For those in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) riding community and beyond, Kyle Warner’s story is one that resonates deeply. Featured on Vital MTB’s Speaking of Mountain Biking podcast, Kyle, a prominent PNW rider, shares an inspiring narrative about how mountain bikes became a vital part of his life, especially during challenging times in his youth. His insights into the mountain bike industry and his experiences as a professional rider offer a compelling listen for anyone passionate about the sport.
Kyle’s journey to becoming a pro mountain biker is distinct from many of his contemporaries. During his teenage years, facing considerable hardship, he was living in an abandoned house. To support his mother, he opted for independent study, allowing him to work while managing his education. It was through dedication and hard work that he saved enough money, coupled with assistance from his local bike shop, to acquire his first BMX bike. This marked the beginning of finding solace and release at the neighborhood dirt jumps.
His talent soon caught the eye of older riders from Chico State. Recognizing his potential, they encouraged him to try mountain biking. “They kind of took me under their wing,” Kyle recounts, “and I started riding with them, just crashing into every tree on the trail but having a good time, and every time there was a jump I’d just boost it”. While the transition from dirt jumps to mountain bike trails felt natural, he does recall some apprehension before his first proper mountain bike ride. “It was raining, kind of muddy, I was so nervous. My buddy let me borrow his old 2002 Norco Rampage… I was just s***ing myself trying to figure out what am I going to do here you know?” However, this initial nervousness quickly transformed into the realization that he had found his calling.
Reflecting on that first ride, Kyle shares a sentiment many can relate to: “It was literally that [first] day, that I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life… being focused so hard on the trail and the task at hand, you don’t have time to think about your problems going on at home.” He emphasizes the vital role mountain biking played in his life, offering an escape and a focus during stressful periods. “I think that’s what drew me to biking the most, is you could focus on something and everything else, all the stress just kind of melts away from home life.” Even while dealing with his mother’s illness and recovery, mountain biking provided a crucial anchor and positive direction.
