Tailored Riding Experiences for Every Skill Level
At Tam Bikes Camp, our primary goal is to ensure every camper has a safe, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate mountain biking experience. To achieve this, we carefully assess each camper’s riding ability before the session begins. This assessment helps us create balanced groups where children with similar skills can ride together and encourage each other. If your child is registering with friends who have varying riding abilities and they wish to be grouped together, please register all children at the ability level of the least experienced rider. Rest assured, group assignments are flexible, and we are committed to ensuring every rider is placed in the group that best suits their needs and allows them to thrive.
To help you determine the most suitable group for your child, here’s a guide to our rider ability levels. If you’re unsure about your child’s level or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Important Note: While novice riders don’t need prior mountain biking experience, they must be comfortable riding a bike already. Participants should be able to confidently start, stop, turn, and ride in a controlled manner for at least 3 miles. If your child is new to biking or still working on the basics, they may not yet be ready for our camp rides. We offer private and small group instruction for all ages to help riders build confidence and control on their bikes – please inquire about these options if needed. Contact us with any questions before registering, especially if you are unsure about your child’s riding ability.
Novice Riders
Novice riders at Tam Bikes Camp are comfortable controlling their bikes and can start, stop, turn, climb, and descend gentle hills for 3-6 miles without needing frequent stops. Examples of novice-level rides include comfortably riding the Shoreline Trail at China Camp at a relaxed pace without constant stops, or riding from Downtown Mill Valley to Sausalito on paved streets and paths with minimal rest stops. If you are unsure if your camper fits this level, please contact us for guidance.
Intermediate Riders
Intermediate riders are confident in controlling their bikes while slowly climbing and descending moderate hills for distances of 5-10 miles on dirt trails, with only occasional rest stops. Examples of intermediate rides include slowly climbing the Old Railroad Grade from Mill Valley to the West Point Inn with few stops, or steadily riding the Shoreline Trail at China Camp with a few planned rest stops.
Advanced-Intermediate Riders
Advanced-intermediate riders can confidently control their bikes while steadily climbing and descending moderate and even some technical terrain for 10-15 miles on dirt trails without frequent breaks. Examples of rides at this level include steadily climbing the Old Railroad Grade from Mill Valley to East Peak, or consistently riding loops like the Bay View Trail in China Camp or the Camp Tamarancho loop, with only a few rest stops.
Advanced Riders
Advanced riders at Tam Bikes Camp are highly skilled and can confidently control their bikes while steadily climbing large hills and descending technical terrain for 15-20 miles on dirt trails with minimal rest stops. Examples of advanced rides include climbing the Old Railroad Grade to West Point Inn, descending Coastal View Trail to Muir Beach, and then climbing up Middle Green Gulch Trail or Diaz Ridge before returning to Mill Valley. They can also briskly ride loops like the Bay View Trail in China Camp and the Camp Tamarancho loop.
Prepare Your Camper for Success
Consistent time on the bike is invaluable. If your camper is feeling nervous about attending camp or doesn’t ride regularly, we strongly encourage you to help them get comfortable with some easy, mellow rides before their session begins. Remember, Tam Bikes Camp also offers private and small group instruction for riders of all ages who want to improve their comfort and control on their bikes. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns and help your child get ready for an unforgettable Tam Bikes Camp experience!
