of hand throttles to all Lime e-bikes.

For user convenience, the Lime platform provides language options in both English and Spanish.

Grand Rapids is committed to providing accessible and affordable bike and scooter options, ensuring residents and students have convenient and sustainable transportation choices.
