Philly’s Naked Bike Ride: More Than Just Skin Deep

Thousands of cyclists in Philadelphia embraced a sunny Saturday afternoon for the 15th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride, an event championing body positivity and advocating for safer streets for cyclists. Starting at Glendinning Rock Garden at 5 p.m., participants, adorned with body paint and glitter, pedaled through Center City, drawing attention and spreading messages of body acceptance before concluding at Drexel Park.

The Philadelphia ride, an annual fixture since 2009, except for a COVID-related pause, stands as one of the largest Nude Bike Rides in the United States. With Portland’s event, typically the largest, canceled this year, Philadelphia was anticipated to host an even bigger gathering, attracting participants from across the country.

Mirroring other events linked to the World Naked Bike Ride, a global movement encompassing over 120 similar gatherings, the Philly ride promotes cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation and campaigns for reduced dependence on fossil fuels. This ethos is encapsulated in the PNBR’s catchy slogan: “Less gas, more ass.”

This year’s ride took place against a backdrop of heightened calls for bike safety improvements in Philadelphia. Advocates have been urging the city to implement stronger safety measures following the tragic death of Barbara Friedes, a local resident struck by a driver while cycling. The driver involved has been charged, including for driving under the influence at the time of the incident.

While the serious message of cyclist safety was prominent, the Philly Naked Bike Ride maintained its celebratory and joyful atmosphere.
