Concept 2 Bike Erg: A Month-Long User Experience and Review

After dedicating the past month and approximately 20 hours to training on the Concept 2 Bike Erg, I’m ready to share my experiences. My decision to purchase the Concept 2 erg stemmed from a desire for on-the-fly adjustability in stem height and length, and a reluctance to dedicate my road bike to indoor training. The ability to swiftly alter the stem position to mimic climbing or time trial setups, even mid-Zwift session, has been invaluable. At 53, neck flexibility isn’t what it once was, and this adjustability is a game-changer for comfort. For context, I bring years of road and mountain biking experience, including NORBA, USCF, and multisport events, to this review.

I customized my setup by installing my preferred saddle and clip-in pedals, while initially keeping the stock handlebars. Connectivity is seamless via Bluetooth to Apple TV, with heart rate monitoring handled directly on the bike erg display.

While I haven’t personally tested a Smart Trainer, which offers automatic resistance adjustments, the Concept 2 Bike Erg’s damper system presents a compelling alternative. Similar to shifting gears on a traditional bike, adjusting the damper lever on the erg allows for immediate increases or decreases in resistance, effectively providing “gear changes” as needed.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Concept 2 Bike Erg, and a significant factor in my purchase, is the promise of zero maintenance. Frankly, I’ve grown weary of the constant upkeep and expenses associated with traditional bikes. So far, the Concept 2 bike erg has lived up to this promise, contributing to my overall positive experience and satisfaction with this indoor cycling machine. In summary, based on my initial month of use, I’m thoroughly pleased with the Concept 2 Bike Erg and its performance.
