Your Go-To Bike Station Services

For cyclists relying on the TLC and Folsom bike stations, it’s important to know what services are available to keep your ride smooth. Both stations are well-equipped to handle common issues like flat tires. Whether you need a simple patch for a puncture or a complete Station Bike tube replacement, the mechanics have you covered – and the new tube is even free if a patch isn’t enough! Beyond flats, the stations can also tackle cable and housing replacements when necessary and as time permits.

During peak times, especially at the start of semesters when many cyclists are seeking assistance, the focus is on quick, essential maintenance. To ensure everyone gets help, please aim to keep each station bike service session to around 15 minutes. This allows the mechanics to assist as many people as possible efficiently.

It’s crucial to understand the limitations of the bike station. While they provide tubes, cables, and housing, they do not supply other bike parts. However, if you bring your own parts, the mechanics are happy to assist with replacements, time allowing. They can also help you diagnose issues and determine which parts might need replacing on your station bike. Please note that the services do not extend to complex tasks such as bearing overhauls, suspension work, or wheel building. For these more intricate repairs, a dedicated bike shop is recommended.

Thinking about upgrading brake pads, tires, or replacing cables and housing? These are examples of tasks the station bike mechanics can assist you with. If you’re considering bringing a specific part for replacement at the bike station, it’s always a good idea to email the team at [email protected] beforehand to check with the staff. For many repairs and part replacements, local bike shops are better equipped, offering a wider range of tools and more experienced professional staff for your station bike needs.

Important Note for E-Bike Owners: The repair stands at the bike stations are not designed to safely handle electric bikes due to their weight and the specific requirements of e-bike maintenance. Additionally, the staff are not specifically trained for the diverse motor connections and dropouts found on e-bikes. E-bikes are often too heavy for the stands and for staff to lift safely. Local bike shops, equipped with hydraulic lift stands and specialized e-bike expertise, are better suited for e-bike repairs. While some minor adjustments may be possible at the station bike facility, be prepared to remove your e-bike battery if requested. For repairs involving the rear wheel, particularly if your e-bike has a rear hub motor, you will be directed to a local bike shop. However, if you can bring in a rear e-bike wheel already removed due to a flat tire, the station bike mechanics can assist with the tire repair.

Finally, and importantly: You must remain at the bike station while your station bike is being repaired. The bike station assumes no responsibility for bikes left unattended and potentially stolen. Please stay with your bike throughout the service.
